Rainbow of Colors: 21 Petals

A rainbow of colors pop as you approach the field. Sunflowers tower high, looking toward the sun. A friendly bee buzzes from one flower to the next pollinating the beautiful flowers. A butterfly gently flaps its wings as it rests on a petal. Life is peaceful, quiet and calm here at 21 Petals, a new flower farm in Lafayette.

My family and I visited this farm and thoroughly enjoyed the evening and the experience. We have a 5 ½ month old and happened to forget the stroller that day, but it was no problem as it wasn’t too far to walk from the car. We just took turns holding her. The owner, Stefani warmly greeted us, welcomed us to the farm and explained the process. They provide the buckets and the pruners, and she explained how to cut the flowers. You can fill up the entire bucket, the size of a child’s beach bucket for one low price. We went off exploring, picking all of our favorite flowers as we saw them. There were quite the variety of sunflowers, zinnias, gladiolus, dahlias, celosia, cosmos and more in bloom while we were there. The flower selection changes throughout the season.  All the flowers are arranged in rows with plenty of grassy space in between for you to walk.

We were a bit rushed just due to our daughter’s schedule, but I would have loved to take a little more time, it was so relaxing and beautiful here. We filled our bucket and headed back to the barn. Stefani gathered up our flowers and placed them in a bag, then directed us to the barn to select a vase if we wanted (included in the price of the flowers). We paid for the flowers and took them home to arrange them. We were able to get two good sized vases full of flowers and could have split them up to have probably four decent sized arrangements. (We have cats who are very nosey and like to eat flowers, so we stuck to two and put them up high, away from the cat’s spaces!) What a fun experience! It’s so much more fun to pick them yourself than to go to a flower shop to purchase a bouquet and it’s more economical for sure!

Do you see our kitty??

We hope you will visit this flower farm on the south side of Lafayette and enjoy it as much as we did! You can find it on County Road 700 South between US 231 and County Road 100 East (Actual address is: 748 E 700 S Lafayette, IN 47909).

Living in Chauncey

What is it like to live in Chauncey, the downtown area of West Lafayette, situated between the Purdue campus and the Riverfront district? Natalie, Purdue University Graduate shares her experience living in Chauncey!

What to do, where to eat and where to hangout:

  • EATS
    • Fiesta
      • Fiesta is a Mexican restaurant local to Purdue’s campus. Living in Chauncey makes it easy to access delicious burritos and quesadillas. If you are looking for vegetarian or vegan options, Fiesta also offers some great alternatives. My favorite things to order is a burrito with vegetables and make sure to ask for the ranch sauce!

        Fiesta!

    • Noodles and I
      • Noodles and I isn’t a restaurant that everyone is aware of, but offers some amazing Asian cuisine. The cute hole-in-the-wall restaurant, right across the street from Maje Sushi, offers a small interior space to order quickly and eat in. My favorite thing to order at Noodles and I is vegetarian Pad Thai. Another favorite of students around Chauncey Square is Chicken or Vegetable Pho, make sure to add the sauce on the table for extra flavor!
    • Poke Hibachi
      • The first poke hibachi place to come to Purdue’s campus, Poke Hibachi! Located a couple stores back from Mad Mushroom, the poke restaurant offers fresh poke bowls with your choice of toppings. It’s a quick and healthy dining option!

        Poke Hibachi

    • Maje Sushi
      • Personally, I think Maje Sushi is the best sushi around Purdue’s campus. I may be bias since it is located right in Chauncey mall, but the sushi is fresh and they have a lot of different options, even for vegans and vegetarians. Next time you go in, try the mushroom roll… it is to die for!
  • COFFEE SHOPS / HANGOUT
    • Greyhouse
      • Greyhouse, being newly renovated in March of 2018, offers a wide variety of space to hangout, chat with friends or catch up on your work. The atmosphere inside of Greyhouse is relaxed and aesthetically pleasing. They also offer a wide variety of coffees, teas and food options like there famous crepes and newly added donuts!

        Greyhouse

    • Vienna
        • Vienna, which is located right next door to Greyhouse, is another local option for a nice hangout spot. The unique atmosphere makes Vienna special to Chauncey mall. They also offer a wide variety of food options, like breakfast sandwiches and vegan pastries!

    • Red Mango
      • Looking for a smoothie bowl? Red Mango is my favorite place, and probably only place in the West Lafayette area, where you can find smoothie bowls along with frozen yogurt and smoothies! My roommates and I love to grab a smoothie bowl during the warm months and take a walk around Purdue’s campus.
  • SHOPS
    • Underground Printing
      • If you are looking for a store to find unique Purdue apparel and not sure where to go, Underground Printing has got your back. I stumbled into Underground Printing a couple of days ago on a whim and was pleasantly surprised! Located right next to Lotsa Pizza, they offer old school Purdue sweatshirts, Harry’s gear and anything in between. You can even place a bulk order with them next time you stop in!
    • Vons
      • Vons is one of the only stores close to Chauncey Mall that is unique to Purdue’s campus. Located close to Jimmy John’s, Vons is home to a large variety of unique gifts. Looking for records? Vons has them. Looking for a cool poster? Vons has that too. Looking for spirit rocks, clothing or anything else? Vons has got you covered! Vons has everything from incense, music and even books. It’s worth the trip inside (and p.s. dogs are allowed inside too)!

Inspired Fire

IMG_4461Inspired Fire is a glass studio and gallery located right here in Lafayette! When you enter Inspired Fire, it’s hard not to be “blown” away by the gallery of handmade glass items. Flowers, vases, jewelry, and so much more! The art here is made in shop and by over 30 different local artists. So many of these beautiful pieces of art would make great gifts for a loved one, or a special treat for yourself!

My fellow intern, Emily, and I had the opportunity to visit earlier last year and were absolutely spoiled by owner Sharon Owens and the rest of the staff. As soon as you enter, you’re greeted by the smiling faces of people who absolutely love what they do. I learned more Inspired Fire Glass Fish Demoabout glass blowing that day than I ever expected when Emily and I were led to the studio and given demonstrations. First, we were able to see a typical beginners’ piece (a little glass fish!) made. It is amazing to see how within just a few minutes something so unique and exciting can be made! A little fish like this would make an adorable gift and booking a class to create something like this would definitely be a worthwhile experience that you and your friends or family would remember forever!

Sharon Owens even took the time to give us a personal tour of the building. Besides the gallery, there is a group studio that seats up to 8 with the ability to add 4 additional torches, as well as the new addition, the Hot Shop, which is over 1,000 square feet and has a Inspired Fire Sharon Making FLower200 pound glass furnace. She showed us how glass is melted and shaped into their beautiful glass flowers in the furnace.  Sharon also gave us a demonstration of how Inspired Fire’s famous glass Christmas ornaments are made. Overall, we had so much fun visiting the shop. If you’re looking for somewhere truly unique to visit in Lafayette, this is the place! Visit their website for more information about their gallery pieces, as well as their class times. Be sure to book your spot in advance because you don’t want to miss the chance to learn more about your new hobby, glass blowing!

Below you can watch a clip from our trip to Inspired Fire. Emily got to blow her own Christmas ornament, with the help of Sharon, of course!
