“One Great Wedding Destination” The Outpost

Outpost2014.22 Great Cities, 1 Great University, “One Great Wedding Destination”. Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana, is home to many fabulous wedding ceremony and reception venues that will make your day special. One such location that not only offers a great space to have a wedding but also a wonderful catering menu is The Outpost Catering and Banquet Facility. They offer some of the best customer service in town with delicious food and space for wedding parties up to 300 people!

It’s fall, which means we are in the midst of wedding season! Mums, pumpkins, the earthy, musty smell of falling leaves, harvest, clear blue skies, and more; this is what I think of fall! Is there a better time for a wedding? Not that I can think of! I have been to so many fall weddings, and I have to say it is my favorite season to attend someone’s special event. (You may note I did not get married in the fall, but I married a farmer and fall is off limits! ha!)

A few years ago in October, one of my dearest friends had a great big outdoor wedding.  When I say big, I should really say “huge!” They invited over 700 people and of those invited I would say almost 100% showed up. The Outpost catered the event, and they did an amazing job! The menu included pulled pork barbeque, baked potato salad, baked beans and coleslaw. The Outpost came with their big outdoor cooker and slowly cooked the BBQ to perfection. It literally melted in my mouth and the compliment of loaded potato salad, savory baked beans and crisp cole slaw was heaven! I shouldn’t admit this, but I went back for seconds! My good friend shared how wonderful the staff was to work with. Wedding planning can be stressful and she said their great customer care made her event run smoothly and relieved so much of her stress.

The Outpost Catering also has a banquet facility for rental for special events. They offer complete food service, whether it be plated or buffet, and also a full bar service with licensed bartenders. They can accommodate an event anywhere from 25-300 guests. The space is a blank canvas so brides and grooms can decorate and make it into the perfect memory-making site of their dreams. I have never attended a wedding at this venue, but we did host our National Tourism Week Social Media Workshop at this facility. The food was delicious and the customer service was exceptional.

One Great Wedding Destination; Thomas Duncan Hall

Hall

Ballroom

2 Great Cities, 1 Great University, “One Great Wedding Destination”. Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana, is home to many fabulous wedding ceremony and reception venues that will make your day special.  One such location that is not only a beautiful venue, but has historical significance in our area is Thomas Duncan Hall. This Georgian, Colonial-style building was built as a meeting place for social, patriotic, charitable, educational and cultural events in the early-mid 1900s.

Thomas Duncan Hall is special in our family because it is the location where my sister, Jenny, married her husband, Tosh, over 8 years ago.  The site selection was a tough decision for my sister because she wanted eloquence with a touch of history and romance.  She and Tosh live in Phoenix, Arizona, and they traveled back to tour different sites in the area.  When they visited Duncan Hall, they fell in love with the venue.  They loved the high ceilings, the handsome gothic windows and the large stage in the ballroom.  The additional parlor rooms speak of days gone by with the promise of creating lovely future memories.  The cherry on the cake was the acoustics.  They love dancing and music, and the ballroom has wonderful acoustics!

Their reception was so much fun!  The bridal party sat on the stage and overlooked the 150 guests.  They chose a local caterer to serve a buffet style meal which was set up in a small room off the ballroom.  (Note: there is a fully equipped kitchen along with a dinner service for up to 170 people and elegant silver serving pieces available for a reasonable rate.)  I gave the toast from the stage, which has gone down in history as one of the best toasts in our family history.  The whole room laughed as I shared my sister and my exploits over the course of our lives.  The laughter got everyone in the mood for an evening of dancing and music!   It was lovely!

Duncan Hall is a great venue for weddings and special events with its multiple rooms and ballroom. There is space for smaller parties ranging from 2 to 50, to their ballroom which can seat 220 people theater style.  The balcony also can seat 47.  The historical ambiance is one of a kind in the area.  It will truly make any special event stand out and be memorable.

Adams Mill- Architecture, history and a beautiful landscape await!

Adam's Mill

Adams Mill

Architecture, history, and a beautiful scenic landscape; this is what visitors find when they come upon Adams Mill.  This 1845 grist mill, located east of Cutler in southeastern Carroll County (east of Lafayette-West Lafayette), is a historical site not to be missed on your next visit to our area.  It is a hidden gem that tells a story of agriculture, life in the 1800s and early 1900s, and the use of water energy from Wildcat Creek to power the mill.

Dressing wheels sifted the flour. Wire or cloth screens determined the fineness.

Dressing wheels sifted the flour. Wire or cloth screens determined the fineness.

Adams Mill showcases the post and beam construction common to the 19th century agricultural structures in Indiana.  It is amazing how no nails were used in the construction of the original framework, only wooden pegs.  It really is an architecture lover’s dream!  Can you imagine building a 4-story structure today with no nails?  And the building today is in great condition.  (Thanks in large part to a group of preservation-minded citizens in the area!)

Within the mill are examples of various kinds of machinery, tools and artifacts showcasing what life was like from the early 1800’s through the mid 1950’s.  Check out these examples of transportation, agricultural machinery, and even an old fashion washing machine!

The grounds around the mill are absolutely gorgeous.  They offer the perfect setting for an outdoor wedding or special event.  Or if you want to get away for a weekend, it is a great location for tent and cabin camping.

Adams Mill Covered Bridge

Adams Mill Covered Bridge

Directly down the road is the Adams Mill Covered Bridge, which has been fully restored and spans Wildcat Creek.  It is a beautiful bridge and the most amazing part is it is fully operable.  Drivers can drive their vehicles over the bridge.  Wildcat Creek also winds under the bridge and is a great location for canoeing and kayaking.  There is a one-mile nature trail that is perfect for an afternoon of hiking.

Please note when visiting Adams Mill, to follow the driving directions on their website at www.adams-mill.org.  (When we visited this past month, we used Google maps and our IPhone mapping system, and it took us 1 mile away from the mill.)

One Great Wedding Destination – Lafayette-West Lafayette

2 Great Cities, 1 Great University, “One Great Wedding Destination”. Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana, is home to many fabulous wedding ceremony and reception venues along with a long list of excellent vendors to serve every bride and groom’s need.

Getting engaged and planning a wedding is a very exciting time in a couple’s life, yet the slew of wedding decisions can be for some people a bit daunting.  Couples ask themselves the following: Where will the wedding ceremony take place?  Should we have a small or large reception?  Who creates beautiful flower arrangements at a good price?  What’s our budget?  This is just a tiny portion of the decisions that have to be made.  The good news is the Visit Lafayette-West Lafayette team has a staff member, Ashley Gregory, who can not only assist with these questions, but make suggestions and help you find locations here in town, help with hotel sleeping room blocks and point you in the right direction for vendors (such as flowers, photographers etc.).

Most weddings have out of town guests visiting.  Ashley can help couples get the best rates at our local area hotels for these guests.  She has worked with all of our hotels, and visited reception venues, indoor and outdoor locations, traditional and unique and is a great source to take advantage of when planning a wedding.  When I was planning my wedding 3 years ago I did not live in the area and needed help planning, so I called Visit Lafayette-West Lafayette. Ashley provided me a list of reception venues, vendors, and helped me book the hotel for my guests to stay.  My mother-in-law also got in contact with Ashley for local brochures for the goodies bags for our guests.  Each guest received a complimentary Lafayette-West Lafayette visitors guide.

The best news of all is these services are free!  Weddings can be very expensive and I recommend taking advantage of these services that are helpful and make this special day in a couple’s life more spectacular.

Mammaw’s Sweet Shoppe

Isn’t this a lovely wedding cake!

Happening Now!  Right now, the talk around town is about decadent desserts and treats from Mammaw’s Sweet Shoppe.  Whether you are looking for a wedding cake, specialty cookies for a fun event, or beautifully decorated cupcakes that are pretty and tasty, this sweet shop has a dessert for everyone!

Childhood memories; Mammaw’s Sweet Shoppe holds a special place in my heart because growing up her cookies and cupcakes were a treat we enjoyed after many sporting events.  I played volleyball and basketball all through my junior and senior high school years with the owner’s niece, Janelle.  She would always bring her aunt’s homemade sugar cookies with a creamy vanilla icing or her rich chocolate or vanilla cupcakes as a treat after our games.  Win or lose, our team got to enjoy a wonderful dessert after playing our hearts out.

Through the years, Mammaw’s sweets have been a compliment to many special events in my life.  Most recent was my best friend’s bachelorette party in Indianapolis.  One of her aunts brought 2 dozen frosted sugar cookies to enjoy as we visited local wineries throughout the Indianapolis area.  These cookies were shaped as beautiful flowers with vibrant colored icing ranging from hot pink to light purple.  There were about twelve of us women, and these cookies were devoured in no time.

Planning a wedding, special event, or just craving a sugary treat, make sure you head to Mammaw’s Sweet Shoppe.  From the diverse cake flavors; key lime to snickerdoodle to the classic red velvet, guests will be very satisfied.  Nothing beats a good ol’ homemade cookie, and Mammaw’s bakes up a legendary chocolate chip cookie and nearly world famous sugar cookie!

Cutting the cake!

Judi’s Catering

2 Great Cities, 1 Great University, “One Great Wedding Destination”. Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana, is home to many fabulous wedding venues, and Judi’s Catering, which opened in 1967 with what started out as helping a friend serve a cocktail party, has grown to become 16,000 square feet of banquet space that can accommodate 900 people!

One of my first wedding memories was sharing in my fourth grade teachers’ wedding celebration at Judi’s Catering.  My teacher decided to invite one boy and one girl from her class to attend. She chose to pick a name out of a hat to select the winner and I felt so excited to have won.  The winners and their families were invited to her wedding ceremony at a local church and the reception at Judi’s Catering.

This day was full of excitement and cheer as my teacher walked down the aisle at a beautifully decorated church, said her “I do’s” to her handsome husband and then officially became a Mrs.!  With the church ceremony over, the real party started at Judi’s Catering!  I remember walking into Judi’s Catering and stopping and staring at the gorgeous decorations, which were a mix of winter white and silver flowers and centerpieces.  One corner was a cocktail area and it was the first time I had ever seen an ice sculpture, which had Champaign running through it.  We took our seats and awaited an evening of fun and laughter.  The dance floor was hopping all night long and the guests left plenty satisfied from a deliciously catered meal.

I have been back to Judi’s Catering for other weddings, meetings, and auctions, but this memory is special because there seemed to be magic in the air that night.  It may be the 9 year old child in me talking, but it was a fabulous venue and an evening worth remembering.

Judi’s Catering has been in business for 32 years and is an individually owned and operated catering and banquet facility in Lafayette.  They can host any kind of event from weddings, showers, business meetings, themed parties, etc. and with 32 years of business they have really expanded on their food selections.  If you crave a Scottish Highlander feast, they can create it.  Or better yet, a down home barbecue can be cooked to satisfy your food senses!

Ross-Ade Pavilion- Wedding Site Destination

2 Great Cities, 1 Great University, “One Great Wedding Destination”. Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana, is home to many fabulous wedding venues, and one of the most unique is Ross-Ade Pavilion. Situated overlooking the Purdue Boilermaker football field where college history has been made, this pavilion offers not one, but three different spaces to hold a wedding or special event.

Have you ever been to a wedding that is so memorable it instantly comes to mind when you hear the word “wedding“? When this memory pops in your head is it the location, the food, the fun, or the overall wonder you experienced at the wedding that you think of? I bet, if you have ever been to a wedding at Ross Ade Pavilion, your instant reaction would be enthusiasm for the beautiful setting and the majestic views of Purdue University and Ross-Ade Stadium.

Ross-Ade Pavilion can accommodate wedding parties up to 800 people (400 seated). Many people hearing this number may gasp at imagining a wedding this large, but my best friend’s brother had his wedding reception here, and they had around 400 guests. (I am from a small community, and when folks get married, they invite the whole town, which equals about 400 people!) I was so excited to be invited to this wedding, and my expectations were high. I had been to football games at Purdue and the idea of overlooking the whole stadium energized me! Upon entering the Shively Club, the largest room available at Ross-Ade, my eyes went directly to all the windows. I took in the wonderful view of the stadium and beyond was the campus that was full of bright fall colors as the leaves shone with their splendor.

The view was just a part of why my experience was memorable. The food, service and dancing all stand out as being exceptional. With 400 attendees, the dance floor was full all night long. I danced until my feet were blue and my husband had to drag me away so I could still walk in the morning! I enjoy nice servers, and I have to say “kudos” to the college staff that worked this event. They always had our drinks refilled and were friendly. Purdue University should be proud!
