News alert – it’s Thanksgiving time special celebrations at Wolf Park! This Saturday, November 28 make a trip to Wolf Park to participate in the Turkey Toss! As part of Wolf Park’s environmental enrichment program, designed to make their wolves’ lives in captivity the best they can possibly be, they celebrate each season by distributing seasonally-themed munchies to their four-footed friends. Thanksgiving is no exception as we give thanks that we have wolves in the United States and the wolves at Wolf Park for being an educational ambassador for their wild counter parts.  Each animal receives their very own turkey and the guests at Wolf Park get to help!  Special helpers are chosen to throw a thanksgiving treat, turkeys to the wolves, small turkeys to the coyotes and Cornish game hens to the foxes!

Support our local shops this Saturday, November 29 during Small Business Saturday! From visits with Santa to extraordinary deals and discounts, this is the day to head out and shop till you drop! In 2013, 32 local businesses participated and this year there are over 45! From local boutiques to coffee shops, a brewery and more, this day will not only allow you to shop, but to get into the holiday spirit. Last year I spent the day out shopping downtown Lafayette, and it was a blast! I can’t wait for another weekend of fun!

More holiday cheer is taking place Saturday, November 29 and Sunday, November 30. Get the whole family in a festive mood with a Holiday Tour of the Haan Mansion Museum of Indiana Art. The Haan Museum will collaborate with the Wabash Valley Trust for Historic Preservation to present a family-friendly tour that includes even more for the kid in all of us.  The Museum will again feature a Christmas train traveling through several rooms, decorated with Dickens Villages. A new gingerbread house is large enough to accommodate several youngsters. Multiple animated figures invite kids to touch.  Decorated trees, Santa’s, angels, nativities, and Lafayette houses fill the Museum. Holiday fun at its best!

Did you know there is one less week in between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year?  Which means one less week of shopping for Christmas!  With Black Friday and Small Business Saturday upon us, we recommend heading to the shops for some fabulous holiday shopping this weekend.  Truthfully, I have never hit the shops on Black Friday.  The shopping frenzy I hear from friends is a rush like one wouldn’t imagine.  But the crowds make me anxious, so the last few years I have opted to shop during Small Business Saturday.  The small shops are busy, but there is a laid-back feel that calms my shopping anxiety nerves!

Last year, I headed downtown with my Mom and Great Aunt on Small Business Saturday to shop at the eclectic, specialty shops and art galleries.  We enjoyed the crisp, cool air as we journeyed in between all the shops on Main Street from 5th Street north to 11th Street.  At Le Originals/Something Special I purchased handmade cake testers that have unique glass ornamental tops to put in family members’ stockings.  They were a huge hit!  I bought candles that smelled like gingerbread (Christmas wonderfulness!) for a few of my friends from Walnut Street Traditions.  I even bought an early birthday gift, a handcrafted ceramic vase, for my sister (whose birthday is in March!) from Grateful Heart Gallery.  Two Tulips has the most unique piggy banks, and I got a sports decorated piggy bank for a friend’s son that was recently born.  They even personalized it with his name!

Next we drove to West Lafayette to shop at one of our favorite boutiques, Gretel’s Fine Gifts.  I can always count on finding holiday gifts at this store and I was not disappointed!  I purchased a pretty, pink scarf for my mother in-law, a granite cutting board (for wine and cheese parties) for my mom, and I couldn’t resist purchasing the cutest reindeer decoration for our house!  Our last stop of the day was Route 66 where not only did we scarf down burgers, chili and shakes, but we each bought ourselves a purse from their vast array of accessories.  It was an awesome day!

Make sure you do not miss Small Business Saturday this Saturday, November 30 from 11 am to 6 pm.  For more information about these events and other special “happenings” in Lafayette-West Lafayette, check out our website at www.HomeOfPurdue.com
