4 Unique Places for Holiday Shopping: Wabash Riverfront

All Fired Up

One great place to get unique gifts for your friends and family this year would definitely be at All Fired Up. At All Fired Up, they make the experience really simple so that even little kids or novice artists are able to create their own masterpieces. When you first walk in, you are greeted and the process is clearly explained to you. You then pick out the pre-made pottery piece that you want to paint. The great thing about All Fired Up is that they have so many options of pottery pieces to choose from. You have the opportunity to chose from mugs, bowls, plates, and so much more. Your special someone will love seeing the time you put into making something that is meant just for them.

Dawson and Daisy

If you know someone trendy and stylish, you’ll want to pop into Dawson & Daisy for the perfect holiday gift! They have candles, clothes, accessories, adorable home wares, and much more! Among the racks, they even have some of the cutest children’s clothes in their “Little Buds” section!

Chances are, when you are shopping for holiday gifts here, you will be tempted to purchase all kinds of things for yourself! The shop itself is located at the Wabash Landing, and one of my favorite parts about it is the great smell inside! It makes for a very positive shopping experience. Your stylish friends will absolutely love a present from Dawson & Daisy!

Not in the mood to embark on the Black Friday shopping madness of fun? Go local and shop this Saturday during Small Business Saturday. Lafayette-West Lafayette has so many unique, specialty shops that make this day full of shopping glamour. This day is one of my favorite days of the year because our local shop owners have their hand crafted items (many are one of a kind) on sale. My sister, mom, and mother in-law have been recipients of some lovely gifts that I can happily say I purchased at a great price! Plus, with the discounts, I usually purchase a little something for my own household!  For a complete list of shops that are participating, visit the Shop Small Saturday Facebook page.

Have a fabulous weekend of shopping!  And don’t forget to share with us your shopping news.  For a complete list of shops and other fun weekend events, visit www.HomeOfPurdue.com.

Happy Thanksgiving!  Holiday Weekend Update! Looking for a fun Indiana weekend getaway? Or do you live in this area and are looking for entertainment close by? Check out the endless possibilities for fun events happening this upcoming weekend in Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana.

Did you know there is one less week in between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year?  Which means one less week of shopping for Christmas!  With Black Friday and Small Business Saturday upon us, we recommend heading to the shops for some fabulous holiday shopping this weekend.  Truthfully, I have never hit the shops on Black Friday.  The shopping frenzy I hear from friends is a rush like one wouldn’t imagine.  But the crowds make me anxious, so the last few years I have opted to shop during Small Business Saturday.  The small shops are busy, but there is a laid-back feel that calms my shopping anxiety nerves!

Walnut Street Traditions

Walnut Street Traditions

Last year, I headed downtown with my Mom and Great Aunt on Small Business Saturday to shop at the eclectic, specialty shops and art galleries.  We enjoyed the crisp, cool air as we journeyed in between all the shops on Main Street from 5th Street north to 11th Street.  At Le Originals/Something Special I purchased handmade cake testers that have unique glass ornamental tops to put in family members’ stockings.  They were a huge hit!  I bought candles that smelled like gingerbread (Christmas wonderfulness!) for a few of my friends from Walnut Street Traditions.  I even bought an early birthday gift, a handcrafted ceramic vase, for my sister (whose birthday is in March!) from Grateful Heart Gallery.  Two Tulips has the most unique piggy banks, and I got a sports decorated piggy bank for a friend’s son that was recently born.  They even personalized it with his name!

Next we drove to West Lafayette to shop at one of our favorite boutiques, Gretel’s Fine Gifts.  I can always count on finding holiday gifts at this store and I was not disappointed!  I purchased a pretty, pink scarf for my mother in-law, a granite cutting board (for wine and cheese parties) for my mom, and I couldn’t resist purchasing the cutest reindeer decoration for our house!  Our last stop of the day was Route 66 where not only did we scarf down burgers, chili and shakes, but we each bought ourselves a purse from their vast array of accessories.  It was an awesome day!

Make sure you do not miss Small Business Saturday this Saturday, November 30 from 11 am to 6 pm.  For more information about these events and other special “happenings” in Lafayette-West Lafayette, check out our website at www.HomeOfPurdue.com

Black Friday & Midwest Hospitality!

Grateful Heart Gallery has a wide range of diverse artwork that would make the perfect holiday gift!

2 Great Cities, 1 Great University “Midwest Hospitality”.  To experience “Midwest Hospitality” at its finest visit our local shops today, November 23 (A.K.A. Black Friday)!  Many folks will head to the large department stores and malls which will test shoppers’ patience and resilience as they look for the best buy while dealing with large crowds.  My advice is to visit our local shops that feature great shopping deals and may be busy, but will cater to your specific needs and wants.

This past month I have featured many stories/blogs about our local shops.  I look back over my blogs and would name this month, “Shop til’ you drop all month long in Lafayette-West Lafayette“.  From a holiday shopping contest to a list of bazaars and local shops’ open houses that lead up to Black Friday and in one month Christmas, this month has been packed full of shopping fun!  I emphasize shopping at these local shops because our shop owners are so passionate about what they do and their products are diverse and many times “one of a kind”.

I have been out shopping downtown and throughout Lafayette-West Lafayette all month long, and there is one key component to why I love local shops; Midwest Hospitality.  Every shop I entered welcomed me and asked if I needed any assistance.  There was always a smile even if I didn’t buy anything.  A smile may be a small thing to some, but it goes a long way to making me happy!

Check out of these great photos of specialty items featured at our local shops.

What makes this Christmas tree special at Two Tulips?

You can find this little (is it an owl…ha!) at Lafayette’s newest shop, The Black Crow!

We are proud of our local businesses who provides gracious and friendly service. For more information about these shops and other fun activities in the area, visit our website at www.HomeOfPurdue.com.

Happy Thanksgiving! Weekend Update

Purdue Vs. IU (Boiler Up!)

Happy Thanksgiving!  We hope everyone has a joyous Thanksgiving tomorrow, November 22, 2012. Thanksgiving in our country means a lot of things to different people, but in overall it is a day of sharing and being with friends and family.  What do you do on Thanksgiving?  What does this special holiday mean to you and your family?

Thanksgiving in our family is really four days (Thursday through Sunday) of celebrating family, food and football.  On Thursday, we gather and eat a scrumptious Thanksgiving Feast with all the trimmings; turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry salad, yams, stuffing and pumpkin pie.  It is a day of merriment as our family catches up on major events that took place in our lives this past year, while NFL football plays in the background as a few cousins hoot and holler for their teams.

Black Friday starts at midnight and a few of our dedicated family members head out to take on the masses to find the perfect Christmas gift.  This year I believe Tippecanoe Mall, Target, Walmart, and the shops at Lafayette Pavilions are on the agenda.  Yes, there is a set “agenda” in place to where all the special discounts can be found.  I give “kudos” to those cousins who brave the crowds!

One of the best parts about Thanksgiving weekend is every other year our Purdue Boilermaker Football Team takes on IU at Ross Ade Stadium.  This Friday, November 23, we will join all the Boilermaker fans at the “Boiler Up at the Boiler Bridge Walk” cheer on our football team as they cross the John T. Myers Pedestrian Bridge lead by “special marshals”, a Purdue pep band, Purdue Pete, Purdue cheerleaders, and the Boilermaker Special.

Saturday, November 24, equals game day!  The day will start early with tailgating fun; a grill full of smoked savory treats, a cornhole tournament, and a pep rally and concert by the “All-American” Marching Band.  Then it is the official football “kickoff” and our Purdue Boilermakers will fight to beat the Hoosiers.

Thanksgiving is the busiest travel holiday in the United States, and people will be driving and flying to see loved ones.  Please feel free to stop by our Visitors Center on Sunday, November 24, to rest and get travel brochures and directions.  (Personally, we will recoup on Sunday after three days of constant activity.) Have a safe and fun Thanksgiving!

Black Friday

Black Friday.  It is a pretty strong word to those who know what it is.  It is a shopping day some people look forward to and plan for each year, while others make it a day they stay as far away as possible from retails stores!  It is a day where folks can get amazing retail prices from everything from electronics to the most popular children toys.
Thousands of people storm (another strong word, but don’t you agree it totally fits!) the stores to purchase holiday gifts at great prices.  It can be chaotic, busy and all-consuming, but the wonderful part about shopping in Lafayette-West Lafayette is our Midwest Hospitality!
We are proud of our businesses that provide gracious and friendly service.  On a day such as this, people get anxious and excited for their purchases and lines may be long with the number of people shopping.  But when the shoppers reach the register and there is a smiling face greeting them, it makes the day worth it.  And to top it off, the purchase savings are incredible!
Lafayette-West Lafayette has a number of retail stores offering amazing deals this day after Thanksgiving.  Check out our super stores, downtown shopping area, and malls and plazas.  There are amazing deals to be had….don’t miss out!
