La Scala – “Fresh Farm Food From Our Farm and Other Local Farms. Taste the Difference.”

LaScala three“Fresh Farm Food From Our Farm and Other Local Farms. Taste the Difference.” – is what you will see when you visit the La Scala website. And boy, is that accurate! I was absolutely impressed with how flavorful the salad I ordered at lunch was! The Fontina Fruit Salad was probably the best salad I have ever had! It was a massive portion for a lunch salad. It was a mound of greens piled high with apples, walnuts, grapes and Fontina cheese. The dressing was raspberry vinaigrette that was so refreshing! Oh, and I added grilled chicken to the salad which could not have been grilled more perfectly. Don’t even ask me how I finished that entire thing all by myself!

When you walk into La Scala you are greeted with a calm and relaxed environment. The servers are so sweet and fully knowledgeable of the menu. They have an answer for every question you could possibly have about the dishes. All of the main entrees come with a salad or soup to start with. I have to admit that I was very jealous watching my friend across the table eating her Tomato and Basil soup. The happiness on her face could not be recreated!

IMG_0439I have heard owner Kirsten talk to a group about her passion for her restaurant before. The love and care that her and her husband, Chef Francisco “Paco” Serrano, have for what they do is incredible. They started from the bottom and with their combined energy and devotion, the current La Scala is now what we have to enjoy. Lafayette is so lucky to have so many family businesses to enjoy, and La Scala is up there on the top of that list.

IMG_0431La Scala is open for lunch Monday through Friday from 11:00am until 2:00pm. Dinner on the weekdays, Monday through Thursday, is served from 5:00pm until 9:00pm. On Friday and Saturday nights La Scala serves dinner a little bit later from 5:00pm until 9:30pm. If you call or visit La Scala’s website, you can easily make a reservation. This is a simple way to ensure you can snag a table on a Friday night without having to wait. Sometimes La Scala is just too busy to be able to take all the walk ins on a weekend night!

I highly recommend eating your next meal out with La Scala. Don’t forget to bring your friends and family, along. Everyone will walk away with a smile on their face and a round full tummy!

Star City Coffee & Ale House

Star City Turkey Panini

Happening Now!  Ale and coffee; combined makes a powerful connection. Right now, the talk around town is about a new hip and fresh restaurant, Star City Coffee and Ale House, that just opened this past December serving fresh brewed coffee and local brews.  Visitors pick up a cup of java, as well as fresh muffins, cupcakes, panini pressed sandwiches and more.

What is better than starting the day off with a cup of coffee?  The answer could possibly be ending the day with a glass of espresso coffee beans ale.  Star City Coffee and Ale serves an “Agent Oats Coffee Stout” from People’s Brewing Company that is infused with their own espresso coffee beans.  I personally am not a big beer drinker, but add a little espresso, and it makes me happy!  I get more excited about their “Pourover“, which is a coffee brewed in their regular French press.  French pressed coffee is a savory in my life.  It is so smooth, refreshing, and awakening.

Lunchtime is the perfect time to head to Star City Coffee and Ale to order one of their five panini pressed grilled sandwiches with fresh fruit, and pita or sun chips.  The “Star City Turkey” is already one of my favorite sandwiches; it is filled with garden herb turkey, cream cheese, basil, tomato, smoked mozzarella and chives.  The panini grill toasts the bread to the perfect crispness, and the cheeses all melt and blend together with the turkey and herbs to create a delicious sandwich.  It is one of best panini’s I have ever eaten!

If you are in the mood for a sweet treat their cupcakes are amazing.  The hardest choice is choosing which flavor between chocolate buttercream, strawberry with strawberry icing and white chocolate, Italian cream with cherry and dark chocolate or strawberry cream cheese. (Please note these were the flavors they had on the day of my visit.)  A chocolate lover at heart, I could not pass up choosing the chocolate buttercream cupcake, which was moist, light and airy and had a decadent icing.  I was happily surprised to find extra icing in the middle of the cupcake!  The owner shared that a local lady from Battle Ground, Indiana, bakes these delicious treats and will soon be opening her own shop in Battle Ground.

Main Street Cheese & Wine

Happening Now! Right now everyone is talking about Main Street Cheese & Wine, a local restaurant serving soups and sandwiches made from home grown Indiana products.

I am a Hoosier!  I am proud to say I live in Indiana and the Midwest where people not only work hard, but are friendly and welcoming.  I love to support local attractions, restaurants and festivals.  Main Street Cheese & Wine not only is a local dining place, but most of their food products are made in Indiana.  I am a big fan of Fair Oaks Dairy cheeses, and the majority of their sandwiches have a slice or two.  The “heart” of main street sandwich can only be described as “grilled goodness”.  Cracked pepper turkey breast, Fair Oaks pepper havarti cheese, tomato and artichoke hearts are grilled and melted together.  The combination of all of these ingredients makes for a mouth watering experience.  Add in a cup of homemade soup that is made fresh every day, and the lunch is perfection.

The atmosphere in Main Street Cheese & Wine is so inviting.  The room is light and airy.  There are cupboards full of food items ranging from homemade noodles, cookies, jams and jellies, and more for sale.   As soon as I walk through the door I instantly feel comfortable.  It feels like going back in time with the stained glass windows, hardwood floors, and cafe chairs.  Also, the waitresses are always cheerful and greet you as soon as you walk in the door, which is refreshing.

(Note: Check out their wine slushies.  They are the perfect thing to drink to cool off during this hot, humid summer!)

What is your favorite sandwich at Main Street Cheese & Wine?  Do you enjoy their cold sandwiches such as their chicken walnut or garden turkey?  Or perhaps you are like me and crave their hot sandwiches from their Cuban to their BLT pita?

Whether you are looking for delicious dining, interesting attractions and shops, enticing events or home away from home lodging—a getaway to Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana, is sure to satisfy.  For more information about this restaurant and others in the area, visit our website at
