The Best Pumpkin Patches Near Purdue

The temperature is dropping, leaves are changing, and combines are in the field. It’s fall in Indiana, and with that comes a plethora of fun outdoor activities.

The season brings something for everyone — from football and tailgating to haunted houses and hay rides. For a lot of people, however, it wouldn’t be fall without a pumpkin on the doorstep.

If you’re one of these people (or you just enjoy fun fall activities), the pumpkin patches in the Lafayette/West Lafayette area have your back. Before going to the grocery store to buy your pumpkins this fall, check out this list of a few pumpkin patches in the area.

Wea Creek Orchard

Located just off of U.S. 231, Wea Creek is a family-owned orchard, market, and event venue in Lafayette, Indiana. The main pumpkin patch is about 6 acres and grows 70,000 pounds of pumpkins each year. There is also a smaller patch (1.5 acres) dedicated to growing pumpkins for children on school field trips. If you want to pick your pumpkin straight from the field, this is a good option. Prices are determined by pumpkin weight.

In addition to picking out your own pumpkins, you can find a variety of items, such as honey, apple cider, jelly, and candles, in the Orchard's market.

The Orchard’s market also has a variety of goods for sale.

Tractor rides to and from the patch are available on Saturdays and Sundays.

Kent’s Cucurbits

With a 17-acre pumpkin field, Kent’s Cucurbits has one of the largest selections in the area. In addition to traditional pumpkins, the patch also sell gourds, decorative squash, and white pumpkins. They are all pre-picked and cleaned for visitors. Prices range from $1-$8. If a nontraditional pumpkin is more your style, there is a great selection here in Brookston, Indiana.

Traditional pumpkins are grouped in rows according to size.

While these may not be the best carving pumpkins, they make great decorations or centerpieces.

In addition to the pumpkins, there is also a 4 acre corn maze.

Exploration Acres

Like Wea Creek, Exploration Acres visitors go into the patch to pick their pumpkins. Be aware that there is a fee to enter the patch, and pumpkin prices are determined by weight. Located between U.S. 52 and I-65, this was the busiest of the patches — but there was still plenty of room to search for the perfect pumpkin.

Wagons are available to bring back the pumpkins

In addition to the pumpkin patch, there are different games and food options.

The Great Pumpkin Patch at Congress Street Church

Visitors can shop for pumpkins, gourds, fall decorations, bake sale, mums and more! The Patch is handicap-accessible, pets are welcome, and picture-taking is encouraged. There is a fabulous area filled with hay bales, pumpkins and fall decorations that is great for selfies and family photos. Do not miss the bake sale, as they have the best pumpkin bread around!

Each patch offers something for everyone. Be sure to visit your favorite before the season ends.

Painting With a Twist – A Blast of Fun with Friends

Let me start this by saying: my art skills are sub-par, to say the least. I was a little worried when my coworker Emily and I decided to spend an evening at Painting with a Twist. But – spoiler alert – it was such a blast!

When you enter Painting with a Twist, you’re greeted by the most friendly and knowledgeable staff! We were given our canvases and aprons and led to our easels. The group of people with us was a pleasant and lively group, consisting of some newcomers and quite a few of experienced veterans. They welcomed me and Emily and encouraged us on what was sure to be an exciting journey!

The painting that we chose was a field of lavender. The class was led by Kara Hampton, who had actually designed the painting herself. Before we started we grabbed a glass of wine. The drink menu consists of beer, wine, and more! The prices were super affordable and the options were right up our alley. Pink Moscato, hello!

As the class began, I was still apprehensive that I would not be able to keep up with the rest of the painters. My fears were quickly put to an end when I realized how simple the step-by-step instructions would be. I really believe that anyone could follow each step which eventually creates the beautiful end result! Seriously, if I could, anyone can! There’s also staff available around the room to come and help you if you have any questions at all. It was a very comfortable and accepting environment, and I felt so welcomed.

To spice up the class, Painting with a Twist also has little games for everyone to play. We played a fun round of their very own version of “Hot Potato” with the other painters, though sadly neither Emily nor I won! While we were laughing at the antics of the game, I was thinking how fun a trip to Painting with a Twist would be for all kinds of different people. Date night, birthday parties, team building exercises, bachelorette parties, staff retreats; this place would be perfect for so many occasions. If you want to have fun time and bond with your fellow classmates, friends or family, Painting with a Twist is a fabulous option.

Our final products turned out so much better than expected. I even want to have mine framed and hang it up in my apartment! I’m so proud of my work and it didn’t feel like two hours had passed at all. Painting with a Twist made us enjoy an activity that we usually find very challenging. If fear is what is holding you back from visiting PWAT like it was for us, don’t let that stop you any longer! You are sure to love your experience and the masterpiece you create!

Here’s another cool thing about this place -they do private parties! If you want to throw a party for you and your loved ones, have a specific painting you’d like to do, or just want some privacy, they have a party room specially for these occasions! See their website for more information about their private party room. You can also check out all of the public classes on their online calendar here. There’s sure to be a fabulous choice for every group! After you take your class be sure to check in on their social media – Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and @pwatlafayettein on Snapchat! They’ll posts awesome and hilarious photos from your class and the group photo of everyone’s masterpiece.

Sweet Renovations at Greyhouse Coffee

Greyhouse Coffee is a spot loved by many Purdue students and visitors. Being one of the only local coffee shops around Purdue campus, this restaurant attracts long crowds and hungry students. After being closed for a short couple of months for major renovations, Greyhouse re-opened its doors in March of 2018.

I was able to check out the inside of Greyhouse for myself and it is truly stunning. They added more setting options, a brand new ordering station with a central location and a welcoming design. They still offer their classic lattes, teas and crepes but make sure to check then out in the coming weeks for the addition of gourmet donuts. My go-to drink at Greyhouse is the Masala Chai latte with almond milk. The caffeinated drink is a good alternative to drinking coffee, with spices like clove and cardamom that isn’t too sweet!

Greyhouse Coffee is conveniently located at 100 Northwestern Avenue, right on the corner of a multitude of restaurants in the West Lafayette area. Although they are known for their amazing coffee and lattes, they also offer a variety of tea options and smoothies. For food, they offer crepes, cakes, macaroons and gelato. They are known around campus for their variety of sweet and savory crepes, offering both regular and vegetarian options like the rooster crepe which is a local favorite!

During the warmer months, Greyhouse has outdoor seating. The renovation introduced some new indoor setting space as well to accommodate the students and guests who wish to study or sit and enjoy a drink on a chilly day. They are conveniently open from 7 AM and close at 12 AM; during some holidays, hours may change.

Make sure to stop on over and check out the new renovation for yourself! Purdue University Student and Visit Lafayette-West Lafayette Intern, Natalie, shares this blog.  For more information about Greyhouse Coffee and other coffee shops in our area, visit HomeOfPurdue.com.

Date Night at East End Grill

Looking for unique place to surprise your valentine this year? East End Grill is the ideal spot for you and your date. The exterior and interior decor are unlike any other Lafayette eatery. You’re sure to love the industrial and modern feel within this dining area. This local establishment gives off the big city vibe without the hustle and bustle.

East End Grill is the home to one of my favorite date night experiences. From the beginning to end everything was perfect. The hostess greeted my date and I in the most professional, timely, and welcoming manner. From the moment we sat down we received excellent service. The waiter was friendly and helpful when trying to chose what to eat. Everything about the environment inside the restaurant made the date even better. I enjoyed the Cubano sandwich which was full of flavor. Of course, I had to try some of my date’s shrimp and grits. They were comparable to a dish we had in New Orleans, and I would say they were actually better. This is one of those places you don’t want to leave, even when the meal is finished.

Enjoying the Cubano

Enjoying the Cubano

The menu is truly one of kind and full of original flavor. The menu combines a steakhouse feel with a nice bistro twist. The lunch menu contains a variety of sandwiches, soups, salads, and delicious entree choices. The dinner menu offers some of the best food options in the area such as filet mignon and delicious pasta. You are sure to find a meal you’ll love that will have you coming back for more.

I can’t forget to talk about the full service bar. The wine list is always expanding, offering amazing choices by the glass or bottle. East End Grill’s main focus is on craft beer. The mission is to choose the best lagers and ales around. The bar team has created a cocktail list of classic drinks and modern drink favorites. Whatever your eating or drinking needs are, East End Grill is sure to be able to fulfill them.

East End Grill- "Our Cuban"The restaurant opened it’s doors in May of 2016.  Owner, Scott Trzaskus made it his mission to make East End Grill a place for the community to gather and that is exactly what it is. East End Grill is a welcoming environment from the moment you walk in the door to the moment you leave.

National Cheeseburger Day – DT Kirby’s Calling!

The Cheeseburger may be the most famous American food symbol there is. Cheeseburgers are to Americans like Pasta is to Italians. The official beginning of the cheeseburger is unknown, but we do know the cheeseburger will always be an American favorite. You can experience the taste of the great American Cheeseburger right here in Lafayette, Indiana. National Cheeseburger Day is today, September 18th and what better way to celebrate than heading over to DT Kirby’s in Downtown Lafayette.

The Mac ‘N Nap

DT Kirby’s has a one of a kind menu you won’t be able to find anywhere else. The Mac ‘N Nap burger is my personal favorite. The Mac ‘N Nap is a burger with mac and cheese on a pretzel bun. This meal is the best option when you can’t decide between a mac and cheese meal or a nice juicy burger. The pretzel bun completes the whole burger. The Mac ‘N Nap is simply the best of both worlds. The Mac and Cheese piled on top of the thick and juicy burger is the kind of mess that you will be completely okay with. It’s an incredible tasting burger that gives cheeseburger a whole new meaning.

Prime Burger

So, what if you’re not a big burger person? DT Kirby’s offers much more than burgers. You can choose from a selection of sandwiches, salads, and their famous hot dogs. They also offer a full service bar. DT Kirby’s can cater to anyone’s eating (or drinking) needs.

A look at the bar

A look at the bar

DT Kirby’s offers a unique environment for their guests that keeps their regulars coming back time and time again. There are many “rules” at DT Kirby’s including no ketchup for your burgers and no take home boxes. Don’t try to ask for a knife, because at DT Kirby’s, they think real men don’t cut need to cut their burger in half. The rules are listed right there on the menu and some are posted throughout the store. If you’re looking for a sign upon arriving at DT Kirby’s, you won’t find one. At DT Kirby’s they believe their customers should be able to find them without a big sign out in front of the store. The restrooms even have a very different feel to them (I won’t spoil the surprise for you). In addition to all of that, If you’re a Chicago Cubs,

fan you’ll absolutely love the Cubs decor throughout DT Kirby’s.
