Lafayette-West Lafayette Weekend Update! Looking for a fun Indiana weekend getaway? Or do you live in this area and are looking for entertainment close by? Check out the endless possibilities for fun events happening this upcoming weekend in or near Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana.

Nine Irish Brothers in Lafayette opened its doors ten years ago, and they are going to celebrate this Friday, November 9! They will have giveaways, drinks specials ($1 off Guinness, Nine Irish Red, and Irish Butts), as well as some GREAT music from Ireland’s favorite son Brendan Loughrey! Brendan is a talented, energetic Irish musician with a huge repertoire of songs, including originals such as  Kenny Chesney,” and “Livin’ in the Heart of Ireland,” as well as outstanding renditions of traditional Irish tunes. He’s a great guy, as fun as he is talented, perfect for a celebration!

The Purdue Theatre Department showcases the musical, Next to Normal on Friday, November 9 and Saturday, November 10. The winner of the Pulitzer Prize for drama and three Tony awards, Next to Normal presents an unflinching look at a suburban family struggling with the effects of mental illness, set to a rock music score. Dad’s an architect; Mom rushes to pack lunches and pour cereal; their daughter and son are bright, wise-cracking teens, appearing to be a typical American family. And yet their lives are anything but normal because the mother has been battling manic depression for 16 years. Next to Normal takes audiences into the minds and hearts of each character, presenting their family’s story with love, sympathy and heart.

Lafayette Farmers Market Season 2012

Happening Now!  Right now the locals are talking about the Lafayette Farmers Markets, where locals and travelers have purchased fresh produce, locally crafted goods, local flowers and more for over 150 years.

Words cannot express the elation I feel that it is May and officially farmers market season.  My heart beat races in joy at the thought of fresh lettuce, tomatoes, apples, herbs, kettle corn (popped on site), homemade cookies and pies, etc.  I have an internal check list of everything I will buy throughout the whole year.  I did make a quick trip to the Easter Farmer’s Market in April, and walked away with oriental flowers (for my mother and mother in-law for Easter), lettuce, green onions, and monster cookies.  The salad I created with the fresh lettuce and onions was superb and my husband had the cookies eaten in 5 seconds flat!

I love cooking with fresh, local ingredients.  First, it feels good to support local farmers and producers.  Who doesn’t like feeling happy about supporting their local community?  Second, the produce is fresh and has a true taste.  True taste?  What does this mean, you may ask?  To me, a true taste is what vegetables and fruit should taste like.  There are no preservatives added to them to make them last longer, which alters the taste.  Have you ever had a locally grown Indiana strawberry?  They are juicy and sweet and literally, addicting!

The best part about Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana, it has three locations to buy local goods.  The Historic Lafayette Farmers Market (Saturdays), Sagamore West Farmer Market (Wednesdays), and Purdue Campus Farmers Market (Thursdays) offer visitors an opportunity to buy the finest produce around.  I live 5 minutes from each!  I am one lucky lady!

Whether you are looking for delicious dining, interesting attractions and shops, enticing events or home away from home lodging—a getaway to Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana, is sure to satisfy.  For more information about these farmers market, visit our website at www.HomeOfPurdue.com.
