Chumley’s – Football & Food Madness!

IMG_0731Happening Now!  Right now, the talk around town is about spending an afternoon or evening with friends cheering on our Purdue football team and/or Indianapolis Colts at Chumley’s Pub in Lafayette, Indiana, while snacking on loaded nachos and burgers!

I am so excited for this upcoming weekend!  My husband’s best guy friends from college and their wives or girlfriends are coming for the weekend.  They are traveling from all over the Midwest to spend the weekend with us and to tailgate and attend the Purdue football game against the Northern Illinois Huskies on Saturday.  They will all arrive Friday evening, and to follow tradition, we will all head to Chumley’s to eat pub food, catch up on everything new going on in each other’s lives, and watch sports.

IMG_1452Chumley’s holds a special place in my heart because it was the location where I met all my husband’s friends.  It was a great place to relax and get to know everyone, and I have come to truly love all his college buddies.  Chumley’s also has great food!  My husband and I go loco over their nachos.  We get them loaded and ask for double the amount of the cheese.  The only critical part is deciding if we want chili or chicken nachos.  Both are fabulous!

Burgers and beers are another part of Chumley’s that make it a “hot spot” in Lafayette!  With a selection of over 25 burgers, 50 beers on tap and 100 beers bottled, guests have many options to choose from.  Our friends like to think of themselves as “beer” aficionados, and they always try diverse beers that personally I have never heard of (but I am a beer novice!).  I know if they lived here they would join the Chumley’s Pub Passport Club, where visitors can sample 50 different beers from around the world and earn a Beer Club t-shirt and their name behind the bar.  They may have actually done this in college. I will have to ask this weekend!

Dawson’s School House of Chili

Happening Now!  Right now, the talk around town is about this cold, wintry weather, and the best place to warm up is with a hearty meal at Dawson’s School House of Chili located on Purdue University campus in West Lafayette, Indiana.  There is nothing like a big bowl of chili to make the winter blues go away and after a visit to Dawson’s you will be restored and ready to embrace this chilly weather!

Vegetarian, Cincinnati, Tailgate, Old School, White Chicken, California, and Spicy; these are the many chili options available at Dawson’s.  As an American culture, I can say I do not know anyone who does not like chili.  It is a winter staple, if not a year-round one.  (Personally, sometimes in the middle of summer I crave a big bowl of chili.)  We all have our own personal way we like our chili.  I grew up in northern Indiana, and my mother and aunts made chili with ground beef, hot kidney beans, tomato sauce, onions, peppers and lots of seasonings.  I have friends from the Cincinnati area and they put their chili on top of a bed of spaghetti.  I have tried it, and it just doesn’t feel right, ha!

The best part about Dawson’s is the many chili choices.  You can also mix the different chili options they offer.  Their vegetarian chili is a favorite of Visit Lafayette-West Lafayette President, Jo.  She loves it because of the options to make the chili spicier. My top choice in the winter is their Spicy chili, which is their traditional chili with ground beef, chili peppers, black beans, tomatoes, garlic, and spices.  It warms my blood!  I also order a side peanut butter and jelly sandwich.  It may be an Indiana thing, but if you have a bowl of chili, nothing is better than a PB&J sandwich to compliment it!  Dawson’s chili is flavorful, delicious, and I would recommend ordering it on top a hot dog or plate of nachos!
