  1. Art Museum of Greater Lafayette
    1. Exhibit: Missed Photography: Photographs of Prophetstown by Laura Hale
      1. Exhibit March 1, 2019-June 2, 2019, Open Daily 11-4pm

Lauren Hale photography of The Farm at Prophetstown

      2. Laura Hale grew up in West Lafayette and spent many hours in the high school dark room, laying the groundwork for her love of photography. In 2016, she happened into the barn at The Farm at Prophetstown, coming face to face with a Hereford steer standing in the cold air. She took some photos of him and fell in love not only with photographing farm life, but Prophetstown State Park as well. Her approach to her photos is to look for things not usually noticed, taking time to wonder at the details of both farm life as well as the nature that surrounds it. Her photos are edited using just basic skills as she doesn’t want to over process the moment. It has to be a good photo to begin with in order to make it a better photo.
  2. Haan Museum of Indiana Art

World’s Fair Vase at the Haan Museum

    1. Exhibit: St. Louis World’s Fair: Celebrating 115 Years
      1. Exhibit: January 26-April 20, 2019, Wednesday – Saturday, 1-4pm
      2. Experience a small slice of the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair at the Haan Museum, as they celebrate the 115th anniversary of the Fair. The Colonial Revival mansion served as the Connecticut Building, and now houses major artifacts from the Fair. Three massive vases exhibited there by Weller Pottery, including a 7-foot vase that won a gold medal for the Arts, are always on display. You’ll also find works by T.C. Steele and Charles Conner that were chosen to hang in the Fine Arts Palace at the Fair. Featured paintings from the Indiana Building include works by William Forsyth, John Elwood Bundy and Frank Girardin. Other major Fair souvenirs in the exhibition include andirons, a mandolin, zither, accordion, telephone, a Majolica statue, a 1760 candle stand that was displayed in the building at the Fair, a blow gun, stereopticons, and a wide variety of smaller objects. The World’s Fair was where nations, states and companies showed off the very best products and technologies of the time. The Fair in St. Louis was the largest in history, covering 1200 acres.

Do not miss the last weekend to enjoy the Haan Mansion Museum of Art’s latest exhibit: On the Shoulders of Ancestors: the Art Of Willis Bing Davis. Willis “Bing” Davis grew up in a neighborhood where there was a sense of community, where everyone knew who you were, and where great role models made a positive impact on the lives of its residents. While embracing his African-American heritage and culture, Davis creates thought provoking artwork that interweaves native patterns and fabrics and gives a new voice to found objects. Ceramic Ancestral Spirit Vases, masks, paintings and many other ceramic pieces showcase the talent and versatility of this prolific artist. Through his art, he inspires the viewer to explore their human potential and greatness.

Beautiful Art & More at the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette Gift Shop

GreaterLafArtMus2013.22 Great Cities, 1 Great University, “One Great Art Destination”. Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana, is home to many creative and unique art galleries and one that stands out and shines is the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette. This museum not only has revolving exhibits throughout the year, but a gift shop that offers one of a kind gifts.

January in Indiana. What comes to your mind? I think snow, cold weather, indoors. I am always trying to think of fun, local activities that will get me to venture out of my nice, warm house! An afternoon visit to the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette is one of the places that tantalizes my need to journey out where I can admire lovely artwork and as a bonus, shop at their amazing gift shop! We have many March birthdays in my family, and a trip to the gift shop is the perfect location to find gifts that my family members will enjoy.

Art Museum of Greater Lafayette 2012.9JPGThe Art Museum of Greater Lafayette gift shop features works of art by over forty local artists. Jewelry, clothing, paintings, and housewares created by regional artists are for sale. When one walks into the gift shop their senses come alive as sunlight streams in through a wall full of windows highlighting all the great shopping finds. From colorful hand-painted vases to custom-made jewelry to photography of Indiana landscapes; it is impossible to leave without purchasing something!

Another aspect I love about going to the art museum is to enjoy the exhibit that is on display. Currently, the exhibit that is running through March 2, is Painting Indiana III: Heritage of Place. This exhibition features works created en plein aire, French for “out of doors” by members of IPAPA and is the third in a series of successful exhibit/book projects.  One hundred works by Indiana plein air painters are on display. The book featuring all the art projects is available for sale in the gift shop. This book is on my shopping list to give my aunt who loves art!

Holiday Shopping – Unique Finds at Something Special of Lafayette

Can you read braille? These necklaces read " Hello" (top) and "Lovely" (Bottom)

Can you read braille? These necklaces read ” Hello” (top) and “Lovely” (Bottom)

Happening Now! Right now, the talk around town is about holiday shopping and finding the perfect gift to give a loved one over the holiday season.  We are heading downtown to Something Special of Lafayette, where hand crafted jewelry, beautiful paintings, unique photography, and lotions/soaps can be admired and purchased!  A group of local artists who specialize in their own special artistic craft have come together to create Something Special.

Necklaces with emblazened photos....beautiful!

Necklaces with emblazened photos….beautiful!

Linda Elmore is one of the artists at Something Special and she is usually the person you will greet when arriving at this business.  She is one sweet woman who is so passionate about her art that it makes me envy her enthusiasm and magical ability to take a piece of glass and make it into something beautiful! There is one item on my Christmas list this year that is a must-have from Something Special. Linda makes these beautiful necklaces – a small glass pendant with a family photo emblazoned on it.  I am going to get two of these made for my mother and mother in-law for Christmas with a photo of our daughter who was born in July.  They are going to be ecstatic!

Encaustic work- Layers of beeswax--Isn't this absolutely beautiful! And only $195!

Encaustic work- Layers of beeswax–Isn’t this absolutely beautiful! And only $195!

Something Special doesn’t just offer creative glass pieces, but also, encaustic work (layers of beeswax- see photos to the left), photography and watercolor, oil and collage art. The gallery is filled with unique photos taken locally and from all over the world.  I have found that every person is different in the way we enjoy art.  Some of us love to fill our homes with artwork that is right in our own backyard where as others enjoy the beauty of faraway places.  Personally, I love it all!  In my own home, we have an oil-based painting of Paris that is the centerpiece of our living room and in another room we have photos of Mackey Arena and local Lafayette destinations.  It makes me appreciate where I live and to dream of traveling to romantic destinations.

During Third Fridays and other festivals and events downtown, Something Special usually hosts artistic demonstrations.  An example is during Dickens of Christmas, Jim Mailloux did a watercolors demonstration during the day.  Visitors could enjoy watching, talking and learning from him during this special event.

Artists’ Own – “headquarters” for artists

It’s a well-known gallery where local artists can showcase some of his or her favorite pieces for anyone to purchase. Featuring many different mediums and media for art lovers to enjoy, Artists’ Own is a hotpot of creative output. Pieces include (but are not limited to) drawings, painting, sculptures, photography, jewelry, furniture, fiber, textiles, glass, pottery and the list goes on! It’s like an exhibit, shop, and inspiration hub all rolled into one. The absolute-perfect-place to find local, hand-crafted works of art to fill your home with beauty or to find that unique one-of-a-kind-gift for that special someone.

Located at 518 Main Street, this artist cooperative is a truly irreplaceable artifact in the downtown area. Artists’ Own frequently holds events and they’ve always got plenty of new exhibits circulating. From now until November 30th the gallery is proudly home to the “Decomposed to Composed” exhibit featuring work by Andrea Wellnitz and
Temre Stanchfield. This exhibit beautifully invokes a feeling of rebirth and decay through various stages of plant life. An appropriate exhibit as we transition into these colder months, wouldn’t you say?
