Local Acts of Kindness Leave Mark on Purdue Family

Hannah and mom Rachel 1 week before Hannah became ill

Today is World Kindness Day! We want to share a story of loving kindness we heard from a Purdue parent who experienced the BEST of our community.  Thank you to Rachel Michelberg for sharing this story with us to pass on. It shows how the human spirit of kindness can leave a mark in a family’s life forever. Our world is brighter with these wonderful acts of kindness.

Rachel shares, “In November 2016 my daughter Hannah was in her sophomore year at Purdue.  She fell ill the weekend before Thanksgiving and was taken by a friend in the middle of the night to St. Elizabeth hospital. Her illness, which was thought to be either TB or pneumonia, progressed rapidly and the doctor advised me to come as soon as possible.  My husband and I flew out (from the San Francisco bay area) that night.  Hannah was in the ICU in an isolated room – we had to don gowns and masks upon entering.  She worsened and the doctors put her on a ventilator. As you can imagine it was truly terrifying – the antibiotics weren’t working and her lung x-rays continued to show worsening, severe congestion.  TB was eventually ruled out – she had a severe form of pneumonia.
The night Hannah went on the ventilator – the Wednesday before Thanksgiving — we took a break and went to East End Grill for dinner.  It was hard to relax but we told the server our story and asked if they were open the next day so we could have somewhere to go for Thanksgiving dinner.  Soon after Scott came to our table and offered to make us a meal that we could pick up and have in Hannah’s hospital room (he would be coming in to the restaurant to cook just for us since they weren’t open.) We were flabbergasted by his kindness and gratefully accepted.  When my husband Richard picked up the meal the next day, Scott refused his repeated offer of payment.  So extraordinarily kind and generous.

Thanksgiving Dinner – Chicken, asparagus and lovely mashed potatoes. Scott even sent plates and cutlery.

I helped Hannah move into her studio in The Hub this past weekend for her senior year.  I took her and a few of her friends to the East End Grill on Saturday night and asked to see Scott.  He remembered us, asking – “you’re here from California, right?” I thanked him again, and he said “it’s just what you do,” – as if there was no question that this is the way people should treat each other.”

The staff at Visit Lafayette-West Lafayette want to thank Scott at East End Grill as well for being kind and making us so proud to call Lafayette-West Lafayette home. Our community is positive, kind and a great place to be a part of. Living or visiting here, it’s fabulous!
Please share an act of kindness you have received? And remember, be kind!

Southern Flavors Delight at East End Grill

Walking down Main Street in historic downtown Lafayette you will come across many wonderful local businesses and restaurants but one that really stands out is the East End Grill. As it states in the name, it’s on the East End of Main Street between 10th and 11th Streets. As you walk by, you are welcomed by inviting outdoor seating and stately lanterns on the front of the building. As you enter, you see a large open area decorated with industrial, urban features. This is something you would expect to see in a larger city such as Chicago or Indianapolis. The owners really wanted something urban and modern but also something that was classic and would blend well with the block’s history. The buildings on that block date from the 1870’s after all.

The food here matches the atmosphere, with a more upscale feel than most places yet still casual. The owner has traveled across the U.S. but has spent most of his career in the South. Therefore, you will find, many of the dishes has a Southern flare, such as their famous Shrimp and Grits and another guest favorite, BBQ Ribs.

East End Grill Arancini Balls

While there, our group ordered a good mix of items. To start we tried a couple appetizers, the House Cut Fries and Arancini Balls. The tables at East End are designed to be a bit larger than usual with sharing in mind, which is exactly what we did with the appetizers (and of course we tried each other’s meals too, they were too good not to share!). The House Cut Fries were perfectly cooked, thin cut fries. Crisp on the outside and smooth and soft on the inside dusted with parmesan and herbs. The fries are served with a wonderful roasted garlic aioli dipping sauce, which in our opinion was so much better than ketchup. The Arancini Balls are lightly battered saffron risotto balls covered with house made Bolognese sauce and served over Pomodoro sauce. Again, it was crisp and crunchy on the outside yet smooth and creamy on the inside. We loved the flavor and the texture of these balls.

East End Grill Crabcake Salad

After the appetizers we were getting pretty full, yet we couldn’t resist the entrée items. We each had something different; the Crab Cake Salad, Shrimp and Grits and the East End Burger. The Crab Cake Salad was a large, meaty, flawlessly crisp lump crab cake served over field greens and corn salsa. The dressing is a Remoulade and Roasted Red Pepper Aioli, which was sweet and creamy. This dish was full of flavor and really made an otherwise boring salad, something exciting, fun and filling. The Shrimp and Grits was

delicious! I’m not a grits person at all and usually curl my lip at it, but my friend encouraged me to try this and I was very surprised. The flavor was amazing and the texture, which is usually what gets me, was silky and smooth. It does have a bit of a kick for my very wimpy palate, but I would even consider ordering it in the future. It was very cheesy and served with smoking goose tasso ham, roasted red peppers and green onions. My friend just calls it “yumminess!”. Now for the East End Burger. The presentation of this burger is fantastic. I had to pause a moment to figure out how I wanted to eat it as it was as tall if not taller than my hand turned on its side. The meat and other toppings were perfectly and evenly portioned. A huge slice of tomato and large chunky slice of sweet pickle topped Applewood smoked bacon, 8 ounces of prime beef, cheddar cheese and baby greens. The flavor was amazing, I couldn’t help but lick my lips to make sure I got every morsel of flavor after every bite.  We are told that the Wagyu Burger is even better than the regular East End Burger. While they were not offering the Wagyu Burger the day we were there, we are told it will be back on the menu very soon. We can’t wait to try that one as well.

East End Grill- East End Burger and Fries

We walked out of East End Grill fully satisfied and very pleased with our meal. We cannot wait to return and try some of the other offerings such as the Cutting Board, Wagyu Burger, Pan Roasted Salmon, East End Pastrami Cobb Salad and the BBQ Baby Back Pork Ribs, not to mention the dessert items! We were too full for dessert, but they sounded delicious!  There is a good variety of menu options for everyone, but they are also very open to working with special diets or religious beliefs that prohibit certain items. Those that like to make dining reservations can easily do so with East End Grill’s online reservation system powered by RESERVE, found on the homepage of their website or social media pages. I know I will be going back very soon! If you go, be sure to tell us what you loved!

Date Night at East End Grill

Looking for unique place to surprise your valentine this year? East End Grill is the ideal spot for you and your date. The exterior and interior decor are unlike any other Lafayette eatery. You’re sure to love the industrial and modern feel within this dining area. This local establishment gives off the big city vibe without the hustle and bustle.

East End Grill is the home to one of my favorite date night experiences. From the beginning to end everything was perfect. The hostess greeted my date and I in the most professional, timely, and welcoming manner. From the moment we sat down we received excellent service. The waiter was friendly and helpful when trying to chose what to eat. Everything about the environment inside the restaurant made the date even better. I enjoyed the Cubano sandwich which was full of flavor. Of course, I had to try some of my date’s shrimp and grits. They were comparable to a dish we had in New Orleans, and I would say they were actually better. This is one of those places you don’t want to leave, even when the meal is finished.

The menu is truly one of kind and full of original flavor. The menu combines a steakhouse feel with a nice bistro twist. The lunch menu contains a variety of sandwiches, soups, salads, and delicious entree choices. The dinner menu offers some of the best food options in the area such as filet mignon and delicious pasta. You are sure to find a meal you’ll love that will have you coming back for more.

I can’t forget to talk about the full service bar. The wine list is always expanding, offering amazing choices by the glass or bottle. East End Grill’s main focus is on craft beer. The mission is to choose the best lagers and ales around. The bar team has created a cocktail list of classic drinks and modern drink favorites. Whatever your eating or drinking needs are, East End Grill is sure to be able to fulfill them.

Whether you are looking for delicious dining, interesting attractions and shops, enticing events or home away from home lodging—a getaway to Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana is sure to satisfy. Right now the locals are talking about East End Grill, Lafayette’s newest restaurant serving modern with a twist fare ranging from chopped salads, to burgers & sandwiches and the best steaks and seafood available.

If you are looking for delicious food in a warm and inviting environment, East End Grill is the place for you. Since opening earlier this year, my family and I have visited this restaurant too many times to count. The food is just fabulous!

img_1013img_1007For lunch I highly recommend their cheeseburger and Caesar salad with their house cut fries as an appetizer.  The burger is an 8oz prime beef patty topped with crispy pancetta, smoked cheddar cheese, tomato, pickle and baby greens. The heirloom tomatoes that top the burgers are so fresh and juicy.  The house cut fries are one of the best I have ever eaten. The fries are sprinkled with spring herbs, truffle oil, and grana padano cheese. They come with a homemade dipping sauce that is perfection.

Steak and seafood is the main staple at this downtown Lafayette restaurant, and I suggest ordering their shrimp and grits and/or a juicy steak for dinner.  The shrimp and grits is filled with creamy cheddar grits, succulent shrimp, Smoking Goose tasso ham, roasted red peppers and green onions.  One item you MUST order is their Brussel sprouts.  Yes, that is correct, Brussel sprouts! They are cooked with their pancetta in some sort of glazed sauce that is to die for.  Truthfully, I like vegetables, but I am not one that usually orders them out. But this side dish is amazing.

img_1513Service and ambiance rock at East End Grill.  Not only is the food something to write home about, but the servers create a really special experience for the guests.  Ask about any item on the menu, and they will share the highlights of the dish.  The servers are welcoming with a friendly smile and really create a nice experience. There is a very urban feel to this restaurant, but new sound baffling has been added to calm the noise to a lower level. East End Grill also features a cozy bar and a private room that seats up to 20, perfect for entertaining business clients or special occasions with close friends.

Make sure you visit East End Grill on your next restaurant adventures in Lafayette-West Lafayette.  It will sure to be added to your favorites list!
