Painting With a Twist – A Blast of Fun with Friends

Let me start this by saying: my art skills are sub-par, to say the least. I was a little worried when my coworker Emily and I decided to spend an evening at Painting with a Twist. But – spoiler alert – it was such a blast!

When you enter Painting with a Twist, you’re greeted by the most friendly and knowledgeable staff! We were given our canvases and aprons and led to our easels. The group of people with us was a pleasant and lively group, consisting of some newcomers and quite a few of experienced veterans. They welcomed me and Emily and encouraged us on what was sure to be an exciting journey!

The painting that we chose was a field of lavender. The class was led by Kara Hampton, who had actually designed the painting herself. Before we started we grabbed a glass of wine. The drink menu consists of beer, wine, and more! The prices were super affordable and the options were right up our alley. Pink Moscato, hello!

As the class began, I was still apprehensive that I would not be able to keep up with the rest of the painters. My fears were quickly put to an end when I realized how simple the step-by-step instructions would be. I really believe that anyone could follow each step which eventually creates the beautiful end result! Seriously, if I could, anyone can! There’s also staff available around the room to come and help you if you have any questions at all. It was a very comfortable and accepting environment, and I felt so welcomed.

To spice up the class, Painting with a Twist also has little games for everyone to play. We played a fun round of their very own version of “Hot Potato” with the other painters, though sadly neither Emily nor I won! While we were laughing at the antics of the game, I was thinking how fun a trip to Painting with a Twist would be for all kinds of different people. Date night, birthday parties, team building exercises, bachelorette parties, staff retreats; this place would be perfect for so many occasions. If you want to have fun time and bond with your fellow classmates, friends or family, Painting with a Twist is a fabulous option.

Our final products turned out so much better than expected. I even want to have mine framed and hang it up in my apartment! I’m so proud of my work and it didn’t feel like two hours had passed at all. Painting with a Twist made us enjoy an activity that we usually find very challenging. If fear is what is holding you back from visiting PWAT like it was for us, don’t let that stop you any longer! You are sure to love your experience and the masterpiece you create!

Here’s another cool thing about this place -they do private parties! If you want to throw a party for you and your loved ones, have a specific painting you’d like to do, or just want some privacy, they have a party room specially for these occasions! See their website for more information about their private party room. You can also check out all of the public classes on their online calendar here. There’s sure to be a fabulous choice for every group! After you take your class be sure to check in on their social media – Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and @pwatlafayettein on Snapchat! They’ll posts awesome and hilarious photos from your class and the group photo of everyone’s masterpiece.

Goat Cheese Fritters

There are so many wonderful menu items at Nine Irish Brothers that it is hard for me to share only a few that I recommend.  But if I had to pick my ultimate favorites I would suggest their Goat Cheese Fritters as my appetizer pick. Four generous fritters deep-fried to a golden brown, served on a bed of field greens with a light drizzle of raspberry vinaigrette. Definitely share this appetizer, as it is really rich!! Now onto the main dish. If you are at an Irish restaurant, traditional Irish food is a must. With this said, you cannot go wrong with ordering Baby Jer’s Guinness Stew, a hearty portion of their homemade stew, featuring slow-simmered Angus beef pot roast, vegetables, and a hint of Guinness Irish Stout broth, topped with champ mashed potatoes. Save room for dessert! Embark on Judy’s Irish Whiskey Creme Brulee, a delectable creme brulee wrapped in warm cinnamon-bun bread, with a light drizzle of our sweet Irish whiskey sauce. Delicious!

This past summer, two of our closest friends got married at Purdue University.  They had their rehearsal dinner at Nine Irish Brothers.  It was such a fun, yet relaxing atmosphere.  The Irish food was hearty, the beer was dark and rich, and the music was uplifting.  It was an evening where people came together to celebrate the joining of two lives in a positive, enjoyable environment.  And to top off the evening, the wait-service was great!  (I always say, the food can be exceptional, but if it is served with a frown then it makes the taste below par.)

NCAA Final 4 at Lafayette Brewing Co.

Lafayette Brewing Company- OutsideHappening Now!  Right now the locals are talking about Lafayette Brewing Company, where diners can drink world-class, brewed ale while sitting back and watching their favorite teams compete.

The NCAA Final 4 competition is taking place this weekend and fans are ready to cheer and holler as 4 teams fiercely battle to take home the 2014 NCAA Tournament trophy.  We are all ready to see who wins and how well each of us does in our personal bracket competition. Four years ago, (and you may think I am crazy, my husband thought I was), I choose Butler versus Purdue as my final 2 teams.  I am an Indiana girl, through and through, and I always choose Indiana teams.  Sadly, Purdue did not make it to the final round, but Butler did!  And I got 2nd place out of 30 competitors!  I can always count on my Hoosier state basketball!

This year, sadly no Indiana teams are in the competition, but we are still excited to watch this annual event.  Lafayette Brewing Company is the perfect place, not only to watch, but also to eat delicious food and drink fresh handcrafted ales brewed in the Old World tradition. Their ales are produced from only the finest malted barley, generous amounts of fresh hops, water and specially selected ale yeasts. They complement their menu that encompasses pub food at its best.  From their Bavarian beer nuggets, cheddar ale soup (a house specialty), Armenian chicken pita, bison burger (made from Indiana-raised, grass-fed, organic American bison), there is not a pub selection to be missed.

SONY DSCAs my husband would say, “Beer in hand, burger in the other, and college basketball on a big flat screen TV, how could life be any better!”  Lafayette Brewing Company is the place where life is at its best.  The atmosphere is fun and laid back.  The servers are friendly and upbeat.  I recommend going here for more than just sporting events.  They have great musical artists and comics that perform all year long, along with pool tables, foosball and darts.

There’s always room for one more @ Spurlock’s Restaurant & Pub!

photo-10Looking for a great burger, drink, onion rings and more?  Visitor Information Specialist, Marlene, shares thoughts on her visit(s) to this restaurant and pub.

Spurlock’s is located at 721 Main Street in downtown Lafayette. It is in the perfect location if you are walking around the downtown area and want to stop in for lunch, dinner, or just a drink. It’s a small restaurant/bar and it has good food and excellent service.  When you walk into Spurlock’s, it is welcoming. You are invited to choose a seat anywhere you like.

The menu has something for everyone including different flavors of wings, starters, salads, steaks, seafood, pasta, burgers, wraps, sandwiches, and soups. The fried cheese cubes with marinara are one of my favorites.

I love burgers with blue cheese, so needless to say I ordered the Ol’ Blue Burger with a side of handmade potatophoto-9 chips. We also ordered the Black & Gold burger with onion rings. The bartender mentioned that they have the best onion rings in town and I certainly agree.

The prices at Spurlock’s are very reasonable. We were able to have dinner for two for well under $20.  They have $5 daily specials Monday thru Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. They also have a full bar with a nice drink selection.

Chumley’s – Football & Food Madness!

IMG_0731Happening Now!  Right now, the talk around town is about spending an afternoon or evening with friends cheering on our Purdue football team and/or Indianapolis Colts at Chumley’s Pub in Lafayette, Indiana, while snacking on loaded nachos and burgers!

I am so excited for this upcoming weekend!  My husband’s best guy friends from college and their wives or girlfriends are coming for the weekend.  They are traveling from all over the Midwest to spend the weekend with us and to tailgate and attend the Purdue football game against the Northern Illinois Huskies on Saturday.  They will all arrive Friday evening, and to follow tradition, we will all head to Chumley’s to eat pub food, catch up on everything new going on in each other’s lives, and watch sports.

IMG_1452Chumley’s holds a special place in my heart because it was the location where I met all my husband’s friends.  It was a great place to relax and get to know everyone, and I have come to truly love all his college buddies.  Chumley’s also has great food!  My husband and I go loco over their nachos.  We get them loaded and ask for double the amount of the cheese.  The only critical part is deciding if we want chili or chicken nachos.  Both are fabulous!

Burgers and beers are another part of Chumley’s that make it a “hot spot” in Lafayette!  With a selection of over 25 burgers, 50 beers on tap and 100 beers bottled, guests have many options to choose from.  Our friends like to think of themselves as “beer” aficionados, and they always try diverse beers that personally I have never heard of (but I am a beer novice!).  I know if they lived here they would join the Chumley’s Pub Passport Club, where visitors can sample 50 different beers from around the world and earn a Beer Club t-shirt and their name behind the bar.  They may have actually done this in college. I will have to ask this weekend!

Black Sparrow – Think Fall

Fall may be fast approaching but you can still feel pretty chilled without risking a touch of frostbite. One of Lafayette’s hippest bars, The Black Sparrow, has an atmosphere to match this pretty chill season. The combination of Bohemian culture and carefree attitude makes The Black Sparrow a bar unlike any other in Lafayette. Established in 2007 this bar & restaurant has been serving up classic drinks and grub with their own unconventional twist.
beef burger

Approach a smooth slab of stone (a.k.a. the bar) and order a drink while you admire the hanging chandelier and lanterns that alight this scene. If you search your surroundings long enough you’ll find fun art, like a finger poking out from behind the bar! After you’ve admired your surroundings we suggest starting your dining experience with a unique appetizer like hummus or goat cheese!  When you’re ready, sink your incisors into a beef burger smothered in white cheddar and loaded with caramelized and fried onions. Not feeling quite so carnivorous? Try a fresh salad or flavorful pizza with a refreshing cocktail.  Bottled beer and wine are also available for your pleasure. Stop by for a quick bite or bring the whole gang on your next bar crawl. This bar has an authentic style that is sure to suit your needs.

Walt’s Other Pub

2 Great Cities, 1 Great University; “Midwest Hospitality”.  To experience “Midwest Hospitality” at its finest visit Walt’s Other Pub in Lafayette, Indiana.  This restaurant offers friendly, laid-back service in a relaxed setting for families and friends to enjoy  a delicious lunch or dinner.  Recently, Walt’s Other Pub has relocated from their original location across the street and within its brand new building a setting has been created to really invite their guests to feel comfortable and welcomed.

Since I moved back to the area 3 years ago, I have heard rave reviews about Walt’s Other Pub.  Co-workers, family and friends have all shared how wonderful the food and service is.  It has been on my list of restaurants to try and this past week I had the opportunity.  My mom and I were having a “ladies day out” and we thought this would be the  perfect opportunity to eat at here.

My first impression of the restaurant was “big”.  We walked in and a huge room with a monstrous fireplace fills the space.  Opposite this room (that is divided by a half stone wall) is a lovely, long bar area that spans half of the building.  And this is only one third of the space.  There is an upstairs area for dining along with an outdoor area in the warmer months.  The space is huge, which could be overwhelming.  Instead, with the warm decor, lovely stone fireplace, and high ceilings, it feels very homey.

The best part about my experience at Walt’s Other Pub was the service.  Immediately upon entering, we were greeted with a smile and taken directly to a table.  A waitress was at our table within a minute (literally!) and she shared the lunch specials and took our drink orders.   Throughout our whole meal she checked up on us to make sure everything was to our satisfaction, which it was.  Overall, I have to express the service at Walt’s Other Pub is superb!

Loaded Potato Bites

I can’t miss talking about the food!  We were there for lunch so we decided to make it an “appetizer” feast and share.  My mom, who has been to Walt’s Other Pub before, recommended their chicken quesadilla.  It is not on their menu, but they made it for us (again, great customer service!).  It was a whole wheat fajita filled with grilled, juicy chicken, shredded cheese, fresh tomatoes and served with sour cream and salsa.  To compliment the meal, we ordered their loaded potato bites.  They take everything (cheese, potato, smoked bacon, and chives) inside a loaded potato skin, roll it all together and deep fry it.  Out comes a potato bite filled with deliciousness.  Dip it in ranch and it is perfection!  We had a great meal, wonderful service, and a fun lunch!

Living in Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana, one thing we value is customer service and appreciating the times we receive great customer care.  Midwest Hospitality is Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana.  We are proud of our local businesses, including Walt’s Other Pub, who provides gracious and friendly service. Scotty’s Brewhouse

Mo'Fo Cluck Lite with Mac n' Cheese!

2 Great Cities, 1 Great University “Midwest Hospitality”.  To experience “Midwest Hospitality” at its finest, visit Scotty’s Brewhouse for not only fabulous service, but delicious bar food!

Scotty’s Brewhouse holds many special memories in my heart.  I am a graduate of Ball State University, and Scotty’s original restaurant first opened in Muncie, Indiana.  This restaurant/bar was where I met up with friends to hang out, had my first beer, and would take my parents to dine when they visited.  My favorite memory is meeting up with my sister (who is 3 years older and was a senior when I was a freshman) and her friends and listening to their college tales of fun!  Scotty’s is so laid back and relaxing that this location holds the perfect combination of good food and atmosphere to make the night a fun one.

When I moved to the Lafayette-West Lafayette area a few years ago, I was so excited West Lafayette claims its own Scotty’s Brewhouse!  I would almost say it is becoming an Indiana classic restaurant, where all the great cities in our state can now boast they have one.  I believe the reason they have expanded throughout the state is not only because they have good food, but when you visit this place, you always know you are going to have friendly, Indiana hospitality and service.

Their menu encompasses everything from burgers (made a million different ways!) to salads to wonderful homemade soups.  A family favorite of ours is their dill chips.  It is the first thing we order every visit.  They have a mo’fo sauce (their signature sauce) they add to many menu options and it adds a kick to the meal that is wonderful.  My husband and I go through stages where we will eat something again and again until we can’t eat it for a year.  At this time Buffalo chicken wraps are our craving and the Mo’Fo Buffalo Chicken Wrap from Scotty’s is amazing!

NCAA Final Four at Chumley’s

Happening Now!  Right now the locals are talking about Chumley’s, a local pub that offers 50 beers on tap and 101 bottled!

The NCAA Final 4 competition is taking place this weekend and fans are ready to cheer and holler as 4 teams fiercely battle to take home the 2012 NCAA Tournament trophy.  We all have our brackets ready to see not only which team wins, but who will win our own personal bracket competition people participate in throughout the whole United States.  Two years ago, (and you may think I am crazy, my husband thought I was), I choose Butler versus Purdue as my final 2 teams.  I am an Indiana girl, through and through, and I always choose Indiana teams.  Sadly, Purdue did not make it to the final round, but Butler did!  And I got 2nd place out of 30 competitors!  I can always count on my Hoosier basketball!

This year, sadly no Indiana teams are in the competition, but we are still excited to watch this annual event.    When it comes to watching college basketball, I am not sure which is more important, good food or a large flat screen TV to watch the game.  Thank goodness for Chumley’s, which is the perfect place, not only to watch, but to eat delicious food and drink.  It has huge flat screen TV’s along every wall!  There is literally not a bad seat in the whole place.  And visitors can enjoy their pub grub, including over 20 different gourmet burgers, delicious appetizers and pizza.  As an adult that still feels like a kid, my favorite is their mac ‘n’ cheese burger.  They take a big, juicy burger and add Kraft mac ‘n’ cheese to it.  It not only taste great, but it makes me feel young!  One of my co-workers shared Chumley’s is her favorite pub in town.  She quotes, “I really like Chumley’s because of the atmosphere. It’s an easy place to socialize and have a drink with friends. I enjoy their beer selection and their queso is amazing!”

As my husband would say, “Beer in hand,  burger in the other, and college basketball on a big flat screen TV, how could life be any better!” Chumley’s is the place where life is at its best.  The atmosphere is fun and laid back and the servers are friendly and upbeat.

Hunter’s Pub

Happening Now!  Planning a stay in Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana? Whether you are looking for delicious dining, interesting attractions and shops, enticing events or home away from home lodging—a getaway to Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana, is sure to satisfy. Right now the locals are talking about Hunter’s Pub, a local bar offering tasty food at 3 different Lafayette-West Lafayette locations!

It is 9am in the morning as I write this blog and all I can think about is the buffalo chicken wrap at Hunter’s Pub.  I do not usually eat lunch until 1pm so I am not sure how I am going to make it through the next few hours without my stomach converging with hunger pains!  This wrap has a lightly fried chicken breast smothered in a spicy hot buffalo sauce with the addition of cheese, lettuce and tomato and a side of ranch to dip it in.  It is perfection!  I usually substitute the fries (although they are yummy!) for their soup de jour which is made from scratch each day.  3 hours 50 minutes.  The countdown for lunch begins!  Not sure if my morning yogurt and pretzels is going to get through.

Hunter’s Pub offers a wide array of food ranging from good ol’ pub food such as fried potato skins,1/2 pound burgers, and slow roasted prime rib to healthier options such as blackened tilapia, a wide array of salads and vegetarian wraps.  The director at our CVB raves about their black bean burgers!  There are 3 locations within the area to choose from so if you are anywhere in the city most likely there is a Hunter’s Pub within 5 to 10 minutes from your location.  In addition, each day of the week there is a specialty drink special and a highlighted dinner entree. The atmosphere is upbeat and the wait staff is always friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu.

To learn more about Hunter’s Pub or any one of our wonderful Indiana dining locations visit our website at www.HomeOfPurdue.com.  3 hours 30 minutes…come on 1pm!!
