This weekend, commemorate the vibrant vibes of the 1940’s. Carnahan Hall Presents: The Big Swing Band on November 2nd. The event begins at 7:30pm, doors opening at 6:30pm! Do not miss out on this evening of excitement. This is a night of 1940’s swing music and dancing, along with some ballroom dances too! The Big Swing Band is gaining popularity in Indiana with its sound of classic swing music which captivated the nation from the 1930’s through the 1960’s. The players are professionals and highly skilled performers from various backgrounds. They play mostly standards from yesteryear recorded by such legends as Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin and Nat King Cole, with some more modern favorites by such artists as Billy Joel, Brian Setzer and the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies. The band also sports its own arsenal of original arrangements as well as a few original tunes.

 

Have you ever wondered what goes into starting an orchard, or thought about starting your own? Come join the experts at The Farm at Prophetstown State Park this Sunday, November 4th. Enjoy a talk about starting your heirloom orchard. Learn about heritage apple varieties and check out the plans for an heirloom orchard at The Farm. Admission to the Farm and this event is free with park admission. It runs from 1pm to 2pm. If you love nature or are interested in learning more about heirloom orchards, this is the place for you this weekend!

Weekend Update: Haan Mansion Plein Air Paint Out & LaffyCon!

Lafayette-West Lafayette Weekend Update! Looking for a fun Indiana weekend getaway? Or do you live in this area and are looking for entertainment close by? Check out the endless possibilities for fun events happening this upcoming weekend in or near Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana.

There are so many beautiful landscapes and sites in our community. Have you ever  just wanted to get a canvas and create a masterpiece modeled after one of them? You have that very chance this weekend! Join artists from across Indiana painting picturesque sites in the Lafayette area. At Haan Mansion’s Plein Air Paint Out, you can really see “TIppecanoe on Canvas”! You might find the artists painting at the Museum or downtown in the evening to capture unique nocturnal scenes.  These artists enjoy painting outdoors en plein air, as did Indiana’s most famous plein air painter, T.C. Steele.

Anyone can join in the fun!  Register and bring your paints and canvas to paint your own masterpieces.  Registered artists will be eligible for over $1500 in prizes.  First prize is $750.  Ribbons will be awarded for the best paintings by youth ages 17 and under.


Stop by the Museum for a map of historic sites and locations where you can find artists hard at work on their new masterpieces.  Artists will be painting on Thursday evening, from early morning to 5 p.m. on Friday, and until 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Get to the Museum early on Saturday to get your first choice at the Artists Exhibit and Sale.  Previously completed paintings will be available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Enjoy light refreshments, meet the artists, and have a chance to buy newly completed works directly from the artists from 3 to 5 p.m.  Help to recognize the winning paintings at the awards ceremony at 4:30 p.m.  Works submitted for judging will be available for purchase after the judging is complete. Did you know that Lafayette has its own Comic and Pop Culture Convention?! Also starting this Saturday, June 30th, is the 4th Annual LaffyCon! Join the fun at Carnahan Hall in Market Square. It runs Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.! LaffyCon features vendors, artists & guests to get your spider senses tingling.

This Friday, February 16, Carnahan Hall Presents: Brandy Clark band plus the Fergus Daly Band. Brandy Clark began her musical career as a songwriter in Nashville and her songs were covered by a number of country artists with great success. For example, the Band Perry had a #1 hit with “Better Dig Two”. Then in 2013 she released her own album of her songs “12 Stories” which earned a place in many best album of the year, including American Songwriter, Entertainment Weekly, Billboard and NPR. NPR music critic Ann Powers named the album her favorite of 2013. Powers noted that others share her sentiments, writing, “the top honor on many critics’ lists is going to Clark, a storyteller of the highest caliber.”

To celebrate the holiday, kids will explore the science behind their favorite candies at the “Love is Sweet” event. The Alpha Chi Sigma chemistry fraternity of Purdue University has teamed up with Imagination Station to answer questions such as, “why are gummies so springy, and what happens to chocolate when it melts in your mouth?”. Families are invited to explore through the hands-on activities. This sweet event will be on Saturday, February 17th from 10 -3pm.

IMG_0091This Friday, March 20, An all star comedy show comes to Lafayette-West Lafayette! Do not miss Indy All Stars: Live at Carnahan Hall! Dwight Simmons returns to Lafayette to headline this event! Dwight Simmons is a product of a diverse upbringing. This Indiana native has honed his comedy chops everywhere from small Midwest dives to large venues across the country. Currently living in New York, Dwight makes his rounds showcasing at comedy clubs and is becoming a staple of the New York comedy scene. Dwight is able to deliver a show that is clever, unique and smart; all without being hacky. His infectious personality shines from the stage as he energetically delivers his material through various voices and act-outs. Joe Fitzpatrick – INDYPROV & Rocketship Comedy, Leslie Dinsmore – Rocketship Comedy & Big Sky Comedy Festival and Gerry Gobel will also be performing.

Put on your party hat as the Bach Chorale Singers celebrate J.S. Bach’s birthday in grand style with cake, a champagne toast, and the “greatest hits” of the musical master! When and where you ask?! Head downtown Lafayette to the Lafayette Theater on Saturday, March 21 at 7:30pm to take part in this grand night. Enjoy a game of Bach trivia before the concert, hosted by the composer himself, and a unique multi-media concert experience. Join the fun as we honor Bach as a teacher, keyboard phenom, virtuoso violinist, and choral impresario.
