Unforgettable Golf at Coyote Crossing

Coyote Crossing Golf Club offers an unforgettable golfing experience to players of all skill levels. This Hale Irwin designed golf course opened in 2000 and has garnered spectacular reviews, including a 4 ½ star rating from Golf Digest’s “Best Places to Play.” Offering breathtaking views of both open meadows and mature wooded areas, every hole presents a unique challenge.

Driving your golf cart up to the tee box on hole nine, my personal favorite, you see a heavily guarded fairway and realize you’re in for a fun challenging hole. Your tee shot appears daunting as you stare down a chute that has wooded area to your left and several more trees to your right. The window to squeeze your shot into the landing zone is very small to set-up the perfect approach shot. Many golfers will choose to lay-up here to play it safe, but I always end up going for it, even though it gets me in trouble more times than not. Once you get through the trees, you have scenic approach shot into a large green that is surrounded by large bunkers on every side, a pond to your left and the clubhouse in the background.

This championship course offers its own twist and turns on every hole to keep you on your toes. Once you get a taste of this challenging, yet rewarding golf course, you will be back for more.

Harrison Hills: A Hidden Gem You Can’t Miss!

Water Hole With Flag FarWe sat down to have a chat with Head Golf Professional, Michael W. Smith, about his golf course Harrison Hills. Harrison Hills is located in Attica, Indiana just outside of Tippecanoe County. This course is a hidden gem you won’t want to miss!

What are the course stats from the back tees (slope, rating, par and yardage)?

  • 6820 yards from the back tees
  • 72.6 rating/ 131 slope
  • Par 72

Can you provide our readers an overview of the golf course and property?

Harrison Hills Golf & Country Club has over 200 rolling acres of spectacular views on a 6820 yard championship golf course. This William Langford design has 18 holes of bent grass tees, fairways and greens that ensure you get a high quality golfing experience at a reasonable price. We have four sets of tee markers which allow for an enjoyable experience for all skill levels.  Known as the “Best kept secret in Indiana”, we are a must stop on your summer golf travel itinerary.

Water Hole w:sandWhat if someone was looking to golf in the area, why should they play your course?

We are known as the “Best kept secret in Indiana”, we are a must stop on your summer golf travel itinerary.

What tips or local knowledge would you provide to help them score better at your course?

Take a yardage book with you and play to the middle of the greens.

Any recent awards or what are you most proud of about the course?

We are continually ranked in the top 10 places to play in Indiana by Golfweek magazine.  I am most proud of the customer service that we provide to our customers and the positive feedback we get from them through reviews and compliments.

What is the signature, most talked about, or most photographed hole?

The signature hole on our course is the 15th hole.  There are two bunkers on both sides of the green that are 50 feet deep.  We have people hit shots from them to see if they can make it on the green (this is after they have already played the hole).

The most photographed hole/ area is 10 and 11.  With the oak groves and a small pond, this is a great photo op.

What Is your favorite hole? Why? Any tips to play It?

My favorite hole is the 195 yard par 3 #12.  Its probably the most beautiful spot on the course.  You hit form within an amphitheater of old oaks to a slightly uphill green.  The green is protected on the right by a 20 foot drop off and deep bunker and the left front is protected by a huge over-hanging oak.  If you make sure to take enough club to get past the trouble and find the green you will have a great chance of making a birdie.

DSC01757Who holds course record and what was their score?

Brooks Snyder – 64

Hit ’em Long and Keep Your Head Down – Battle Ground Golf Club

bg2Just north of Lafayette, nestled amongst the rolling hills and cornfields of Battle Ground, one discovers the Battle Ground Golf Club, a course well worth the short drive from Lafayette.  It is always in excellent condition, and playing it is one of the state’s best golf values.  BGCC was once owned by the Lafayette Country Club and is now open to the public.  It has maintained that Country Club feel of understated beauty and class.

Parking is plentiful and the practice range is close by and handy.  After your round of golf, you’ll find a bar and grill, and inside/outside seating upon which to watch others finish their round (with birdies and pars).

BattleGround2015Do you like wide fairways and forgiving greens?  If so, Battle Ground Golf Course is the place for you.  Please don’t misunderstand.  BGGC is a traditional course with all the challenges and opportunities you’ll find elsewhere.  But what makes this layout special, and makes you want to come back, again and again, is that you feel you have a chance to do well, and will keep coming back to prove it!

Golfers are greeted by mature trees, wide fairways, and forgiving blue grass rough.  Oh, did I mention water?  BGGC has some strategically located, and if one is not careful, you’ll find it off the tee box on three separate holes.  Be careful out there!

There are multiple tee boxes from which to choose, and the yardage is more than fair for each skill level.  Designers Bob Simmons and Tim Liddy, using bent grass throughout, did an excellent job in crafting a fair, yet challenging golf course.  You’ll enjoy the experience and want to return on a regular basis!

Hit ’em long and keep your head down.

Big Hitters: Take the Challenge at Pete Dye Designed Kampen Golf Course

fairway, bunkers, h2oThere are many reasons to visit the Greater Lafayette area, but for those of us who love to golf, one of the top reasons is to play the Pete Dye designed Kampen Course, located in the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex, on the edge of the Purdue University campus.   This four and one half star Golf Digest rated course has it all:  pro-shop, driving range, clubhouse, grill, rental clubs, ample parking, and oh so easy to get to.  In addition to the Golf Digest ranking, the Kampen Course is considered one of the top collegiate courses in the nation.  The Big 10 and the NCAA have held their Championships here in the past, and each time Kampen has lived up to it’s reputation as a challenging, yet fair golf course.

golferandclubhouseOnce you’ve played this Pete Dye course, you find that you’re anxious to play it again.  This is due to the widely held belief that the next time you play it, you’ll score much better.  Right.  That’s certainly what I tell myself, over and over again, especially after my sixth or seventh effort of the year.  What I’ve discovered; however, is that the course does not change after multiple plays.  What has to change is how one approaches and plays this links style layout.  What a concept!  I’ve learned to trust the yardage markers; to trust the roll of the ball along these beautiful fairways; and perhaps most important, to trust the ”risk-reward” formula that governs shot and club selection.  To do well on a Pete Dye designed course is a career highlight; to crash and burn for lack of patience, is to be welcomed into my world!

BunkersI’ve learned three things on this bent grass course:  #1 – golf balls ricochet off the Pete Dye Railroad ties, usually into the water or a bunker; #2 – waste areas, even though you may ground your club, are just as difficult to get out of as are fairway bunkers; and #3 – that there are few courses, anywhere, that are as beautiful, and as fun to play, as Kampen.  Period.

Kampen has five tee boxes to accommodate all skill levels and an abundance of yardage markers to assist in club selection.  Big hitters get to test their metal at just over 7400 yards, whereas the seniors, bless their hearts, take their best shot at just over 6000 yards.

Kampen Course - waterOne unique feature of this Kampen course is that all four par threes play over, or alongside, water.  Three other holes have water that impact your club and shot selection, one being a par four and two being long par fives.  BTW, the two par fives on the back have the Big Hitters looking at more than 600 years on each.  Hello Kampen!

coolpondholeshotWhen you come to play Kampen, give yourself a little extra time so you can tour Purdue University, a world renowned institution that is as serene and inviting as the golf course.  Keep your head down and keep hitting ’em long.

Today is SPRING!! Spring in Indiana means the snow is gone, the sun is out and golf season is here. Anyone feel like shouting halleluiah? We do! Let’s rejoice by grabbing our golf clubs and taking a swing at life by heading to one of our 162 holes of golf.

My husband, Marc, shares the best thing about spring is getting out on the course with his buddies for a friendly yet competitive game of golf. He said the local courses in Lafayette-West Lafayette are challenging yet diverse as they allow for beginners through advanced golfers. He would rate himself as an intermediate golfer and is happy playing at all of the courses. Many of the courses have a wide range of amenities from GPS systems in golf carts, PGA instruction, pro shops, driving ranges and banquet facilities.

Summertime Adventure in Lafayette-West Lafayette; Putt Putt, Disc Golf, Paintball and More!

Monster Mini Golf

Monster Mini Golf

It’s summertime in the Lafayette-West Lafayette area! School is out and campus is quite empty. Therefore, I’ve had to broaden my horizons and try new activities throughout this summer. I soon discovered that it’s extremely easy finding fun new things to do around the area. I have thoroughly been enjoying a variety of different endeavors and pushing myself out of my normal boundaries to experience all new things.

This summer has been a bit rainy; however, that doesn’t mean the fun has to end! Monster Mini Golf is where I usually head on those days where the rain never seems to cease. On my first trip there, I parked and thought to myself, “This building is so tiny. How could they possibly fit a miniature golf course in there?” However, I walked in to a big, lively area with welcoming employees. To my surprise, not only is there a decked out miniature golf course, but an arcade as well. One of my favorite features about the building is that the regular lights are all dimmed and you travel through the course with the assistance of black lights around every corner. Make sure you wear white or neon colors to glow throughout the whole facility! The course is full of fun obstacles and unique touches to make it one of a kind. As you stroll from hole to hole, you come face-to-face with monsters of all types but beware! There are surprises along the way. Although I really enjoy miniature golfing, my skills would make you think otherwise, but that’s OK! Monster Mini Golf understands the struggle and always gives the loser a free pass to come back and touch up on their putt-putt skills, which I greatly appreciate! Everyone ends up winning in the end. Another miniature golf course that I plan on hitting on a nice, sunny day is Precision Putt Plus to further sharpen up my skills.

Disc Golf!

Disc Golf!

One activity that is extremely new to me is disc golfing, but ever since I’ve discovered it, I have been wondering where its been my whole life?! Although it is yet another sport that I may not be the best at, it is so fun that it doesn’t even matter how well you play! One of my favorite things about disc golf is the scenery. All of the courses I have played on have been in beautiful, woodsy areas. Not only is it pretty, but the surroundings also add fun obstacles to it. However, I have thrown a disc or two into the middle of the woods or in ponds, but my lovely boyfriend is always kind enough to retrieve them for me. It is also deceivingly quite a workout, which is never a bad thing! I could use the exercise, and my favorite kind of exercise is the type where you don’t even realize you’re working out! After walking through trails and hills to get to each hole and throwing discs upon discs, your body will be getting a decent workout. My personal favorite course so far has been Murdock Park due to its landscape and friendly fellow disc golfers. However, its fun to add variety and add new challenges by playing at different parks around Lafayette such as Slayter Hill at Purdue, Faith Community Center, or Ross Hills Park.

An exploit I still have left to undergo is paint balling. As I mentioned before, I may not be the best at sports, but this is one where I feel as if I should train before heading in. Unlike the other activities, this one involves me getting hit by items. Clumsy, awkward, scaredy-cat me, needs to brace myself for such an exhilarating time. I’m very excited to take part in it, and I’m hoping it will toughen me up. I’ll be venturing to Arrows III & Tackle Too in the near future to push myself out of my comfort zone and make a fun summer memory.

It seems like sweet summertime is flying by so fast, so I plan to make the very best of it by trying new things and journeying to different places! It will be yet another unforgettable summer to add to the list. I encourage you to step outside of your normal activities and try something new. You never know what new hobby you may come across!
