Music Festival Weekend Update: Starry Night & Ouibache

Starry Night began fifteen years ago with a hundred people and has since grown to welcome 10,000+ students and community members each year! Don’t miss heading to the Starry Night Music & Arts Festival taking place this Saturday, September 29 at South Street and Northwestern Avenue in West Lafayette from 7pm to midnight. Starry Night is an annual street festival that features a unique blend of excellent music, a variety of merchants, interactive creativity, and delicious food. The festival is designed to bring the Purdue and Greater Lafayette communities together and seeks to promote awareness of Swipe Out Starvation, a campus organization concerned with the issue of hunger on a local and global scale. Featured musicians include Michigander, Mike Mains & The Branches, Ledges, Corey Kilgannon, The Bergamot, Joe Baughman, and Stay Outside. Starry Night is hosted by Purdue Christian Campus House (pcch.org) and Greyhouse Coffee & Supply Co. (greyhousecoffee.com) and is free to the public.

Join in the first ever Ouibache Music Festival this Friday, September 28 and Saturday, September 29 at the beautiful Tippecanoe County Amphitheater in West Lafayette, Indiana. Musicians from all over the world will gather to play tunes, share stories, and commune with one another. Stage shows will feature local, regional, national and international acts. Music, demonstrations, dancing and all sorts of fun will be going on throughout the festival. Jam sessions and workshops will be set up on the grounds so make sure to bring your instruments! The opportunity is yours for the taking. Come and embrace your musical roots in a beautiful outdoor setting. There is something for everyone. It’s about the music. It’s about passing on the traditions. It’s passion with a purpose.

Weekend Update: Street Art Paint Out & OUTfest

Fabulous fun is coming this Saturday, August 18! The Street Art Paint Out: Wabash Walls initiative started on August 4 and is concluding this Saturday with a Community Celebration from noon – 4 pm at the Junction House located at 215 Smith Street. (The Wabash Walls project is a collaborative effort that aims to engage the Wabash Avenue Neighborhood and build the community through the creation of public art pieces and offers the public a chance to get involved with community beautification efforts. Led by artist and curator Cameron Moberg, the festival has featured two weeks of painting with visiting and local artists.)

The Community Celebration is open to the public and will feature an official commemoration of the murals and interactive art activities. Community members can join muralist and curator, Cameron Moberg, in painting panels for a collaborative mural to be displayed at the Retaining Wall. The event will end with a Bike Tour and tour of the Wabash Walls, beginning at Cargill at 3 pm and ending at OUTfest downtown.

The afternoon and evening will feature live bands and DJs, local food vendors, information booths, beer gardens, a family area, dancing, light hearted drag entertainment, extended hours for some local downtown businesses, and much more! Looking for a relaxed and lovely way to spend a few hours of your day on Saturday, September 16? Head over to the Morton Community Center for the special event, Global Fest. This is a day of celebration as we embrace the many cultures in our community. It’s a friendly street festival with great music, global food samplings and crafts from around the world just waiting to be purchased.  Visit Lafayette-West Lafayette President Jo Wade shares, “Always a great event for a variety of international food and entertainment. Walking through the classrooms full of international products/gifts to be purchased is always a treat.” Admission is free.

Join in the festive fun during Beers Across the Wabash taking place from 3-7pm at the John T. Myers Pedestrian Bridge on Saturday, August 26. In addition to delicious ales & lagers and one of the finest beer festival settings in the Midwest, admission includes a commemorative sample cup along with homebrewing information and demonstrations from Tippecanoe Homebrewers Circle. On-site foodservice will also be available for purchase from D&R Catering, Smolder BBQ, Emergency Munchie Truck (EMT) and The Lafayette Optimist Club. (Must be 21 or older.)

The 39th Annual Wabash River Ride will be held on Saturday, August  from 7-5 p.m. Get out your bike for well organized and supported rides of 34, 47, 65 or 105 miles through some of the most beautiful parts of Tippecanoe, Fountain and Warren counties. Enjoy scenic vistas of the Wabash River and Big Pine Creek. There are great routes for riders of all levels, and it isn’t just corn fields you’ll be viewing! To fuel your ride, the Wabash River Cycle Club will have a wonderful selection of edibles available. They will continue their renowned tradition of home baked cookies from their club members, and have a delicious barbecue lunch planned for you when you finish the ride.

Come out for the annual Hot Summer Nights Cruise-in & Car Show hosted by Lafayette Kroozers. Friday, July 28 from 5-9pm, cruise-in your custom or hot rod for free, hang out and listen to good music. Saturday, come out for the free car show from 8am-3pm (register your ride at http://www.lafayettekroozers.com/Register.html), and also shop the sidewalk sales. There will be plenty to do for kids too! Balloon animals, face painting and giveaways!

This event features John Deere tractors, vintage tractors and equipment and gas engines. Activities include threshing, sawmill, shingle making, corn shelling and grinding, blacksmith, craft demonstrations, tractor games and a flea market. Don’t miss out on the garden tractor pull and fun musical entertainment!

This weekend, June 23-25, do not miss the 45th Annual Indiana Fiddlers’ Gathering, located on the grounds of the historical Tippecanoe Battlefield. This event is a celebration of traditional music, food, crafts and continuous activities.  Music lovers will have the chance to clap, stomp and enjoy the sounds of old-time, bluegrass, swing jazz fiddle, string band, Celtic and ethnic music.  This is an acoustic music festival that has featured some of the most famous musicians of our time! Performers in 2017 include the following: The Fretless, Bing Futch, Ken & Brad Kolodner, Charm City Junction, Cathy Barton & Dave Para, Spencer & Rains, Roger Netherton & Friends, Kountry Kernals, Bahler’s “Golden Age” Band, Tamara Loewentha and Mark Lyons.

Enjoy more music and entertainment this Saturday and Sunday at Haan Mansion during “Picnic on the Lawn” and “Theater in the Garden”. Bring a picnic and lawn chairs and come to the front lawn of the Haan Museum to listen to the music of Scott Greeson while the Civic Youth Theatre prepares to present their production of “Macbeth” by Shakespeare. The play is being presented in the Theater Garden behind the Museum following Scott’s musical performance.

TAP for TAF is an event highlighting the growing interest in craft beers and craft microbreweries. This special event takes place at the top floor of the 2nd Street Parking Garage in Downtown Lafayette on Saturday, April 8 Please note non-alcoholic beverages will also be available.

Families, couples, any and all, head to Purdue University for a day of science, agriculture, entomology and more at the annual event showcasing the lighter side of higher education; Spring Fest! This free event, taking place April 8 and 9, is a great opportunity to learn about animals, art, astronomy and much more in two full days of hands-on activities. It’s part education, part entertainment, and all fun! Make sure you head to the cricket spitting area…it is an activity you will never forget!

The “Boom” of the cannons, shake the ground. Herbed pork chops sizzle as they roast. Scents of delectable foods like rabbit and buffalo stew, slow cooked for hours over an open fire fill the air. Sweet, savory apple dumplings, are prepared before your eyes with the freshest ingredients. Drums keep a steady beat in the distance. Festival goers experience this and more  as they recapture 18th century life at the Feast of the Hunters’ Moon, along the banks of the Wabash River, in West Lafayette, Indiana.

The festival is a reenactment of the annual fall gathering during the mid 1700’s at Fort Ouiatenon,  a fur trading post between the French and Wea Tribe of Native Americans. Control of the Fort shifted between the French, Native Americans and British during its almost 100 years of use.

It’s spirited, brimming with family fun and rich with history and cultural experiences.
