Each weekend in our community, there are tons of events that you can join. This Saturday there are two special events to participate in – the Northern Vintage & Arts Market and Wolf Park After Dark. The Northern Vintage & Arts Market runs from 8AM to 3PM at Carnahan Hall. It has things to do and see both inside and outdoors. Enjoy the Hot Summer Nights Car Show & Sidewalk Sales brought yo you by the Lafayette Kroozers! If you’re an artist, vintage collector, antiquer… you’ll love this!

Late that Saturday evening is Wolf Park After Dark. Once a month, Wolf Park opens its doors to the public after Howl Night. Visitors have the chance to see the park after the sun sinks low. Visitors can walk the tour trail, listen to the wolves howl, and see the animals at a time of day they are frequently active. Watch out for fireflies and shooting stars! Listen to the frogs and insects sing and maybe spot a bat or other nightlife. Wolf Park After Dark runs from 7:30PM to 11PM. You can stop by the campfire, roast marshmallows and chat with the highly knowledgeable staff about these remarkable animals.

Weekend Update: Fiddlers Gathering & Theater in the Garden

This weekend is very special! Why? It is the 46th Annual Indiana Fiddler’s Gathering!

Join the crowds at Tippecanoe Battlefield Park from June 22nd to 24th. Evening concerts begin at 8PM, and afternoon concerts at 2PM. Enjoy this unique three-day music festival offering FREE workshops, children’s concert and gospel concert. This year features bands such as Aaron Weinstein, The Volo Bogtrotters, Rochie Toochie and the Ragtime Shepherd Kings, The New Hoosier Broadcasters, The Basement Bluegrass Band, and Bing Futch. You won’t want to miss this mix of bluegrass and other musical styles! Camping sites are available for purchase, both for tents and RVs. More information available at their website.

This weekend you can also enjoy Theater in the Garden! This event is brought to you by The Haan Museum of Indiana Art and Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette. Theater in the Garden offers the Civic Youth Summer Theatre Institute’s production of “Make it Happen”. Come down to the Theater Garden behind the Haan Museum on June 22 & 23 for this wonderful display of the arts in our community. This will be the premier of both the new stage and the play, which was specifically written by Laurie Russell for this event. Tickets for “Make it Happen” are $7 per person and can be reserved at LafayetteCivic.org or by calling 765-423-PLAY (7529). The rain date is Sunday, June 24 at 2pm. On Saturday, June 16th, enjoy the day with your family at the Springtime Kids Royal Sip and Paint! STAMP Nation presents this unique event perfect for kids of all ages. Have a blast at the Bauer Family Resources Community Center from 10AM to 3PM. Come out and join STAMP Nation for a day filled with fun and excitement while painting a magical masterpiece!  The “Springtime Kids Royal Sip and Paint” will consist of 45 minute time slots to ensure all children have the opportunity to enjoy this wonderful activity. Parents admission is free with the purchase of a child ticket. Get ready to enjoy an environment immersed in culture and artistic bliss while gaining the opportunity to shop with some of Lafayette area businesses. Weekend Update: Ice Cream Crawl & Soap Box Derby

Saturday, June 9th, you’ll want tickets to the Lafayette Rotary Club’s Ice Cream Crawl. There are a plethora stops on the crawl, participating from 1-4PM. The stops are: Silver Dipper (2); Culvers; Budges Drive In; Original Frozen Custard; Igloo (2); Cold Stone Creamery (2); and Sweet Revolution Bake Shop. Passport holders may visit the vendors to taste ice cream/custard and receive a stamp on their Passport at each location visited. Everyone visiting 5 or more vendors will be entered in a drawing for an Ice Cream Lover’s Grand Prize gift basket. You won’t want to miss getting your passport stamped at each delicious location. From 8:30AM to 3PM, June 9th, you can participate in or watch the Soap Box Derby. This event is open to participants from ages 7 to 20. You must be 7 by the local race date and cannot be 18 by August 1st of the current race year.  Master Division driver age limit is 10 by the local race date and cannot be 20 by August 1st of the current year.

Soap Box Derby has a long history of building more than racers.   It has a history of building character, friendships and the desire to achieve.  The Derby organizers believe that kids involved with the program, both boys and girls, should be taught the value of hard work and good sportsmanship.  This is a priority, because when this happens – everybody is a winner.  With parental guidance and participation, Soap Box Derby is an educational as well as a super fun experience for all involved.

Lafayette Soap Box Derby races four divisions:  Stock, Super Stock, Masters and Challenger.  The Stock, Super Stock and Masters winners earn the right to compete at the All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio in July. If you’re interested in this event, please visit their Facebook page.

Do you look forward to Wolf Park After Dark every year? Well, the first one of this year is coming up THIS weekend! Saturday, May 26th, you should come for this unique opportunity. Once a month, Wolf Park is open late after Howl Night so visitors can see the park after the sun sinks low. Visitors can walk the tour trail, listen to the wolves howl, and see the animals at a time of day they are frequently active. Watch out for fireflies and shooting stars! Listen to the frogs and insects sing and maybe spot a bat or other nightlife. Then, stop by the campfire, roast a marshmallow and chat with the staff. Earlier that day, from 9 AM to 4:30 PM, is the Round the Fountain Art Fair. This is an annual event that celebrates local artistry as well as artists from around the country!

It is one of the best one-day outdoor art shows in the Midwest. Featuring paintings, sculptures, pottery, photography prints, jewelry and other media. The City of Lafayette and the ‘Round the Fountain Art Fair Committee welcome you to the ‘Round the Fountain Art Fair, an annual destination location that features up to 100 artists from around the nation, showcasing their talent and works in a variety of pieces and media. The ‘Round the Fountain Art Fair committee awards participating artists purchase awards, awards of excellence and merit awards. Each year, a piece of art is purchased by the committee to continue the permanent collection exhibited in the halls of the Tippecanoe County Courthouse, which is a work of art in itself. Weekend Update: Make Goat Soap at The Farm & More!

This weekend and every weekend in our area, there’s a chance to do something very unique! If you’re feeling creative and crafty, there are two great events coming up that you can take part in! First, join expert Felicia Payne Nicholson in “Making Goat Soap” – a workshop put on at The Farm at Prophetstown on Saturday, May 19. Felicia comes from Patchwork Acres Farm and will be demonstrating the art of goat soap making. Felicia runs a very successful farm business where she makes products using milk from goats raised right on her farm. She will demonstrate milking and the process of making goat soap. Also happening this Saturday is the Spring Boutique and Craft Fair! Hosted at the Tippecanoe County Mall, there will be a exciting array of options to explore. There will be over TWENTY vendors – ranging from handmade crafts, to Pampered Chef, to It Works, to Lu La Roe. Bring your friends for a fun day of shopping, giveaways, awesome samples, and  you can support local small businesses at the same time! Weekend Update: Art, Bark n Brew & Mosey Down Main

This weekend and every weekend, there is a chance to build and celebrate our community! On Saturday, May 12, join the community at the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette for Art, Bark ‘n Brew! The first annual event of its kind will take place from 11am-2pm. This dog- and family-friendly event at the museum will feature two food trucks & People’s Brewing Company along with free art activities for people and their pets. Matt Monta and the Haymakers will provide live music and there will be a photo op station with some of the life size dogs from our previous Dog Days of Summer program. Attendees will also have the opportunity to post photos on social media and win a customized pet portrait! Dogs MUST follow dog etiquette checklist:

– Dog must be leashed at all times.
– No retractable leashes. A standard 4-6 foot leash is acceptable.
– Owners must have a paper copy of current rabies vaccination.
– Female dogs experiencing a heat cycle will not be allowed.
– Owners must be attentive to and pick-up after their pup.
– Well-socialized, friendly dogs only. Dogs exhibiting aggressive behaviors should be asked politely to leave.

Mark your calendars for what is sure to be a fun event! Admission is free, but some activities will require payment. If there is rain, the date will be moved to June 23rd. Please check the website in case of inclement weather and for more information!

 

Later that evening, celebrate the amazing diversity and excitement that our community has to offer. Mosey Down Main Street is a series of street celebrations brought to you by the local artistic community.  Volunteers, downtown business owners, artists and musicians come together once a month from May through September to offer a free family friendly event that takes place right down the center of Main Street. With three stages of music, outdoor food, beer, and wine sales as well as street performers, sidewalk chalk and hand made Hula hoops, Drum circles and DJ’s, belly dancers, and balloon animals. This is a great way to get a taste of what downtown and beyond has to offer!

Weekend Update: Delphi Opera House Fun!

This weekend at the Delphi Opera House are two great events to keep you busy! First, on Saturday, May 5th, join in on “A Conversation with Mark Twain”. From 2PM to 4PM, watch performer Tracy Rosa relive the days of America in its earliest times. See  Samuel Monghorn Clemens, known to the public as Mark Twain, recount stories of Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn – as well as The Frog from Calaveras County interjected with its unique opinions on such topics as Congress, Prohibition, growing old, and Adam and Eve. The following day, Sunday, May 6th, witness the storytelling of David Malack. He is a Bloomington storyteller whose tale “Oracle of Delphi : A Grand History of the Delphi Opera House” floats back and forth through more than 150 years to capture moments in time. See this recently restored venue through the eyes of several historical characters. Presented first at the Indiana Landmarks Center in March, the story is part of the series “If These Walls Could Tell”,  commissioned by Frank and Katrina Basile to honor the winner of Indiana Landmarks’ Cook Cup. The Cook Cup is awarded annually to an outstanding restoration project. The Delphi Preservation Society was awarded the Cook Cup in 2017 for its decades-long project to restore the Delphi Opera House. Members of the Delphi Preservation Society and/or the Delphi Opera House are eligible. From 2PM to 4PM, listen to the captivating story that won David this award. Weekend Update: Wabash Center Gala & Boiler Con

On Friday, April 6th is the Wabash Center’s 65th Anniversary Gala. Celebrate decades of serving the community! From 6-10pm, you can join in the Gala that highlights 65 years of service to children and adults with disabilities in Greater Lafayette. Each year on Purdue’s campus is Boiler Con! Boiler Con 2018 is our own comic con – come and meet amazing comic book artists and writers, take part in card and board game tournaments, see the unique vendors, sign up for the cosplay contest, and enjoy panels of special guests on April 7! Stop into the Purdue Memorial Union on April 7th from 3-8pm to experience all there is to offer! (And, it is FREE to the public!) Special guests include: Bernard Chang, former Imagineer and Comic Book Creator Mackey McCandlish: Creator of Call of Duty games. If you plan on attending, please be aware of the following rules:

  •  No profanity allowed. That includes messages on signs or clothes.
  • Costumes cannot promote alcohol, illegal drugs, tobacco, or firearms/weapons.
  • NO WEAPONS. All firearms/weapons, real or props, are prohibited from the event.

  • NO NUDITY. All costumes should provide enough coverage to be worn in public and should be in good taste and appropriate for a family-friendly environment.
  • If costumes are deemed too revealing, you will be asked to cover up.
  • Gore and graphic violence must be minimal.

Weekend Update: Easter Comes Early & Live Music

Getting excited for the Easter? Even though it’s not until April 1st, the Easter Bunny is coming to town starting this weekend. Hop on down to the Tippecanoe Mall and welcome the Easter Bunny Visit Lafayette-West Lafayette Facebook 2131-fb-118702231488640_1738469802845200for the holiday season! He will be available 11am-8pm Monday through Thursday, 10am-9pm Friday-Saturday, and Noon-6pm on Sundays. The Easter Bunny takes a carrot break from 3-3:30 daily. If you’re looking for some live music this weekend, there is plenty to be found in Lafayette-West Lafayette! Dan Whitaker & The Shinebenders from Chicago will be playing a show at American Legion Post 492 on this Saturday. The show starts at 7PM and is FREE to the public. You also don’t want to miss out on the lasagna being served from 4-6PM. Song writer, guitarist, and singer Dan Whitaker created the Shinebenders to convey his songs in the beloved format formerly known as country. The group has been around since 2004, where they got started in Chicago and now have the chance to travel all throughout the midwest! The Shinebenders include fellow Chicago music veterans Tom Mioducki on 27336196_1621175467947831_6395004929427890563_nacoustic guitar and vocals, Earl “T-Bone” Powers on upright bass and Eric “Chase” Niffenegger on drums. Their latest album, Anything You Wanted To, was recorded by Mike Hagler at Kingsize Soundlabs in Chicago and released Fall 2017. The album brings together western swing, rock and roll, country-jazz and hillbilly songs to create DWSB’s one-of-a-kind sound.
