Wedding Beauty at Ross Ade Football Stadium

How many times do you go to a wedding or event and wish there was something nice to look at besides the plain Jane banquet room walls? Well, you won’t find that at Ross-Ade Pavilion! This is a beautiful, modern, simplistic area that allows visitors wonderful views of the Ross Ade Football Stadium as well as campus. With many windows throughout the venue you are always able to find an interesting view.

I’ve attended several wedding receptions in the Ross-Ade Pavilion and each time I’m amazed by not only the view but also the food (it’s scrumptious!) and the professionalism of the staff. The venue can hold up to 800 people standing or 400 for seated events, yet you don’t feel cramped or overcrowded at all while you are there…. must be those windows.  They are even able to divide the space. One wedding I went to had the wedding ceremony on one side and the reception on the other. Another had dinner on one side and a huge dance floor with live band on the other.

Getting engaged and planning a wedding is a very exciting time in a couple’s life, yet the slew of wedding decisions can be for some people a bit daunting.  Couples ask themselves the following: Where will the wedding ceremony take place?  Should we have a small or large reception?  Who creates beautiful flower arrangements at a good price?  What’s our budget?  This is just a tiny portion of the decisions that have to be made.  The good news is the Visit Lafayette-West Lafayette team has a staff member, Ashley Gregory, who can not only assist with these questions, but make suggestions and help you find locations here in town, help with hotel sleeping room blocks and point you in the right direction for vendors (such as flowers, photographers etc.).

Most weddings have out of town guests visiting.  Ashley can help couples get the best rates at our local area hotels for these guests.  She has worked with all of our hotels, and visited reception venues, indoor and outdoor locations, traditional and unique and is a great source to take advantage of when planning a wedding.  When I was planning my wedding 7 years ago I did not live in the area and needed help planning, so I called Visit Lafayette-West Lafayette. Ashley provided me a list of reception venues, vendors, and helped me book the hotel for my guests to stay.  My mother-in-law also got in contact with Ashley for local brochures for the goodies bags for our guests.  Each guest received a complimentary Lafayette-West Lafayette visitors guide.

Duncan Hall: One Great Wedding Destination

Hall

Ballroom

2 Great Cities, 1 Great University, “One Great Wedding Destination”. Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana, is home to many fabulous wedding ceremony and reception venues that will make your day special.  One such location that is not only a beautiful venue, but has historical significance in our area is Thomas Duncan Hall. This Georgian, Colonial-style building was built as a meeting place for social, patriotic, charitable, educational and cultural events in the early-mid 1900s.

Thomas Duncan Hall is special in our family because it is the location where my sister, Jenny, married her husband, Tosh, over 11 years ago.  The site selection was a tough decision for my sister because she wanted eloquence with a touch of history and romance.  She and Tosh lived in Phoenix, Arizona, and they traveled back to tour different sites in the area.  When they visited Duncan Hall, they fell in love with the venue.  They loved the high ceilings, the handsome gothic windows and the large stage in the ballroom.  The additional parlor rooms speak of days gone by with the promise of creating lovely future memories.  The cherry on the cake was the acoustics.  They love dancing and music, and the ballroom has wonderful acoustics!

Their reception was so much fun!  The bridal party sat on the stage and overlooked the 150 guests.  They chose a local caterer to serve a buffet style meal which was set up in a small room off the ballroom.  (Note: there is a fully equipped kitchen along with a dinner service for up to 170 people and elegant silver serving pieces available for a reasonable rate.)  I gave the toast from the stage, which has gone down in history as one of the best toasts in our family history.  The whole room laughed as I shared my sister and my exploits over the course of our lives.  The laughter got everyone in the mood for an evening of dancing and music!   It was lovely!

Duncan Hall is a great venue for weddings and special events with its multiple rooms and ballroom. There is space for smaller parties ranging from 2 to 50, to their ballroom which can seat 220 people theater style.  The balcony also can seat 47.  The historical ambiance is one of a kind in the area.  It will truly make any special event stand out and be memorable.

Fresh Local Produce at Wea Creek Orchard

WeaCreekOrchard_tractorandbarnLooking for something to do this weekend? Why not head to Wea Creek Orchard in Lafayette, IN and pick some fresh peaches, nectarines, apples, pumpkins, enjoy a wagon ride, purchase some honey or apple butter, jams and jellies, etc.? You’ll have loads of fun!

WeaCreekOrchard_0235Wea Creek Orchard is a 7th generation family farm, started in 1829. Originally, a livestock and row crop farm, it is now home to around 2000 fruit trees! The current owner, moved here in 2007 and started planting trees about 200-400 at a time. Now they farm 72 acres total but 17 acres of that are made up of specialty crops. They selected dwarf tree varieties as they knew they wanted to make this a U-pick orchard and it makes it easier to get to the fruit, especially for young children as the fruit is lower to the ground. In addition to the orchard they have two barns on site, one built in 1870 that they rent for special events such as weddings from April to November and one built in 1880 that houses their market. They have an average of about 30 weddings a year in the barn and even has their own wedding planner to help you plan your big day for no additional charge!

wea-orchard-2012-3jpgA day at the orchard is loads of fun for the whole family! All ages enjoy learning where their food comes from, how it is grown and getting to collect your own fruit, right from the trees. Kids spend time scouring the pumpkin patch for just the perfect pumpkin for their jack o lantern. Take a wagon ride around the orchard to scope out just where you want to go and to learn all about what is available there. Learn about honey and how important bees are to the trees. Pick up some hedge apples for fun or a gourd for your fall decorations. Lots of fun can be had, spending a day at the orchard. After you’ve picked out the best produce, don’t forget to swing by the market and pick up some apple butter, apple cider, jams, jellies, salsa, barbecue sauce and more to get you through the winter!

wea-orchard-2012-9jpgWeaCreekOrchard_sampletableA variety of fruit is available at the orchard! This year they have Pixie Crunch apples (we’re told these are so good, they may replace Honey Crisp! Even better, they are a Purdue variety!), Gala apples, Blonde apples (these have become my personal favorites, taste a bit like a pear, I think), Dande Red apples , Mollie Delicious apples (so sweet, it’s like biting into sugar), Kane apples, Golden Delicious Apples, Fuji apples, Ruby John apples (these almost look purple!), nectarines and peaches. They’ve just started some Cherry Trees so look for those in the coming years.

Wea Creek Orchard is open seasonally July-October on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays (check their website or call for hours before you go!) and is located at 5618 S. 200 E. on the south side of Lafayette. We hope you will visit and have a wonderful time!

Celebrate Your Special Event at Purdue Union

Bride & Groom cutting the cake!

2 Great Cities, 1 Great University, Be a Tourist in Your Own Backyard!    Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana, is home to the Purdue Memorial Union, which not only showcases our beautiful university, but offers a gorgeous venue to host a special event!

A few years ago, two of my family’s greatest friends, Aaron and Sherri, hosted a wedding celebration that will stay in my memory forever and is ultimately the best wedding I have ever attended.  Aaron is from Madison, Wisconsin, and Sherri is from Indianapolis, Indiana, and they met while attending Purdue University seven years ago.  They made so many wonderful memories at college, that when it came to deciding the location, Purdue was at the top of their list.  They met with the staff at the Union, and shared the professionalism, friendliness and confidence they portrayed along with the beauty of the venue assisted in making their final decision.  Once the decision was made, they said a great relief hit them, because the Union made the event planning process a breeze by taking charge of all the little and big details of this special day.  They were also living in Saint Louis at the time starting new careers, and having a venue that had a lot of experience hosting large events was a desired requirement!

Their wedding was amazing and truthfully after over 20 weddings my husband and I have attended in the last 6 years, the best!  (Possibly even more fabulous than our own!  Ha!)  The food was absolutely delicious from the assortment of cheese, fruits, and vegetables they served as an appetizer, to juicy, rich pork tenderloin with roasted red potatoes and seasoned green beans as the entree.  The sauce over the pork tenderloin was smoky, yet smooth.  It was also piping hot!  How many times have you been to a wedding and ate rubbery, cold chicken?  This meal had nothing rubbery about it!

They were married in the South Ballroom at the Union which is beautiful.  Stained glass windows, dark wood, ceilings that feel like they reach the sky; what could be better?  Aaron and Sherri love music, and they hired a band from Indiana to play. My husband literally had to drag me off the large dance floor at the end of the evening!

The ultimate best part of the evening was the service.  The Purdue Memorial Union hires college staff, and I want to share they were not only friendly, but as the saying goes, “on the ball”.  From the moment we walked in the door, we were greeted, our drinks were always filled throughout the night, and all requests were met immediately.  If there is an award for service, I hope their staff gets top honors, because they deserve it.  I highly recommend checking out the Purdue Memorial Union for your next event!
