All Fired Up

One great place to get unique gifts for your friends and family this year would definitely be at All Fired Up. At All Fired Up, they make the experience really simple so that even little kids or novice artists are able to create their own masterpieces. When you first walk in, you are greeted and the process is clearly explained to you. You then pick out the pre-made pottery piece that you want to paint. The great thing about All Fired Up is that they have so many options of pottery pieces to choose from. You have the opportunity to chose from mugs, bowls, plates, and so much more. Your special someone will love seeing the time you put into making something that is meant just for them.

If you know someone trendy and stylish, you’ll want to pop into Dawson & Daisy for the perfect holiday gift! They have candles, clothes, accessories, adorable home wares, and much more! Among the racks, they even have some of the cutest children’s clothes in their “Little Buds” section!

The University Book Store is one of the main places around that you can get your Purdue staples. There’s not just textbooks here! The Season of Giving is Here: Shop Local!

Interior Objects

Interior Objects

The season of giving is here! The older I get, the more I come to find that I much rather give to others versus receive.  Shopping for others with their happiness in mind and then seeing their surprised reaction to their presents is so very rewarding. This year, don’t travel far for the perfect presents! There are many options right here in Tippecanoe County.

Two Tulips

Two Tulips

For the young cuties in your life, head to Two Tulips for fun gifts. They have recently increased their product line to feature more young children’s clothes and accessories than ever before. Furthermore, they feature the Midwest’s largest collection of piggy banks! Head in and order a custom-made bank to add a personal flair to your gifts. Two Tulips also supplies customers with unique children’s products such as: blankets, backpacks, hooded towels, wooden furniture, and growth charts. Ask about ways you can personalize these items!

Hot House Market

Hot House Market

For the teenagers and young adults in your life, there is a perfect store for gifts of all sorts: Hot House Market! This local gem offers various vintage items for all. Vintage is the latest fad in all aspects of life. This shop offers clothing for men and women, classic shoes, lovely furniture, handmade home décor, bath accessories, record players with vinyl, and so much more! It is always a surprise going in, even on a weekly basis, as the owners are constantly turning over their supply in the store with fun, new items. Their products may be vintage, but they are at excellently priced and have big name brands such as: Coach, Levi’s, Gap, and more.

When shopping for mothers, grandmothers, and the lovely women in your life, there are two stores that stand out to me: Something Special and Grateful Heart Gallery & Gifts. Both of these locally owned art galleries and shops feature some of the most unique items in the area. From handcrafted home décor and art pieces to homemade jewelry, there is always something that is sure to overjoy your loved ones for the holidays. With so many options to pick from, the exquisite local women that manage and create artwork for these stores will be delighted to help you find the perfect gift for your friends and family!

Last but not least, you must shop for the men in your life. Personally, I think men are the hardest to shop for; however, they probably think the same about women. No worries though! I have a store I plan to shop at for all the men’s gifts this season: Interior Objects. When I say that this store has it all, it is no exaggeration. I could very well spend many hours in this store looking at all of the fun and unique products the store has to offer. Christmas time is my favorite season to go to Interior Objects due to their over-the-top seasonal decorations; it is extremely beautiful and enhances the festive spirit. For men, you will be able to find some of the most unique collegiate décor, which is excellent for those passionate Boilermaker fans out there! There is also a large supply of excellent kitchen accessories, home décor, local art, and much more. Are there too many great options to choose from? That’s OK, an indecisive shopper like myself runs into this situation often.

Something Special Custom Necklaces

Something Special Custom Necklaces

Purchase a gift certificate to allow your recipients to return and decide on the perfect gift themself! While you’re here, I suggest looking at the various stationary and cards. From funny to sentimental, come discover the numerous ways to send out Christmas cheer.

Not only is the season full of giving, but it is also packed with quality time spent with friends and family. One of my absolute favorite aspects about this time of year is decorating my place with festive décor to set the mood just right for special gatherings. To prepare for all of the holiday parties coming up, head to Design Nook for the latest trends in exterior and interior design. Design Nook employees go above and beyond and are available for assistance in your next home design project. Speak with professionals to discuss how to design your home like never before!

      • December 11 at 7pm- Purdue Bands & Orchestras Tuba Christmas: This holiday favorite concert is a must see! Continuing the tradition started by Harvey Phillips in 1974 to honor his teacher and mentor William Bell, who was born on Christmas Day, over 80 musicians will perform holiday favorites on low brass instruments. This concert is a campus-community partnership inviting low brass performers from the community to play alongside student musicians with euphoniums, sousaphones and of course, tubas. Don’t miss this unique holiday experience at Loeb Playhouse at Purdue University.
      • Following Tuba Christmas at 8pm, Purdue Bands and Orchestras showcase Holiday Cheer & All That Jazz! • The Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette presents the classic animated television special, A Charlie Brown Christmas, on December 11, 12 and 13.  This play comes to life in this faithful stage adaptation where Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the other Peanuts grapple with the real meaning of Christmas.
      • Fiona by the IslandLoad up the kids for an afternoon of fun on December 12 when Santa visits Wolf Park! Families are encouraged to come celebrate the holiday season with the wolves. Children are welcome to help staff and volunteers decorate small evergreen trees with wolf-edible treats such as hot dogs, spam, and spaghetti. When Santa arrives, the guests can watch the excitement of the wolves and children as the “edible trees” and other treats are distributed amongst the wolves. Although the program takes place outside (since the wolves are outside), guests are invited into their buildings to warm up, have some hot chocolate and, after the tree and treat distribution, talk to Santa, who will be accepting requests.
      • More weekend fun! On December 12 the Bach Chorale Singers present Let There Be Peace, a joyous concert of sacred and secular songs of the season with the resounding voices of the Prelude, Concert, and Youth Choirs, the Adult Chorale and special guests, the West Lafayette High School Chamber Singers. The following day, December 13, the Bach Chorale Singers host their annual Candlelight, Lessons and Carols. This beloved tradition for over 50 years, the Bach Chorale Singers Christmas Candlelight Concert unites heart, mind and spirit in word and song. Both events take place at First Baptist Church.
      • Santa invites kids and parents to join in a fun-filled morning on December 12 for Skate with Santa. Enjoy donuts, hot cocoa, and skate with the jolly old elf himself.  This will be a great photo opportunity, so make sure to bring your camera!

It’s a Magical Time at Purdue During the Holidays!

snowypurdue.elijahlouiswatermanbelltowerstudentsPurdue during the Christmas season is a magical time to visit campus…where you can enjoy the bite of cold in the air and the lovely, white snow. The snow also benefits one of Purdue’s oldest holiday traditions, which is going sledding at Slayter Hill. Every winter, Purdue students of every age meet up at Slayter Hill for the time of their lives. When the snow has fallen, Slayter Hill is the perfect place to go sledding.  Students grab their sleds to take a break from their studies to have some fun. For new Purdue freshmen, this is the perfect opportunity to get involved in an old Purdue tradition! Some of my favorite memories during my time at Purdue have been at Slayter Hill.

IMG_5321Once you’ve had enough fun and are ready to warm up from the cold, heading to LavAzza for some wonderful hot chocolate is the next step for your perfect day. LavAzza hot chocolate is different than any other type of hot chocolate because it is made with their special Italian drinking chocolate. The Italian drinking chocolate is delicious and makes the hot chocolate that much better. If you have never tried this drink before, or tried any of LavAzza’s other unique drinks, I highly recommend stopping by. It is located on Purdue’s campus in Marriott Hall. From personal experience, I know that the staff is extremely friendly and will do their best to brighten your day. The latte art they try to perfect is also very cool!

IMG_5349After you have warmed up from your hot beverage, the next thing you should do is head over to the Purdue Memorial Union. Every year, the Purdue Memorial Union takes its front doors off their hinges and spends an entire afternoon bringing in the Christmas tree. The Christmas tree is HUGE! It takes so many volunteers to help get this two story tall tree into the Union. People will stop by and watch the volunteers bring the tree into the Union and rave at its size. It is an all day effort. This year, the tree will be arriving on December 7th. The next night, the Purdue Student Union Board will gather around the tree and help decorate it. It is a truly magnificent experience. If you are on Purdue’s campus anytime during the holiday season, you should definitely stop and see the Christmas tree. It is beautiful and incredible to think about how much effort goes into getting the tree set up.

Another great holiday tradition that is put on by the Purdue Student Union Board is Breakfast with Santa. If you have young children, this is the perfect opportunity for your family. College students dress up as elves and interact with your children, craft stations are set up, breakfast is provided, and you can even get your picture taken with Santa! These are family memories that your children will hold onto for the rest of their lives.

If you love the holiday season, Purdue is a great place to be around Christmas time. If you’re new to the area, check out our online event calendar to see all the events that are taking place! Another great resource for holiday festivities is the Purdue Student Union Board website. Celebrate your holiday spirit at Purdue this year! We have so many opportunities and traditions you can participate in!
