Lafayette’s Unknown Instagram Gems

Take a picture, it will last longer. Whether you’re Instagram famous all across the web or you just like to post some fun memories for your friends and family, the quaint and charming town of Lafayette has some photo ops you just can’t pass up. Get your cameras ready!

The Long Center for the Performing Arts

jesslongcenter

There is something special about taking pictures somewhere with such a deep rooted history. The Long Center for the Performing Arts has an authentic, vintage sign outside its doors that really captures how long the theater has been around. Since 1920, this theater has been home to so many different shows and spectacles, making it almost 100 years old! It was renamed in 1977 after Irving Long donated the theater to the city and named it after his father, Purdue alumnus Dennis H. Long. If you happen to stop by for a performance, you will get to see the inside for an even better experience.

The Lafayette Theater

jesslafftheater

Similar to the Long Center, the Lafayette Theater is very historical and a big part of Lafayette’s culture. The Fourth Avenue Amusement Company opened the Lafayette Theater on September 1, 1938. It was one of the first in Indiana to show moving pictures. If you like photography with a vintage feel, an old movie theater is the place to have a shoot. Take a scooter ride on over and get an action shot.

Murals

melaffgraff.png

There is a lot of creativity and expression in Lafayette’s public wall art. Not to mention, it makes for a great photo background. Sometimes having a busy, colorful background is unique and can make your picture really stand out. Lafayette has a ton of amazing murals and graffiti art around the city. Here is one of my favorites but there is plenty more. This picture’s location is directly across the Lafayette Theater on Main St. It’s an adventure to walk around and discover these hidden gems.

Graffiti Art and The Haywood Printing Company

The first graffiti art pictured can be found in an alley between Main and Columbia, off of 5th Street. The alley contains many different paintings. The second picture is a unique, old building that might not look like much to the untrained eye but it is the Haywood Printing Co., which was founded in 1826 and is one of the oldest businesses in the entire state of Indiana. The outside of it is covered in many different kinds of art and will give your photos a rustic appearance. It can be found on 300 N. Fifth St., Lafayette.

Pops of Color

jessscocacola.png

Coke or Pepsi? Nothing is more classic than Coca-Cola. This bright red background and classic logo is a picture opportunity you just can’t pass up. A bright color surrounded by duller colors just makes it stand out even more. This Coca-Cola sign was refurbished and restored in 2016. You can find it on 103 North Public Road, facing toward Simpson Street. Lafayette is full of walls of bright colors and art everywhere.

The Tippecanoe County Courthouse

jesscourt.png

I’ll see you in court. The architecture of the Tippecanoe County Courthouse is the perfect building to photograph with. Also, all the stairs make it easy to get all different angles and perspectives. The Tippecanoe County Courthouse was built in 1882 and honors many founders, such as John Purdue.

Hidden Treasures

Sometimes the best pictures are the candids at unexpected places you just happen to stumble upon. If you stumble upon Lafayette, bring your camera and say cheese!

Weekend Update: 41st Annual Keller Concerto Competition & Anything Goes

Weekend Update! Looking for a fun Indiana weekend getaway? Or do you live in this area and are looking for entertainment close by? Check out the endless possibilities for fun events happening this upcoming weekend in or near Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana.

The winners of the 41st Annual Keller Concerto Competition take the stage to share their extraordinary talent this Saturday, March 5 at the Long Center for the Performing Arts. Along with this exhibition of the finest young musicians in the area, the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra will offer up a performance of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony. You’ve heard this instantly recognizable masterwork in movies, cartoons, and television shows – now you can experience it live and in person!

The age-old tale of Boy-Meets-Girl and the complications which ensue intrigue every audience, and no musical puts it on stage better than ANYTHING GOES. This show, taking place at the Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette on March 4 and 5, is an amusing story wrapped around one of Cole Porter’s magical scores. Two versions of it are available for presentation. The 1962 version and the 1987 Beaumont version are each based on the same story. Both may be accompanied by a piano, a small instrumental combo or a full orchestra. The 1987 Beaumont version has twice as much dance music as the 1962 version, and the orchestration features a shipboard sound derived from the utility band and less-than-ideal acoustics on board. Terrific Cole Porter songs in both versions include It’s De-Lovely, Friendship, I Get A Kick Out Of You, All Through The Night, Anything Goes, You’re The Top and Blow, Gabriel, and Blow.

Weekend Update: Purdue Jazz Festival & Rainmaker

RainmakerWeekend Update! Looking for a fun Indiana weekend getaway? Or do you live in this area and are looking for entertainment close by? Check out the endless possibilities for fun events happening this upcoming weekend in or near Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana.

We are so excited! This weekend is Purdue Jazz Festival! Purdue University Bands & Orchestras will be featuring jazz ensembles all weekend long.  One special musical event taking place at Purdue Convocations is DIVA Jazz Orchestra on January 22.  This 15-woman big band is pushing traditional boundaries of jazz and swing to their outermost limits and “transcending boundaries of time and style” (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette). Led by drummer and music director Dr. Sherrie Maricle—who has kept a brisk pace for the New York City-based ensemble since it was founded in 1992—the DIVA Jazz Orchestra has held court everywhere from clubs to Carnegie Hall, dazzled international crowds in Paris, Rome, and Berlin, fired up audiences at Tanglewood and the Montreal Jazz Festival, and now makes a very special return engagement to the Purdue Jazz Festival. With its signature blend of musical genius and bold personalities, DIVA is inspiring a new generation of young, female jazz musicians and reconstituting Songbook standards—from a stunning half-time appropriation of “What the World Needs Now” to “76 Trombones,” spun out from a show tune into a showcase for smoking solos. With roaring sound, tight pockets, a sublime swing, and chops for days, the DIVA Jazz Orchestra lets its music do the talking.

Across the Wabash River, more arts abound in Lafayette. The Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette presents Rainmaker on January 22-24.  At the time of a paralyzing drought in the West you will discover a girl whose father and two brothers are worried as much about her potential future as an old maid as they are about their dying cattle. For the truth is, she is indeed a plain girl. The brothers try every possible scheme to marry her off, but without success. Nor is there any sign of relief from the dry heat, when suddenly from out of nowhere appears a picaresque, sweet-talking man with quite the sales pitch. Claiming to be a “rainmaker,” the man promises to bring rain, for $100. It’s a silly idea, but the rainmaker is so refreshing and persistent that the family finally consents, banging on big brass drums to rattle the sky. Meanwhile the rainmaker also turns his magic on the girl, and persuades her that she has a very real beauty of her own. She believes it, just as her father believes the fellow can actually bring rain. Rain does come, and so does love.

Weekend Update: The Cumbia All Stars & Betty’s Diner, The Musical

Cumbia All Star

Cumbia All Star

Weekend Update! Looking for a fun Indiana weekend getaway? Or do you live in this area and are looking for entertainment close by? Check out the endless possibilities for fun events happening this upcoming weekend in or near Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana.

Have you heard of the Cumbia? The Cumbia is a music genre popular throughout Latin America. The Cumbia causes dancers to rush to the dance floor nearly everywhere it is heard. With an infectious beat and beckoning vocals, the cumbia was born from a diverse collection of African, Spanish, and Central American Indian influences as it merged and morphed its way through the Caribbean and Central America in the late 1800s. As with any folkloric tradition, each nation infused its own identity into the cumbia sound. In 1960s and ’70s Peru, the “golden age” of cumbia distinctly evolved to embrace a wide swath of musical history and heritage—from colonial-era huaynodance to contemporary surf-rock with psychedelic flourishes. The Cumbia All Stars, a supergroup comprised of luminaries from Peru’s legendary cumbia bands, majestically resurrect the classics of their heyday and honor that legacy with innovative new compositions. And they are performing at Purdue in the Purdue Memorial Union ballrooms on Friday, September 25!  With a propulsive beat driven by sparkling guitars and bold percussion, these then-teenaged musicians planted the roots of their sound in Lima’s urban bustle and saw it spread to remote cities of the Amazonian Jungle. As the Cumbia All Stars, they’ve reunited to resurrect an important piece of Peru’s sonic soul, and their performance will have you moving all night on the Purdue Memorial Union Ballrooms’ big dance floor to their transfixing, transcendent grooves!

More musical entertainment takes place at Purdue this weekend! Betty’s Diner, The Musical with music & lyrics by Carrie Newcomer is being performed at the Carole and Gordon Mallett Theatre on Friday, September 25, Saturday, September 26 and Sunday, September 27. Betty’s Diner might be one of those diners along US 231 or any of those roads that pass through small towns in the Midwest. It’s a place that’s been there forever, a place that feels like home, a place where they remember that you like your coffee black and your eggs over easy. But the new highway is opening up and business is slowing down. Miranda puts a For Sale sign up in the window and a stranger by the name of Gabriel wanders in, and that’s where their story begins.

Weekend Update! Looking for a fun Indiana weekend getaway? Or do you live in this area and are looking for entertainment close by? Check out the endless possibilities for fun events happening this upcoming weekend in Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana.

This Friday, Saturday and Sunday enjoy the saga, The Children’s Hour, at the Civic Theatre of Lafayette. One of the great successes of the distinguished writer, Lillian Hellman, is this serious and adult play about two women who run a school for girls. After a malicious youngster starts a rumor about the two women, the rumor soon turns to scandal. As the young girl comes to understand the power she wields, she sticks by her story, which precipitates tragedy for the women. It is later discovered that the gossip was pure invention, but it is too late. Irreparable damage has been done. See how the story unfolds in this thrilling play.

Saxophone phenom, Chris Potter, is coming to Purdue Convocations this Friday! Potter has been a longstanding collaborator with a who’s who of jazz, including Herbie Hancock, Jim Hall, John Scofield, and Paul Motian, as well as multiple stellar Purdue engagements with both Dave Holland and the Mingus Big Band. He has appeared on over 100 albums as a sideman and 15 albums as a leader, but his recurring project, Chris Potter Underground, has emerged as particularly fertile and imaginative. Digging into the funk and jazz intersection, the Underground has become a place where Potter can explore the buoyancy of the groove but retain the dynamism of free jazz. Do not miss this night of jazz at its best!
