Weekend Update: Nutcracker & Pickin’ Pear

Since 1990, Lafayette Ballet Company has been performing the full-length NUTCRACKER in early January at Long Center. For 2019 the company presents their complete ballet on Jan. 5 at 2 PM and 7:30 PM, and on Jan. 6 at 2 PM. The sumptuous Tchaikovsky music, the brilliant costumes and sets, the energetic dancing of 40 dancers, and the classic story of a young girl’s dreams are a treat for all ages. Tickets go on sale December 3, 2018 at Lafayette Ballet – 628 Main Street, 47901.

More entertainment is happening Jan. 4 at 9 PM. People’s Live presents: Pickin’ Pear with Naomi Rae at the Knickerbocker Saloon. Tia Martini and Leon Elam – The Pickin’ Pear – branch out from Canyon Collected to create a folk ‘n’ roll duo. They combine their non-traditional stylings to their traditional instruments and create an original mix of modern American music. Together the Pickin’ Pear take the banjo and ukulele down the road of folk, rock, and bluegrass. Sometimes the ukulele will even launch you straight to outer space. A blend of top-notch songwriting and improvisational jamming makes each one of their songs sound unique.

Start the new year off right enjoying the classic, the Nutcracker, on January 9 and 10. The joyful production brought each year to the Long Center is a family favorite for the start of the New Year, and a special time to appreciate the talents of dancers and guest artists right here in Lafayette. Enjoy beautiful music, dancing and more as the Long Center is brought to life with this holiday classic.

Cheer on our Purdue Women’s Basketball Team as they take on rival, IU. This game is the Boilermaker Kids Club game, so bring the little ones to cheer with Boiler passion and love.  Let’s fill Mackey Arena up and show IU what Boilermakers are all about. We can feel a win coming our way. Boiler Up!

Back by popular demand, the Lafayette Ballet Company presents the full-length ballet of the Nutcracker on January 10 and 11. Music by P.I.Tchaikovsky, and luscious period costumes and sets highlighted by the exuberant dancing of the young Lafayette Ballet Artists along with guest artists and graduates. Magic comes alive as dancers use grace and harmony to dance to music created in the 1800s by the famous Russian composer Tchaikovsky.

Have you ever heard of the famous Brandenburg Concert by J.S. Bach? It is a collection of six instrumental works presented by Bach to Christian Ludwig, Margrave of Brandenburg-Schwedt, in 1721 (though probably composed earlier). They are widely regarded as some of the best orchestral compositions of the Baroque era. The Tippecanoe Chamber Music Society presents Brandenburg on Sunday, January 11 and this concert will brighten our souls in this rare performance of these most beloved works.

The Long Center

This Saturday, January 5, and Sunday, January 6, starts the New Year off right at the production of The Nutcracker, presented by the Lafayette Ballet Co. The joyful production brought each year to the Long Center for the Performing Arts is a family favorite for the start of the New Year, and a special time to appreciate the talents of dancers and guest artists right here in Lafayette. Special memories are created on this magical night of dancing and artistic performances.

Have you ever howled with the wolves?  You can!  This Saturday, January 5, at 7:30pm join the wolves as they howl the night away at the Wolf Park Howl Night.  This is a night that features a lecture on wolf communication, the opportunity to see some of the staff enter the enclosure and interact with the wolves of their main pack, and the chance to howl with the wolves.  Wolf Park also features bison, coyotes, foxes and more!

The Nutcracker & Purdue Track & Field

A worldwide classic, The Nutcracker, is being performed this weekend by the Lafayette Ballet Company and School at the Long Center for the Performing Arts in Lafayette, Indiana.  The 23rd  season of this spectacular show is a holiday classic that has charm for all ages. This beautifully trained company of dancers bring the classical corps de ballet sections of the Waltz of the Flowers and the Snowflakes vividly to  life.

If you are looking for some sporting action this weekend, head to West Lafayette, Indiana, to watch our Purdue men and women track and field teams compete in the Purdue Invitational.  The invitational starts at 11:00 a.m. at Rankin Track and Field (indoor complex).  Cheer on Purdue as they sprint, jump, throw, and run their way to victory!
