National Cheeseburger Day – DT Kirby’s Calling!

The Cheeseburger may be the most famous American food symbol there is. Cheeseburgers are to Americans like Pasta is to Italians. The official beginning of the cheeseburger is unknown, but we do know the cheeseburger will always be an American favorite. You can experience the taste of the great American Cheeseburger right here in Lafayette, Indiana. National Cheeseburger Day is today, September 18th and what better way to celebrate than heading over to DT Kirby’s in Downtown Lafayette.

The Mac ‘N Nap

DT Kirby’s has a one of a kind menu you won’t be able to find anywhere else. The Mac ‘N Nap burger is my personal favorite. The Mac ‘N Nap is a burger with mac and cheese on a pretzel bun. This meal is the best option when you can’t decide between a mac and cheese meal or a nice juicy burger. The pretzel bun completes the whole burger. The Mac ‘N Nap is simply the best of both worlds. The Mac and Cheese piled on top of the thick and juicy burger is the kind of mess that you will be completely okay with. It’s an incredible tasting burger that gives cheeseburger a whole new meaning.

So, what if you’re not a big burger person? DT Kirby’s offers much more than burgers. You can choose from a selection of sandwiches, salads, and their famous hot dogs. They also offer a full service bar. DT Kirby’s can cater to anyone’s eating (or drinking) needs.

A look at the bar

A look at the bar

DT Kirby’s offers a unique environment for their guests that keeps their regulars coming back time and time again. There are many “rules” at DT Kirby’s including no ketchup for your burgers and no take home boxes. Don’t try to ask for a knife, because at DT Kirby’s, they think real men don’t cut need to cut their burger in half. The rules are listed right there on the menu and some are posted throughout the store. If you’re looking for a sign upon arriving at DT Kirby’s, you won’t find one. At DT Kirby’s they believe their customers should be able to find them without a big sign out in front of the store. The restrooms even have a very different feel to them (I won’t spoil the surprise for you). In addition to all of that, If you’re a Chicago Cubs,

fan you’ll absolutely love the Cubs decor throughout DT Kirby’s.

Weekend Update: Three Stories High: A New Downtown Festival Concept

The Cardinals

Weekend Update! Looking for a fun Indiana weekend getaway? Or do you live in this area and are looking for entertainment close by? Check out the endless possibilities for fun events happening this upcoming weekend in Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana.

Three Stories High: A New Downtown Festival Concept is coming to Lafayette-West Lafayette this weekend, January 28- February 1. This collection of festival-length shows have shorter running times (60 to 90 minutes), so put on your coat, come on down, and see the shows all on one night, or see them on successive nights. Hit your favorite restaurants and pubs. Bring your friends. Join the scene! Check the Purdue Convocations website for specific details on location and times, but here’s some short details to spark your interests on the diverse array of shows being presented this weekend:

Ethan Lipton

Ethan Lipton

Ethan Lipton: No Place To Go! In No Place to Go, the OBIE award-winning playwright, actor, and singer Ethan Lipton, with his fine three-piece group, has created a comedic new cabaret theatre gem that mines the anxieties of the middle-class workplace, bagel carry-ins and all.

The Adventures of Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer – Seas have risen. Billions have died. Alvin Sputnik is our only hope for survival. In this highly imaginative fusion of puppetry, live-action performance, animation, and music, the tale of deep-sea explorer Alvin Sputnik is spun. Alvin plumbs the seemingly endless depths of the ocean—as both a last-ditch effort to save mankind and an impassioned search for his lost love. This quirky and uplifting, funny-yet-thought-provoking story explores love, loss, and heroism in a post-apocalyptic world—a stunning spin on Orpheus’s descent into the underworld to search for Eurydice and a remarkable pocket masterpiece of invention, staging, and performance.

The Cardinals – Three British Catholic Cardinals in crimson robes are on a mission of evangelism—touring with a puppet show of their own making that presents abbreviated, extrapolated readings of The Bible. At least that’s how it starts—in Genesis, of course— but the Cardinals’ stories eventually extend beyond the literal end of the New Testament to depict elements of contemporary history. As it turns out, this task calls for increasingly more skill and technique than they possess. Despite their naïve best intentions, only a dependence on their stage manager will get them through—a young, female, Muslim stage manager.

Gaby Couture: High Fashion, Couture, Alterations & Tailoring

IMG_36272 Great Cities, 1 Great University, “Midwest Hospitality”.  To experience “Midwest Hospitality” at its finest visit Gaby Couture, located downtown Lafayette, Indiana, at 529 Main Street. Gabriela Frezza, owner and tailor, has over 30 years of experience in the fashion industry. Her expertise on high fashion shows in her own signature collection called Gaby Couture, which was launched in early 2006.

I visited Gaby Couture recently and was very surprised at what I found! When I heard part of the name “Alterations and Tailoring”, I was picturing a walk-up counter where one drops off their clothing for repair. Instead, I found an eclectic boutique full of beautiful, custom made clothing, jewelry and accessories. The moment I walked in both Gabriela and her husband greeted me and they were so welcoming and friendly. The passion they share for fashion is exhilarating! I went in to check it out expecting to be out the door in a few minutes, and found myself talking and asking fashion questions for the next 30 minutes! Another surprise was the cost. A one of a kind outfit, in my opinion, was very reasonably priced.  IMG_3631Gabriella and her husband shared a bit of their story of creating fashion in New York City, and then moving to the Lafayette area in 1988. Each “Gaby” creation is created from her experiences as a child in Argentina and travels around South America, and stands out for its personality as well as its elegance. Check out the photos of all of her amazing designs.

Visit Sully’s – Vintage, Retro and Hip!

It's so bright and colorful at Sully's!

It’s so bright and colorful at Sully’s!

2 Great Cities, 1 Great University, “Hoosier Hospitality”.  To experience “Hoosier Hospitality” at its finest visit one of Lafayette’s newest storefronts, Sully’s! This new boutique (opened in 2012) showcases a diverse range of vintage and retro clothing, jewelry and accessories.

Sully’s has been open since 2012, but only recently did I make my first trip to this store. Shame on me because literally as soon as I entered the storefront the bright colors and beautiful clothing and jewelry lifted my spirits. I was instantly greeted by one of the owners who was so excited about her shop and the one of a kind finds within. From vintage dresses, men’s dress shoes from another era in time, timeless jewelry, and hats we saw movie stars like Doris Day wear 50 years ago can be found. (My favorite movie star of all time was Doris Day and her fashion should be acclaimed for it’s timeless beauty!)

IMG_3118To those who may feel uncomfortable wearing clothes someone else wore years ago, please know that all of the clothing has been cleaned and ironed/steamed. The owner was actually steaming some of the clothing as we spoke! Plus, isn’t it kind of neat to imagine what was going on 30 to 50 years ago when another person was wearing it? From civil rights movements to wars, that person experienced a different yet not so different life than we live now.  Nostalgia oh isn’t it wonderful!

The owner shared that she and her daughter own and manage the shop together. Family is very important to this business and I think it is great! They are very passionate about creating a unique store for our area.  Plus as I left, I was offered ginger snaps (and I am a sucker for sweets!).

There’s always room for one more @ Spurlock’s Restaurant & Pub!

photo-10Looking for a great burger, drink, onion rings and more?  Visitor Information Specialist, Marlene, shares thoughts on her visit(s) to this restaurant and pub.

Spurlock’s is located at 721 Main Street in downtown Lafayette. It is in the perfect location if you are walking around the downtown area and want to stop in for lunch, dinner, or just a drink. It’s a small restaurant/bar and it has good food and excellent service.  When you walk into Spurlock’s, it is welcoming. You are invited to choose a seat anywhere you like.

The menu has something for everyone including different flavors of wings, starters, salads, steaks, seafood, pasta, burgers, wraps, sandwiches, and soups. The fried cheese cubes with marinara are one of my favorites.

I love burgers with blue cheese, so needless to say I ordered the Ol’ Blue Burger with a side of handmade potatophoto-9 chips. We also ordered the Black & Gold burger with onion rings. The bartender mentioned that they have the best onion rings in town and I certainly agree.

The prices at Spurlock’s are very reasonable. We were able to have dinner for two for well under $20.  They have $5 daily specials Monday thru Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. They also have a full bar with a nice drink selection.
