Nine Irish Brothers in Lafayette opened its doors ten years ago, and they are going to celebrate this Friday, November 9! They will have giveaways, drinks specials ($1 off Guinness, Nine Irish Red, and Irish Butts), as well as some GREAT music from Ireland’s favorite son Brendan Loughrey! Brendan is a talented, energetic Irish musician with a huge repertoire of songs, including originals such as  Kenny Chesney,” and “Livin’ in the Heart of Ireland,” as well as outstanding renditions of traditional Irish tunes. He’s a great guy, as fun as he is talented, perfect for a celebration!

The Purdue Theatre Department showcases the musical, Next to Normal on Friday, November 9 and Saturday, November 10. The winner of the Pulitzer Prize for drama and three Tony awards, Next to Normal presents an unflinching look at a suburban family struggling with the effects of mental illness, set to a rock music score. Dad’s an architect; Mom rushes to pack lunches and pour cereal; their daughter and son are bright, wise-cracking teens, appearing to be a typical American family. And yet their lives are anything but normal because the mother has been battling manic depression for 16 years. Next to Normal takes audiences into the minds and hearts of each character, presenting their family’s story with love, sympathy and heart.

Start your weekend off right and head to Nine Irish Brothers in Lafayette to listen to the band, Highland Reign perform on Friday, March 3. This Scots-American folk rock band from Indianapolis, takes traditional Celtic tunes and breathes a new (rocking) life into them. With over 10,000 CD’s of their most recent release, “Carry On,” Highland Reign has built a reputation for their trademark upbeat vocals, blazing fiddle, catchy lyrics, and wailing bagpipes and guitars. Not only is their music enjoyable and entertaining (you’ll find yourself clapping along, tapping your toe, and maybe even dancing a jig before you know what hits you), but their showmanship is outstanding as well. Patrick, Les, and Brian are great people for spending a fun evening of music and craic.

More musical entertainment take place on Sunday, March 5. Head to Purdue University for the Brahms Fest, a Tippecanoe Chamber Music Society concert. ISO’s Principal Clarinetist David Bellman and members of the Ronen Ensemble will perform Brahms’ Clarinet Quintet Op.115. The DePauw Trio will share the program performing Brahms’ B major Trio for piano, violin and cello.

Performances include original songs, re-imagined traditional Irish and Scottish tunes, and unexpected covers.

Goat Cheese

Goat Cheese Fritters

There are so many wonderful menu items at Nine Irish Brothers that it is hard for me to share only a few that I recommend.  But if I had to pick my ultimate favorites I would suggest their Goat Cheese Fritters as my appetizer pick. Four generous fritters deep-fried to a golden brown, served on a bed of field greens with a light drizzle of raspberry vinaigrette. Definitely share this appetizer, as it is really rich!! Now onto the main dish. If you are at an Irish restaurant, traditional Irish food is a must. With this said, you cannot go wrong with ordering Baby Jer’s Guinness Stew, a hearty portion of their homemade stew, featuring slow-simmered Angus beef pot roast, vegetables, and a hint of Guinness Irish Stout broth, topped with champ mashed potatoes. Save room for dessert! Embark on Judy’s Irish Whiskey Creme Brulee, a delectable creme brulee wrapped in warm cinnamon-bun bread, with a light drizzle of our sweet Irish whiskey sauce. Delicious!

This past summer, two of our closest friends got married at Purdue University.  They had their rehearsal dinner at Nine Irish Brothers.  It was such a fun, yet relaxing atmosphere.  The Irish food was hearty, the beer was dark and rich, and the music was uplifting.  It was an evening where people came together to celebrate the joining of two lives in a positive, enjoyable environment.  And to top off the evening, the wait-service was great!  (I always say, the food can be exceptional, but if it is served with a frown then it makes the taste below par.)

O’Bryan’s Nine Irish Brothers Pub

IMG_5768O’Bryan’s Nine Irish Brothers Traditional Irish Pub serves up traditional Irish pub fare in a lively, tavern setting. With locations in both Lafayette and West Lafayette (West Lafayette being the original), everyone has a chance to sample of of their delicious, hearty food. In addition to the charming wooden interior, with most of the decor coming straight from Ireland, handpicked by the owners, the restaurant also features outdoor patio seating. The thought of enjoying a glass of Guinness in the open-air lures in many passerby.

The mood at Nine Irish is always high-energy. Servers (some dressed in kilts) will make sure your cup is always toIMG_5773pped off with your favorite frosty beverage or amber-colored whiskey. Nine Irish has a wide selection of beer, whiskey, wines and draughts. Some of these beverages, like Guinness are deviously added to some of the lip-smacking menu items, such as the Guinness Stew. The stew is a combination of slow-simmered beef, Angus pot-roast and of course, a dash of Guinness Stew. My personal favorite menu item is the warm, crispy, battered fish, served with a side of pub chips, and a cup of lobster bisque. The bisque makes for a decadent, rich appetizer. I highly recommend this dish if you’re looking for a great place to get fish n’ chips.

Every dish at Nine Irish has an unique flavor combination that artfully combines the recipes of old with some modern inspirations. Nine Irish proudly serves several Irish-American classics like, Bobby’s Corned Beef and Cabbage. This plentiful portion of slow-cooked, melt-in-your mouth corned beef and steamed cabbage is heaped over a mess of champ-mashed potatoes. Whatever you decide to try at Nine Irish Brothers is sure to please your palate. A warm, full-belly of delicious Irish-American fare is a guarantee when you visit O’Bryan’s Nine Irish Pub.

For those of you who are wondering where the name comes from too… it’s an interesting story. The family is originally from Cork (hence the Irish theme) and Jerry O’Bryan, the principal owner of Nine Irish Brothers is the youngest of nine boys. He also has 5 sisters and honors them with an inscription above the bar that says: “& Five Irish Sisters”. The Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette presents “Bus Stop” this Friday, Saturday and Sunday (January 24-26)!  This play takes guests to the middle of a howling snowstorm where a bus out of Kansas City pulls up at a cheerful roadside diner.  All roads are blocked, and four or five weary travelers are going to have to hole up until morning.  Cherie, a nightclub Chanteuse in a sparkling gown and a seedy fur-trimmed jacket, is the passenger with the most to worry about.  She’s been pursued and kidnapped by a twenty-one-year-old cowboy with a ranch of his own and romantic methods of a headstrong bull.  The belligerent cowhand is right behind her, ready to sling her over his shoulder and carry her, alive and kicking, all the way to Montana.  Even as she is ducking out from his clumsy embraces, she muses “Somehow deep inside of me, I got a funny feeling I’m gonna end up in Montana…”  Other stories abound in this classic “Slice of life” play is a romantic and funny portrayal of Mid-Western life, mid-twentieth century.

Music abounds at Nine Irish Brothers this weekend!  On Friday, January 24, Highland Reign performs at Nine Irish Brothers in Lafayette for a night of excellence in Celtic rock!  This trio of lads from Indianapolis is talented and energetic. On the same evening in West Lafayette, enjoy traditional Irish music with Traveler’s Dream, a folk trio based in Lafayette, Indiana.  Traveler’s Dream plays music that is rich in tradition but driven by innovation and creativity. Don’t miss at the Nine Irish Brothers in West Lafayette on Saturday, January 25, the upbeat Celtic rock from Two2Many!  Two2Many is a convergence of old and new; talented musicians from previous bands combining with a fresh young voice that not only perform classic pieces but add humor and fun to the event.
