Burger Trail! Don’t Be Nervous, Try the Purvis!

The Burger! We have ventured out around Lafayette-West Lafayette, tasted, explored and tried to conquer the mighty burger! Our last stop on this burger exploration is Triple XXX Family Restaurant, home to so many fabulous burgers. Their saying is “Don’t be nervous, try the Purvis,” and we took on this challenge. Here are our feelings about their unique burgers:

Duane Purvis All American

Emily truthfully was nervous, but guess what? She tried the Duane Purvis All American Burger! Here are her thoughts, “I am not a huge peanut butter fan and peanut butter on a burger has never sounded very appetizing. After trying it for the first time, I’m disappointed I didn’t try it sooner. I am so glad I ordered it and gave it a try. This burger was delicious and now I know why everyone loves it. It has the perfect amount of peanut butter on it and is jam packed with flavor. I will most definitely be ordering this burger again!”

“The Boilermaker Pete Burger is my favorite,” Ashley proclaims! “I prefer it without the grilled onions so it’s just a basic cheeseburger but it’s the perfect cheese burger. You can actually taste the cheese and the meat. The cheese gets into all the nooks and crannies of the burger and just meld together. The smoothness of the burger and cheese mixed with the toasted sesame seed bun makes for a tantalizing mixture of textures for your taste buds.”

Burger….

Corey shares, “The Bert Burger at Triple XXX is grilled and sizzled to perfection. Biting into the ¼ pound burger, you get mouthwatering crispy bacon, melted American cheese, a crunch of onion. I add my personal touch by adding spicy ketchup. The Bert Burger, along with a Triple XXX Root Beer of course, will leave any burger enthusiast craving for more.”

Bert Burger

I tried the Boudia, (Boe-Dye-Uh), a triple cheese sensation! American, Swiss & Philadelphia cream cheese, 2 slices of bacon, & tomato on a toasty sesame bun. Add in a 1/4lb. chop steak and you have the quintessential burger creation! I have tried many burger combinations at Triple XXX as my family has been visiting this local eatery for years. I have to say this is officially my new favorite burger Triple XXX serves. I love cheese and the 3-cheese combination is stringy, smooth and delicious. The chop steak is juicy and the bacon crisp and flavorful. As a bonus it is served with my favorite side, hash browns and gravy. Their hash browns are the best around. Perfectly cut and cooked! YUM! To those that enjoy eggs, our waitress recommended a fried egg as well to complement this burger.

Route 66 Diner Offers 1940’s & 50’s Dining and Food

oursideYou may be wondering, does Route 66 go through West Lafayette? What does it have to do with Indiana? The answer is no, it doesn’t go through West Lafayette and it has nothing to do with Indiana. Then why do we have a restaurant named after it? Well, Route 66 Diner and Triple XXX Family Restaurant have the same owners. They chose the name because Route 66, “the Mother Road” became official in 1926 and the Triple XXX Thirst Station in West Lafayette, opened in 1929. They wanted to stay with the same vintage feel for the second location.

IMG_3707[1]Route 66 has counter seats like Triple XXX but also have 40’s and 50’s style tables and is much more spacious than the X and can serve groups as large as 105 people. (Great for motorcoach groups!) They also accept credit cards, which is a plus for me as I hardly ever have cash!

IMG_0509Now for the most important part… the food! Route 66 serves the same food as Triple XXX but also offers great salads, soups and beer and wine as well.  If you go you must try their root beer, it’s some of the best ever and it’s served in a frosty mug! Besides the root beer, they are known for a couple different things, first if you are hungry for breakfast food, try the Drew Brees First Choice with Chicken Fried Steak. It’s two eggs, cooked to order, choice of either chicken fried steak or 1/3 lb. of their signature 100% ground sirloin, choice of fried potatoes or hash browns with sausage gravy and two grilled buttermilk biscuits. You won’t leave hungry that’s for sure! If you are more in the mood for a sandwich, try the Duane Purvis All-American (it was featured on Diner’s Drive In’s and Dives on the Food Network when they visited Triple XXX). IMG_0508The Purvis is a ¼ lb. of 100%, ground sirloin with thick, creamy peanut butter served on a toasted sesame seed bun with melted American Cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickle and onion. If peanut butter isn’t your thing, try the Boilermaker Pete, a third pound 100% ground sirloin served on a toasted sesame bun with two slices of melted American cheese and grilled onions. More of a white meat person? Try the Leroy Loin (their breaded tenderloin) or the grilled tenderloin both are fantastic! Be sure to leave room for dessert too! Their pies are all fabulous and if they have the root beer cake it is a must try! All the sundaes and of course the root beer float is amazing too!

A Purdue University Tradition – Triple XXX Root Beer

DSC00692Located halfway up Chauncey Hill, lies a Purdue University tradition. Triple XXX is one of the most historic landmark restaurants in the Lafayette-West Lafayette area. Founded in 1929, Triple XXX is known for their delicious root beer! If you head to their website, you can find the complete history of their root beer which is quite the story!

Opening at 5:30am everyday, you can come to Triple XXX and get one of the best breakfasts in town. It is one of the hardest decisions to choose what I want to eat each time I go! When you walk in, all you will see is one long turning countertop with bar stools to sit in. When it isn’t too crowded, which is rarely, you are welcome to find your own place to sit down. Most other times, you will have to be put on a waiting list to eat and wait outside. Don’t let this scare you away; they get people in and out of there extremely quickly.

IMG_4639The atmosphere at Triple XXX is casual and upbeat. The servers are all super sweet. First, you have to order their famous root beer. It comes served in an ice-cold mug. Next, you have to make the difficult decision of what to order. Since there are so many delicious choices, you’ll realize that you will have to come back again. One of the most famous items is the Duane Purvis All-American Burger. This is a thick burger with peanut butter and lots of other delicious toppings. Definitely a classic.

One thing you should know before you walk in to dine at Triple XXX is that they only take cash! However, there is an ATM inside just in case you forget.

DSC00696Triple XXX is a favorite for locals, Purdue students, and even the Food Network! It was featured on the show Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives hosted by Guy Fieri. Take home a 6 pack of their root beer with you when you leave for only $7.50. I promise, once you experience what Triple XXX has to offer, you will come back again and bring someone new with you!
