Inspired Fire

IMG_4461Inspired Fire is a glass studio and gallery located right here in Lafayette! When you enter Inspired Fire, it’s hard not to be “blown” away by the gallery of handmade glass items. Flowers, vases, jewelry, and so much more! The art here is made in shop and by over 30 different local artists. So many of these beautiful pieces of art would make great gifts for a loved one, or a special treat for yourself!

My fellow intern, Emily, and I had the opportunity to visit earlier last year and were absolutely spoiled by owner Sharon Owens and the rest of the staff. As soon as you enter, you’re greeted by the smiling faces of people who absolutely love what they do. I learned more Inspired Fire Glass Fish Demoabout glass blowing that day than I ever expected when Emily and I were led to the studio and given demonstrations. First, we were able to see a typical beginners’ piece (a little glass fish!) made. It is amazing to see how within just a few minutes something so unique and exciting can be made! A little fish like this would make an adorable gift and booking a class to create something like this would definitely be a worthwhile experience that you and your friends or family would remember forever!

Sharon Owens even took the time to give us a personal tour of the building. Besides the gallery, there is a group studio that seats up to 8 with the ability to add 4 additional torches, as well as the new addition, the Hot Shop, which is over 1,000 square feet and has a Inspired Fire Sharon Making FLower200 pound glass furnace. She showed us how glass is melted and shaped into their beautiful glass flowers in the furnace.  Sharon also gave us a demonstration of how Inspired Fire’s famous glass Christmas ornaments are made. Overall, we had so much fun visiting the shop. If you’re looking for somewhere truly unique to visit in Lafayette, this is the place! Visit their website for more information about their gallery pieces, as well as their class times. Be sure to book your spot in advance because you don’t want to miss the chance to learn more about your new hobby, glass blowing!

Below you can watch a clip from our trip to Inspired Fire. Emily got to blow her own Christmas ornament, with the help of Sharon, of course!

Beautiful Art & More at the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette Gift Shop

GreaterLafArtMus2013.22 Great Cities, 1 Great University, “One Great Art Destination”. Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana, is home to many creative and unique art galleries and one that stands out and shines is the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette. This museum not only has revolving exhibits throughout the year, but a gift shop that offers one of a kind gifts.

January in Indiana. What comes to your mind? I think snow, cold weather, indoors. I am always trying to think of fun, local activities that will get me to venture out of my nice, warm house! An afternoon visit to the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette is one of the places that tantalizes my need to journey out where I can admire lovely artwork and as a bonus, shop at their amazing gift shop! We have many March birthdays in my family, and a trip to the gift shop is the perfect location to find gifts that my family members will enjoy.

Art Museum of Greater Lafayette 2012.9JPGThe Art Museum of Greater Lafayette gift shop features works of art by over forty local artists. Jewelry, clothing, paintings, and housewares created by regional artists are for sale. When one walks into the gift shop their senses come alive as sunlight streams in through a wall full of windows highlighting all the great shopping finds. From colorful hand-painted vases to custom-made jewelry to photography of Indiana landscapes; it is impossible to leave without purchasing something!

Another aspect I love about going to the art museum is to enjoy the exhibit that is on display. Currently, the exhibit that is running through March 2, is Painting Indiana III: Heritage of Place. This exhibition features works created en plein aire, French for “out of doors” by members of IPAPA and is the third in a series of successful exhibit/book projects.  One hundred works by Indiana plein air painters are on display. The book featuring all the art projects is available for sale in the gift shop. This book is on my shopping list to give my aunt who loves art!

Weekend Update! Looking for a fun Indiana weekend getaway? Or do you live in this area and are looking for entertainment close by? Check out the endless possibilities for fun events happening this upcoming weekend in Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana.

On Saturday afternoon, stroll downtown Lafayette and make sure you stop in at Artists’ Own and the LaLa Gallery & Studio, who are featuring special exhibits.  The Art Exhibit: Personas y Portales de Cuba y Guatemala is being presented at Artists’ Own, which is an exhibit with a distinctly Hispanic flavor. Two photographers, Al Knight and Dwayne Daehler present photographs of Cuba and Guatemala, countries they respectively have visited.  The Lala Gallery and Studio is hosting the Art Exhibit: What Looks Can Buy.  Artist, Owens has created 30 paintings, each exploring tension, color, texture and shape.  The series was inspired by his visit to Europe.

For the third year in a row, Wolf Park is partnering with the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra for a special outdoor performance, Wolf Park Presents: Howling Mozart After Hours! This Saturday, June 8, from 7:30 pm to 11 pm, enjoy a night of entertainment at the LSO performs the music of Mozart and other classical favorites by a string quartet. Will the wolves ‘sing’ along? You will have to head to Wolf Park to find out!   The Howl Night program will take place, but it will be in two parts, with the music in between. Come for the whole night, or just a little while. There is something for everyone at this special event. Bring along your own chairs or blankets to enjoy the performance, and then move to the grand stand to see the wolves in their habitat. Finish the evening with a stroll around the park- a flashlight might be in order this month! Also, enjoy some fresh popped corn or your own sticky marshmallow roasted on a campfire.
