Specialty Pizza at its Best – Midtowne Oven

Pizza, pizza, pizza! Lafayette-West Lafayette is home to some pretty fabulous pizza joints, and there is one that is becoming a rising star in the area, Midtowne Oven. This restaurant that opened its doors in the past few years offers fresh and inspired flavors centered around the area’s only real wood fired oven. The menu at Midtowne Oven presents your palate exciting flavors featuring the finest high-quality ingredients.

Our family loves pizza! We are a bit of pizza snobs when it comes to picking out what restaurants we feel offer the most delicious pizza. We want only the best! And in our opinion, Midtowne Oven is offering some of the best pizza in the area. Their hand tossed crust, homemade Midtowne pizza sauce, in house created mozzarella and fresh toppings all fired up in a real wood fired oven make a decadent pie! We always get pepperoni and ricotta on our pizza and it is superb. Better yet are the leftovers! Most pizzas left over taste like cardboard. I actually almost like this pizza better heated up the next day!

What compliments pizza? Appetizers! They have 4 appetizers to choose from; spinach artichoke dip, garlic dough, My Momma’s Homemade Meatballs, and Brussel sprout skewers. We have tried them all!  We usually fight over who gets the last garlic dough to dip in the creamy spinach artichoke dip. The Brussel sprouts are a healthier choice but with the creamy chipotle aioli and bacon they create a vegetable sensation.  I am saving my favorite for last, the My Momma’s Homemade Meatballs. What to say?  They are amazing! I like to boast I make the best homemade meatballs, but these have mine beat. We usually never order meatballs out, but my husband ordered their meatball sub a few months ago, and I begged him for more.  Now we usually order a couple appetizer orders to start our meal!  (Please note there are only 2 adults and 1 four-year-old in our party…that is how much we love them!)

We have tried a few entrees as well that are worth mentioning! The Grown Up Mac N’ Cheese is the perfect blend of cheese, bacon, tomatoes and crispy onions.  My father in-law ordered the Porchetta recently as well. It is an herb stuffed pork roulade crusted with crispy panko topped with almond romesco over parmesan risotto. Wow! It was amazing. So flavorful and the risotto is cooked perfectly.  It is so hard not to want to order their pizza every time, but these 2 meals make it difficult!

If you are on a budget and want to try out this restaurant, they also offer some great specials throughout the week.

  1. Monday: 1/2 price pizza
  2. Tuesday: 1/2 price wine
  3. Wednesday: 15% off all sandwiches
  4. Thursday: 1/2 price appetizers

Visit this restaurant on your next dining night out! You will be thrilled with your choice!  For more information about this restaurant and others in our area visit HomeOfPurdue.com.

Taste the Hype at Azzip Pizza

When Lafayette and West Lafayette received word that Azzip Pizza would be coming to the area, no one could contain their excitement. After finally trying it for myself, I realized what all the hype was about. Everything from the name of the restaurant to the pizza itself is unique and wonderful.

The story behind Azzip Pizza is a very special one. Purdue’s own alumni Brad Niemeier is the founder of this new and amazing establishment. He graduated from Purdue’s Hospitality and Tourism program in 2012. Azzip started when Brad won the Burton D. Morgan Business Plan Competition at Purdue University. In 2013 Brad opened his first store in Evansville. There are currently 7 Azzip pizza locations and we are proud to have one right here in Lafayette.

What does the word “Azzip” even mean? Try looking at the word backwards. This simple yet fun name has a wholesome story behind it. You can get the details behind the name inspiration and more background information about Azzip here: https://azzippizza.com/2017/06/the-start-up/

You can order a specialty pizza full of your favorite flavors or keep it simple with a traditional cheese pizza. Whatever your taste desires, Azzip has it. Azzip has 2 sizes of pizzas called the “Little Zip” and “Big Zip”. The big zip is 11 inches and the little zip is 8 inches. The Azzip experience is laid back, quick, and gives you all the choices you need to create a great meal in a timely fashion. You choose your dough size and walk through the line selecting your sauce, meats, and veggies you want on your pizza. You can always choose one of the specialty pizzas referred to as “Azzip Picks” as well. The E’vil Pig is full of flavor and is unlike any pizza you’ve had before.  This pizza is loaded with sweet ‘n sassy BBQ sauce, mozzarella, slow smoked pork, red onion, and Grippos in a Ski reduction. What is Grippos and a Ski reduction, you ask? It is barbecue Grippos potato chips and a sweet reduction sauce made from local Ski citrus soda.

The environment at Azzip is very modern and exciting. Your Azzip experience doesn’t end when you reach the end of the order line. The Azzip staff takes care of you during your entire visit. Azzip is the perfect dining option for a easy and tasty lunch or a quick but relaxing dinner.

This isn’t your normal pizza place. Your experience will be full of color, speed, quality, and satisfaction from beginning to end. Don’t just take my word for it, go check it out! Azzip Pizza is located at 105 Farabee Dr S suite B in Lafayette. Check out this new addition to the area.

Local Eats at Parkway Pizza

1a70120d55329444fcfec7348c4906a53074171f97623f4579fc10b114e598ddDo you ever crave delicious pizza, but don’t want to go with a chain restaurant? Parkway pizza is a local pizza delivery, carry out, and dine in restaurant in Lafayette. Located at 405 Sagamore Pkwy S Ste B-1, this pizza joint is at the center of your busy life.

The menu includes much more than just pizza. Sandwiches, gyros, calzones, and a whole variety of items are included in the menu. The full menu is sure to have something you will enjoy. After considering many different options I decided to go with a mouthwatering calzone filled with pepperoni and cheese. I was very happy with my decision.

Corey had a meat lover’s calzone and Ashley had a deluxe pizza. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. We decided to end our meal with fresh baklava. It was my first time having baklava and Parkway Pizza baklava exceeded my expectations! The baklava was very fresh and warm. It was a great treat to end our meal.

After eating at Parkway Pizza, Ashley said “The hand tossed pizza crust is light and fluffy and the pizza is loaded with toppings. Best pizza I’ve had in a while. The baklava has generous portions and is perfectly sweet and flaky! My new favorite pizza place!”.

Hidden Gem: Buck Creek Pizza

IMG_8336Such a hidden gem! Buck Creek Pizza has blown me away! On a trip to visit some smaller unique places my co-worker and I stopped in for lunch at this Dayton location. You must give this place a try as soon as possible!

IMG_8337As we walked into the small storefront in Dayton, we could see straight back into the kitchen. I find it so reassuring when a restaurant is willing to allow you to see what exactly is going on with your food. The lady we spoke with was very friendly and asked if it was our first time in. I am guessing that means she is quite familiar with most of their clients. After a difficult time deliberating, we agreed to share the potato skins and a small pepperoni pizza. We were totally wrong when we thought that would be just the right amount of food.

By the time we were finished stuffing our faces, we still had food left over! For just about $20 the two of us were both satisfied and we were able to bring the extras back to a friend for her to have for lunch. By the time we had ordered up at the window many other customers had come in as well. It seemed like the lady working knew most of them. I can definitely understand making Buck Creek a regular lunch spot!

IMG_8334The atmosphere is cozy. The walls are covered in what looks like a log cabin. The tables are large as well as the benches and chairs. Many sets of people could share one table, which makes the place feel very friendly. You order up at a counter looking back into the kitchen and are able to fill up your own drinks at the Coke machine.

Buck Creek also delivers their food in these little tiny smart cars. Check with them to see if your home or office is within reach of their delivery area. This was a great little spot to eat lunch and I will totally be back soon. All of the food was delicious and the people are extremely friendly. On your next excursion near Dayton, be sure to try Buck Creek. They are open Monday-Thursday 11:00am-9:00pm, Friday-Saturday 11:00am-10:00pm, and Sunday 4:00pm-9:00pm. Lunch specials run weekdays from 11:00am-2:00pm. Buck Creek Pizza Co. is locally owned and operated.

Pizza, Pizza, Pizza! Bruno’s is the place for this and more!

Famous Bruno Dough!

Famous Bruno Dough!

Happening Now! Right now, the talk around town is about food and the fabulous restaurants that offer homemade cuisine at its finest! One of these local restaurants that have been in business since 1955 is Bruno’s Pizza and Big O’s Sports Room. Hand-tossed pizza, famous Bruno dough, fresh garden salads, and house specialties (veal, bratwurst and manicotti just to name a few), there is something for everyone at Bruno’s.

If I had the time I could spend hours writing about Bruno’s.  My family has been going to Bruno’s since before I was born; it was one of my parents’ first dates over 35 years ago! This past year we celebrated my mother’s 60th birthday here.  It was a surprise party and we invited 60 of her closest friends and family. Bruno’s was perfect because they have 3 separate dining rooms and we were able to use the whole front room called the Swiss Room. The room fits the name as it is decorated as though it was right out of a Swiss Chalet in Switzerland and the restaurant’s roots stem from this beautiful country. Bruno Itin Sr. immigrated to Indiana from his home in Switzerland.  Bruno Sr. passed away in 2006, but his two sons and daughter run the restaurant along with 6 granddaughters who all work at the restaurant. It is truly a family business!

My mom and cousin enjoying her birthday!

My mom and cousin enjoying her birthday!

My mom was completely shocked and excited when she arrived to a room full of over joyous friends and family. All the guests were not only happy to celebrate this day, but have the opportunity to eat Bruno’s delicious pizza.  To those throwing a party this is the place to go!  You get a private room, great food, and wonderful customer service for a very reasonable price.  For a set cost per person, it was unlimited pizza (this included specialty pizzas), Bruno dough and salad!  (Please note for big parties, anything on their menu can be ordered.)  One of my aunts cannot eat cheese.  What is pizza without cheese?  But Bruno’s made her a special pizza with a bunch of vegetables and meats and she was ecstatic.  She said it was wonderful and the funny part is other friends ate it too and they had to make another!

Friends enjoying the party!

New Pizza Bar in Town- Professor Joe’s Sports Pub & Pizzeria

IMG_24702 Great Cities, 1 Great University, “One Great Pizza Destination“.  Lafayette-West Lafayette is home to some pretty fabulous pizza restaurants, and we are excited to announce a new place has entered the mix that offers a cool bar setting in a fabulous location downtown.  Professor Joe’s Sports Pub & Pizzeria opened this past fall and is serving pizza, sandwiches and calzones.

Located in the heart of downtown Lafayette at 648 Main Street, Professor Joe’s Sports Pub & Pizzeria states it is a great place to split a “Pitcher and a Pie” with a friend and cheer on your favorite team while watching the game.  This bar is brightly lit and is full of big screen T.V.’s throughout the space.  The booths are deep for big groups of friends who want to gather and enjoy each other’s company.

Garlic Cheese Bread!

Garlic Cheese Bread!

Recently, the Visit Lafayette-West Lafayette team had lunch at this pizza joint.  (We always like to try out new places so we can share our experiences with visitors!)  We started our meal with their garlic knots and garlic cheese bread, which were both awesome!  I would come here just for their garlic knots that were light and fluffy with the perfect amount of garlic and came with a side of slightly spicy cheese sauce.

Slice of Pepperoni & the Tailgater!

Slice of Pepperoni & the Tailgater!

Every day they offer special slices of pizza customers can order.  I picked their pepperoni and a specialty pizza called the Tailgater; grilled chicken, buffalo sauce, drizzled with ranch dressing and topped with chopped up celery.  Odd combination, I know!  But I was glad for the diversity of flavor so I could choose which I enjoyed more. The Tailgater won the contest!  The sauce was spicy, but not overly so!  The chicken was juicy and flavorful.  Altogether it was a winning combination.

Our server was friendly and seemed really excited about working at this new establishment.  She was knowledgeable about the food and prompt and accommodating.  I also really enjoyed the ambiance.  Some bars can be kind of dirty and dark. Professor Joe’s is clean, bright, and has a beautiful bar that shined to perfection.

Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo

2 Great Cities, 1 Great University “Midwest Hospitality”.  To experience “Midwest Hospitality” at its finest visit Puccini’s in West Lafayette where the food is exceptional and the service is top-notch!

I have been to Puccini’s many times and every visit has been great, but my most recent visit was the best.  My girlfriends and I were meeting up to grab a quick bite to eat and then head across the street to Wabash Landing 9 to watch the new Batman movie, Dark Night Rises. We were so pumped to see the new movie.  We told our waitress where we were headed and she said she would make sure we made it on time.  When ordering, I asked her advice on what to order and she gave truthful recommendations.  She shared the spinach artichoke dip was superb and she was straight on.  It was the perfect blends of rich cheeses, fresh spinach and artichokes and the amazing part was there was not a speck of grease (which made our bellies thank her later!).

This waitress, whose name I sadly do not remember, was outstanding!  For my entree, after I shared I was not extremely hungry and would be heading over to a movie after dinner so any left-overs would go bad in my car, recommended I order the children’s portion of the chicken fettuccine.  (Note: this is not the norm, but this waitress listened to what I wanted and suggested the best choice.)  May I ask you, how many times have you ever had a waiter or waitress recommend something that will make your bill smaller?  Usually servers try to get diners to spend more money so they get larger tips.  This young lady was honest and her recommendation was perfect.  The chicken fettuccine was creamy, very filling and the chicken was cooked perfectly.  For her truthfulness, I left her an extra large tip and I will be heading to Puccini’s more often to eat their scrumptious food.

Calzone filled with mushrooms, black olives, artichoke hearts and feta cheese!

My girlfriends also walked away with smiles on their faces.  Ashley had a calzone filled with mushrooms, black olives, artichoke hearts and feta cheese with a side of garlic butter.  I am definitely putting it on my list of “must-eats” at Puccini’s.  Marlene had the Lean Machine pizza which she shared, “It rocks!”

Buck Creek Pizza

2 Great Cities, 1 Great University “Midwest Hospitality”.  To experience “Midwest Hospitality” at its finest visit Buck Creek Pizza in Buck Creek and/or Dayton, Indiana, for a slice of thick crust, mouth watering pizza.

I remember the first time I heard about Buck Creek Pizza.  It was probably about 5 years ago.  My Dad is a salesman and he travels all over the northern part of Indiana. I was visiting my parents and he was exclaiming about a new pizza place he had heard about from his customers.  They shared that the restaurant offers a different style of pizza than many places in this area, with its thick crust and opulent toppings. Also, it is located in a small town called Buck Creek, where the locals are friendly and the service laid back, which is our favorite type of place to visit!  So we set a date to eat at this establishment!

My first memory of this visit is driving into the small town of Buck Creek, located between Lafayette and Delphi, Indiana.  I am from a small town of 500 people and this town may have it beat with its small population. Buck Creek Pizza is at the center of this cute, quaint setting.  As soon as we entered we were greeted by the friendly owners, and a local couple recommended we order one of the lunch specials.  May I ask, what is better than friendly locals who welcome you?  It made us feel special and welcomed into their small town.  My next memory is tasting their pizza, which has a rich, tomato pizza sauce and a crust that is thick yet dense.  The toppings were fresh and hearty, and literally, one slice made a whole meal!  My co-worker Judy describes it best, “An abundance of toppings creates a slice of heaven.  And to top it off, they have great delivery service!”

Buck Creek Pizza, today, has 2 locations; Buck Creek and Dayton, Indiana.  They offer dine in, carry out, and delivery at both restaurants. Also, I have seen their booth at local festivals, where festival goers can taste their pizza.

Living in Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana, one thing we value is customer service and appreciating the times we receive great customer care.  Midwest Hospitality is Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana.  We are proud of our local businesses, including Buck Creek Pizza, that provide gracious and friendly service. To experience “Midwest Hospitality” at its finest visit Bruno’s Restaurant.  You will receive not only great customer service at this local establishment, but eat some of the best pizza around!
My husband and I are creatures of habit.  We can be spontaneous if the moment hits us, but overall we like the simple things in life.  We like to go to local restaurants and shops and we love it when they know our name.  I think it is being from a small town.  In the town we grew up in, everyone knows everyone, and where some people would be annoyed by this, we think it is comforting.
Since moving to Lafayette-West Lafayette, we have eaten at many establishments, and Bruno’s has became our comfort.  When we arrive at Bruno’s the waitress shows up with our drinks.  She knows we always order breadsticks with both cheese and meaty marinara sauce.  We do change up our main course order though.  It is hard not to order their pizza every time (it is so delicious!), but they offer so many wonderful culinary creations from homemade manicotti to fried catfish to strombolis!  My husband and I share a meal every visit and sometimes we still have left-overs.  A little tip when ordering a sandwich that comes with fries…they make a homemade blue cheese dressing (which I have begged for the recipe) that is the perfect dipping sauce.
Bruno’s is a comfort to many from locals, Purdue college students and alumni and visitors.  I would say it is a Lafayette-West Lafayette trademark.  If a visitor wants authentic Midwest Hospitality, delicious food and a true local experience, he or she needs to visit Bruno’s Restaurant in West Lafayette, Indiana.
