This Friday, November 16, kicks off this year’s annual swing dance event at Purdue – Whistle Stop! Presented by Purdue Night Train Swing and Blue Dance Club, Whistle Stop runs Friday and Saturday from 8PM to 12AM. Sounds like a weekend full of fun! From a live band to swing dance instructors, this evening will be one for the books! If you’re ready to get in the Christmas spirit, you’re in luck this weekend. Running Friday through Sunday at the Delphi Opera House is A Christmas Story. A Christmas Story, by humorist Jean Shepherd, is an endlessly delightful holiday classic about growing up in the Midwest in the 1940s. The story follows nine-year-old Ralphie in his quest to get an official Red Ryder BB gun under the tree for Christmas. Will he get what his heart desires? Weekend Update: Nine Irish Brothers 10 Year Celebration & Purdue Theatre Performance

Nine Irish Brothers in Lafayette opened its doors ten years ago, and they are going to celebrate this Friday, November 9! They will have giveaways, drinks specials ($1 off Guinness, Nine Irish Red, and Irish Butts), as well as some GREAT music from Ireland’s favorite son Brendan Loughrey! Brendan is a talented, energetic Irish musician with a huge repertoire of songs, including originals such as  Kenny Chesney,” and “Livin’ in the Heart of Ireland,” as well as outstanding renditions of traditional Irish tunes. He’s a great guy, as fun as he is talented, perfect for a celebration!

The Purdue Theatre Department showcases the musical, Next to Normal on Friday, November 9 and Saturday, November 10. The winner of the Pulitzer Prize for drama and three Tony awards, Next to Normal presents an unflinching look at a suburban family struggling with the effects of mental illness, set to a rock music score. Dad’s an architect; Mom rushes to pack lunches and pour cereal; their daughter and son are bright, wise-cracking teens, appearing to be a typical American family. And yet their lives are anything but normal because the mother has been battling manic depression for 16 years. Next to Normal takes audiences into the minds and hearts of each character, presenting their family’s story with love, sympathy and heart.

Weekend Event: The Big Swing Band & Heirloom Orchards

This weekend, commemorate the vibrant vibes of the 1940’s. Carnahan Hall Presents: The Big Swing Band on November 2nd. The event begins at 7:30pm, doors opening at 6:30pm! Do not miss out on this evening of excitement. This is a night of 1940’s swing music and dancing, along with some ballroom dances too! The Big Swing Band is gaining popularity in Indiana with its sound of classic swing music which captivated the nation from the 1930’s through the 1960’s. The players are professionals and highly skilled performers from various backgrounds. They play mostly standards from yesteryear recorded by such legends as Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin and Nat King Cole, with some more modern favorites by such artists as Billy Joel, Brian Setzer and the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies. The band also sports its own arsenal of original arrangements as well as a few original tunes.

 

Have you ever wondered what goes into starting an orchard, or thought about starting your own? Come join the experts at The Farm at Prophetstown State Park this Sunday, November 4th. Enjoy a talk about starting your heirloom orchard. Learn about heritage apple varieties and check out the plans for an heirloom orchard at The Farm. Admission to the Farm and this event is free with park admission. It runs from 1pm to 2pm. If you love nature or are interested in learning more about heirloom orchards, this is the place for you this weekend!

Weekend Update: Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette & Ballroom Dance

If you love theater and mystery, this weekend the Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette presents a show just for you! This Friday, October 26 is the opening night of Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery. This exciting show runs on weekends from the 26th until November 10th. Fridays and Saturdays, the show begins at 7:30pm and on Sundays the show begins at 2:30pm. Get your deerstalker cap on – the play’s afoot! Comedic genius Ken Ludwig transforms Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic The Hound of the Baskervilles into a murderously funny adventure. Watch as Holmes and Watson try to escape a dizzying web of clues, silly accents, disguises, and deceit as five actors deftly portray more than forty characters. Are you a lover of dance, or just want to check out something new? Stop by the annual ballroom dance competition at Purdue hosted by Purdue Latin & Ballroom Dance Team. This Saturday, October 27th from 7am to 9pm, you can enjoy a great number of dances at this event. There will be hundreds of dancers from Purdue and other schools! Weekend Update: Northern Vintage & Arts Market and Wolf Park After Dark

Each weekend in our community, there are tons of events that you can join. This Saturday there are two special events to participate in – the Northern Vintage & Arts Market and Wolf Park After Dark. The Northern Vintage & Arts Market runs from 8AM to 3PM at Carnahan Hall. It has things to do and see both inside and outdoors. Enjoy the Hot Summer Nights Car Show & Sidewalk Sales brought yo you by the Lafayette Kroozers! If you’re an artist, vintage collector, antiquer… you’ll love this!

Late that Saturday evening is Wolf Park After Dark. Once a month, Wolf Park opens its doors to the public after Howl Night. Visitors have the chance to see the park after the sun sinks low. Visitors can walk the tour trail, listen to the wolves howl, and see the animals at a time of day they are frequently active. Watch out for fireflies and shooting stars! Listen to the frogs and insects sing and maybe spot a bat or other nightlife. Wolf Park After Dark runs from 7:30PM to 11PM. You can stop by the campfire, roast marshmallows and chat with the highly knowledgeable staff about these remarkable animals.

Weekend Update: Fiddlers Gathering & Theater in the Garden

This weekend is very special! Why? It is the 46th Annual Indiana Fiddler’s Gathering!

Join the crowds at Tippecanoe Battlefield Park from June 22nd to 24th. Evening concerts begin at 8PM, and afternoon concerts at 2PM. Enjoy this unique three-day music festival offering FREE workshops, children’s concert and gospel concert. This year features bands such as Aaron Weinstein, The Volo Bogtrotters, Rochie Toochie and the Ragtime Shepherd Kings, The New Hoosier Broadcasters, The Basement Bluegrass Band, and Bing Futch. You won’t want to miss this mix of bluegrass and other musical styles! Camping sites are available for purchase, both for tents and RVs. More information available at their website.

This weekend you can also enjoy Theater in the Garden! This event is brought to you by The Haan Museum of Indiana Art and Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette. Theater in the Garden offers the Civic Youth Summer Theatre Institute’s production of “Make it Happen”. Come down to the Theater Garden behind the Haan Museum on June 22 & 23 for this wonderful display of the arts in our community. This will be the premier of both the new stage and the play, which was specifically written by Laurie Russell for this event. Tickets for “Make it Happen” are $7 per person and can be reserved at LafayetteCivic.org or by calling 765-423-PLAY (7529). The rain date is Sunday, June 24 at 2pm. Weekend Update: Ice Cream Crawl & Soap Box Derby

Saturday, June 9th, you’ll want tickets to the Lafayette Rotary Club’s Ice Cream Crawl. There are a plethora stops on the crawl, participating from 1-4PM. The stops are: Silver Dipper (2); Culvers; Budges Drive In; Original Frozen Custard; Igloo (2); Cold Stone Creamery (2); and Sweet Revolution Bake Shop. Passport holders may visit the vendors to taste ice cream/custard and receive a stamp on their Passport at each location visited. Everyone visiting 5 or more vendors will be entered in a drawing for an Ice Cream Lover’s Grand Prize gift basket. You won’t want to miss getting your passport stamped at each delicious location. From 8:30AM to 3PM, June 9th, you can participate in or watch the Soap Box Derby. This event is open to participants from ages 7 to 20. You must be 7 by the local race date and cannot be 18 by August 1st of the current race year.  Master Division driver age limit is 10 by the local race date and cannot be 20 by August 1st of the current year.

Soap Box Derby has a long history of building more than racers.   It has a history of building character, friendships and the desire to achieve.  The Derby organizers believe that kids involved with the program, both boys and girls, should be taught the value of hard work and good sportsmanship.  This is a priority, because when this happens – everybody is a winner.  With parental guidance and participation, Soap Box Derby is an educational as well as a super fun experience for all involved.

Lafayette Soap Box Derby races four divisions:  Stock, Super Stock, Masters and Challenger.  The Stock, Super Stock and Masters winners earn the right to compete at the All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio in July. If you’re interested in this event, please visit their Facebook page.

Do you look forward to Wolf Park After Dark every year? Well, the first one of this year is coming up THIS weekend! Saturday, May 26th, you should come for this unique opportunity. Once a month, Wolf Park is open late after Howl Night so visitors can see the park after the sun sinks low. Earlier that day, from 9 AM to 4:30 PM, is the Round the Fountain Art Fair. This is an annual event that celebrates local artistry as well as artists from around the country!

It is one of the best one-day outdoor art shows in the Midwest. Featuring paintings, sculptures, pottery, photography prints, jewelry and other media. The City of Lafayette and the ‘Round the Fountain Art Fair Committee welcome you to the ‘Round the Fountain Art Fair, an annual destination location that features up to 100 artists from around the nation, showcasing their talent and works in a variety of pieces and media. The ‘Round the Fountain Art Fair committee awards participating artists purchase awards, awards of excellence and merit awards. Each year, a piece of art is purchased by the committee to continue the permanent collection exhibited in the halls of the Tippecanoe County Courthouse, which is a work of art in itself. Weekend Update: Make Goat Soap at The Farm & More!

This weekend and every weekend in our area, there’s a chance to do something very unique! If you’re feeling creative and crafty, there are two great events coming up that you can take part in! First, join expert Felicia Payne Nicholson in “Making Goat Soap” – a workshop put on at The Farm at Prophetstown on Saturday, May 19. Felicia comes from Patchwork Acres Farm and will be demonstrating the art of goat soap making. Felicia runs a very successful farm business where she makes products using milk from goats raised right on her farm. She will demonstrate milking and the process of making goat soap. Also happening this Saturday is the Spring Boutique and Craft Fair! Hosted at the Tippecanoe County Mall, there will be a exciting array of options to explore. There will be over TWENTY vendors – ranging from handmade crafts, to Pampered Chef, to It Works, to Lu La Roe. Bring your friends for a fun day of shopping, giveaways, awesome samples, and  you can support local small businesses at the same time!
