Wagyu Burger-liciousness at East End Grill

Burger-liciousness is taking place all over Lafayette-West Lafayette this month! We have been featuring some of our favorite burger joints across town and enjoying every delectable bite. The featured restaurant today is East End Grill.

We are happy with our selection!

East End has 2 burgers that put it on our burger map.  First is the East End Burger. This burger is an 8oz prime beef patty with Applewood smoked bacon, cheddar cheese, tomato, pickle & baby greens. Ashley from our office shares, “The presentation of this burger is fantastic. I had to pause a moment to figure out how I wanted to eat it as it was as tall if not taller than my hand turned on its side. The meat and other toppings were perfectly and evenly portioned. A huge slice of tomato and large chunky slice of sweet pickle topped Applewood smoked bacon, 8 ounces of prime beef, cheddar cheese and baby greens. The flavor was amazing!”

East End Burger – check out that thick slice of fresh tomato…Delicious!

The Prime Valley Farms Wagyu Burger is the other burger that had our taste buds soaring. This burger is locally raised 100% full blood Wagyu Beef. It is on their menu throughout the year when East End Grill gets Wagyu beef supplied to them from a local farm, so it is featured on a limited time basis. (Fingers crossed it is served when visiting because it is an amazing sandwich.) This burger is served with a sweet tomato relish, creamy Saint-Andre Cheese and arugula. A co-worker and I ordered this burger. It will melt in your mouth with the dense marbling that makes it juicy and delicious! The relish, cheese and arugula give it the perfect balance of sweet and savory. It is one of the best burgers I personally have ever ordered out. Add in some of the East End Grill fries, and you are in burger/fry heaven!

Teays River Servin’ Rockin’ Good Burgers

It’s Burger Month in Lafayette-West Lafayette. We are heading to the best burger joints in town and sharing why we LOVE burgers.  Check out our latest review of Teays River Brewing and Public House. This restaurant opened this year and is rockin’ the burger scene!

BURGERS!! YUM!

Ultimate Beer Burger reviews:

Emily said, ‘I’m usually not a person who orders burgers when going out to eat, but this one sounded too good to pass up. The best part of this burger is the thick and creamy beer cheese. It’s a great addition to the already wonderful burger and toppings. The beer burger tasted like the cooks put real time and effort into its creation. I will for sure order this again! I would recommend to anyone, burger fan or not, they’re sure to love it!

“The Ultimate Beer Burger from Teays River is a mouthwatering 8oz. burger patty. The hop mayo, beer cheese, and onion jam add a distinct flavor to the already beer marinated patty. Once you take your first bite out of this burger, I promise you won’t be leaving anything on the plate,” adds Corey.

Korean BBQ Burger review:

Ashley’s thoughts, “Wonderful burger! With the first bite, I noticed an explosion of flavor. The meat was juicy yet had lots of flavor. Black pepper and the vinegary slaw flavor stood out. It was very good. Get it with the chips and a side of beer cheese! YUM!

Korean Burger

Angus Steak Burger review:

Samm shares, “I had the Angus steak burger with the barbecue sauce.  The burger itself was thick, juicy and full of flavor.  The bun was lightly toasted, and the muenster cheese melted on top was the perfect pairing to the sweet and savory barbecue sauce.  I would definitely order this burger again!  I recommend the house chips as a side. They were a great complement to the meal.”

Angus Steak Burger

Black, Blue and Green Burger Review:

I had the Black, Blue and Green Burger. ” I love blue cheese and this burger definitely delivered on the blue cheese with the dressing and crumbles. The green olives and green onions were simple yet really made the burger shine adding a salty, fresh taste.  And the burger itself was so juicy and delicious on a dense, fluffy bun.”

Black, Blue and Green Burger

We were curious because they didn’t ask us how we wanted out burgers cooked and each one of us has our own way we like them cooked from medium rare to well done. But each one came out mouth-watering perfect! The owner shared they have a special meat ratio they have blended for them. The blend in our opinion is fabulous!!

DT Kirbys -The Unusual Burger Creations

Lafayette-West Lafayette is celebrating Burgers this month! We are exploring the fun and unique flavors of all the burgers around town and this week we are featuring DT Kirby’s!

They are sure to satisfy any crazy craving with burger creations one cannot find anywhere else! From burgers topped with appetizers galore to comfort burgers loaded with mac n cheese, there is something fabulous about each burger. Check out our reviews from our recent visit!

Burger Mania!

The Kirbside Burger, burger with friggin’ fries, onion rings, fried pickles, crispy chips, signature mushrooms and pepper jack cheese! All on a toasted pretzel bun…then add house sauce, lettuce and diced tomatoes. Samm shared, “I had the Kirbside Burger.  This was a flavor powerhouse! It was perfectly stacked and loaded with generous portions of home fries, onion rings, house chips, lettuce and fried pickles!  All this deliciousness was packed inside a fresh pretzel bun with just the right amount of salt crystals glazed over the top!  You can also include the house sauce and diced tomatoes, but mine was enough just the way I ordered it!”

Kirbside Burger- it’s massive!

The Grilled Cheese/ Cheese Burger, burger covered in awesome sauce, cucumber and with…2 grilled cheese sandwiches as the bun. “This is an impressive sandwich. It’s really enough for two or maybe three people to share! Two grilled cheese sandwiches as the bun. I’m not sure what the awesome sauce is but it was good. Had a nice flavor almost like a light hint of taco seasoning? The cucumber was an interesting addition. I like cucumber so was good with it. Think I would prefer pickles though. I had the signature mushrooms on the side. They were very good! Sliced mushrooms that were lightly battered and fried. Served with the awesome sauce. I couldn’t eat everything. I’d definitely recommend sharing unless you are super hungry. You will need some napkins no matter what!” Ashley shared.

Grilled Cheese Cheeseburger

The Bacon Egg Burger, seasoned bacon on the burger, melted American cheese and topped with an over easy egg, Samantha’s review, “The Bacon Egg Burger from DT Kirby’s was everything I wanted it to be! It was deliciously cheesy, and the egg was such a perfect topping! If you want a unique twist on breakfast for dinner, you’ve gotta try this one!”

The Mac n’ Nap, pretzel bun…a 4-cheese mac, pepper jack, seasoned bacon on top of a ½ LB burger and pickle. “The mac n’ cheese is rich and creamy on top of a big burger and peppery bacon. The sandwich is huge and I could have just eaten the mac n’ cheese and bacon as a meal!” shares Sara.

Burger Fever at Sgt. Preston’s

Burger fever is happening in our 2 great cities! We are hittin’ the road to check out the best burgers in Lafayette-West Lafayette. Our first stop is Sgt. Preston’s. We had heard they have an awesome Preston Burger, but we had to try their burgers ourselves and get the real rundown. Four of us went out, took on and conquered the different burger flavors at this local bar that is home to the largest patio in Lafayette!

Pre-burger excitedness for what is to come!

Samm shares, I had the Black & Bleu Burger.  The combination of the seasoning and mushrooms with the bleu cheese was absolutely perfect. The cheese in particular was mouthwatering. Even if you don’t think you’re a fan of the strong flavor of bleu cheese, you should give this burger a try. The flavors really bring it all together. Make sure you get it with the steak fries.  It’s the perfect complement to the burger!”

Black

Lisa says, “I always love a good burger and the Preston Burger, in my humble opinion, is the best in town. When I saw one of the monthly specials was a Caprese Turkey Burger I thought I need to try that. However, I like a good beef burger – no turkey for this girl. They gladly swapped the turkey burger for the real deal. It was covered in mozzarella, basil and balsamic vinaigrette and was amazing!”

Caprese Burger

Ashley had the Canadian Burger, which includes Canadian bacon, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato and weakness sauce. She reviews, “The Canadian Burger was surprising. The weakness sauce is a creamy horseradish type sauce and was a great addition to the burger and added a lot of flavor without being overwhelming. The burger was juicy and very flavorful with a sprinkling of cracked pepper and coarse ground salt served with a nice helping of cheddar cheese, lettuce and tomato on a crisp bun.

Canadian Burger

My burger of choice was the Jammin’ Jalapeño Burger. This burger sounds hot, but really it is mild and savory! Angus beef, smoked gouda cheese, crispy bacon and sweet Jalapeño jam make for an interesting combo. The burger was cooked to perfection (medium just the way I like it) and was juicy and delicious. I recommend getting a side of the jam and dipping your fries in it…yummy!

Folie: French & New American Fine Dining

Folie is a “French & New American Fine Dining” restaurant located at 526 Main Street in downtown Lafayette. Looking at the menu, before we went, I was a bit intimidated by some of the items, but we decided to give it a try. We visited for lunch, where the dishes are a bit more traditional and not as exotic but flavor and experience sure didn’t disappoint. The restaurant offers a contemporary feel in a historic area of downtown and has two sides to the restaurant, side for 21 and over that includes a bar and then the regular dining room where guests of all ages are welcome.

Folie Burger

The menus change throughout the year, but we tried the “Cemita” which is a breaded chicken breast, Oazaca cheese, avocado, onions and chipotle aioli and the “Folie Burger” which has onion jam, mushroom, gouda cheese, tomato, lettuce and horseradish aioli. Corey shared, “The chicken sandwich is a thinly fried chicken breast, covered in Oaxaca cheese and an aioli sauce that complements the natural flavor of the chicken to perfection! It will be sure to guarantee a return visit to the restaurant once you try it!” The Folie Burger was surprising. I wasn’t sure about the onion jam, but it was amazing! Basically, just caramelized onions but it made the burger! The horseradish aioli was a great addition as well and added that extra flavor to make the burger extraordinary. We loved our food but both kept eyeing the “Tacos al Pastor” that kept coming out of the kitchen. I had thought about ordering but just wasn’t sure but so disappointed that I didn’t go for it. I’m going to have to go back. The Tacos were marinated pork, charred pineapple, avocado mousse, cilantro, onion and spicy peanut sauce. We were all too full for dessert, but they all sounded good.

Tacos al Pastor

The dinner menu currently has some more unique offerings such as stuffed zucchini blossoms, grilled octopus, Rack of Wild Boar, Lamb Shank, Ethiopian Spiced Yard Bird, etc. But also, has more traditional items such as Oysters on the half shell, Pan Seared Salmon, Fettuccine Fra Divavolo, Bavette Steak and a burger of the month. The flavor and presentation were amazing with our lunch items, I would be willing to be a bit more adventurous when I return for dinner and try something I’ve never had before. I’m sure it will be amazing and beautifully presented. A fantastic choice for your next date night or business meeting. Service won’t disappoint either. Our server was very attentive and brought us everything in a timely manner, checked in with us appropriately yet gave us space as well. Overall a fantastic experience and I cannot wait to return!

Taste Buds Soar at Red Bird Cafe

Loaded fries

2 Great Cities, 1 Great University, Be a Tourist in Your Own Backyard! Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana, is home to over 275 local restaurants and one just popped up that is making our taste buds soar and our bellies quite happy. Red Bird Cafe is the newest restaurant to our dining scene and we have to say from our recent visit that we are thrilled by the addition!

First let’s start with the food! 5 of us visited this Red Bird Cafe a few weeks ago. We explored the menu and decided on their loaded cheese fries, French fries with their signature white queso, bacon crumbles, sour cream and green onions, as an appetizer.  We literally fought for the last fry, they were so good. They were salty and cheesy and oh so delicious! Along with our appetizer they brought out homemade Beignets. I tried so hard to only eat a bite as I had ordered a large lunch but I couldn’t stop tasting this fried piece of dough with a light sprinkle of powdered sugar.  YUM! My co-worker Ashley shares, “The Beignets that come with the meals are fluffy on the inside, crispy on the outside and covered in cinnamon and sugar! They taste like a fluffier version of an elephant ear. I love them! The meals are all good sized and very filling. I enjoyed my meal and am looking forward to going back.”

For lunch I ordered off of the breakfast menu which they said they offer all day.  My choice was the biscuits and pepper sausage gravy that came with hash browns.  I also added bacon to my selection. I have reviewed biscuits and gravy in past blogs and these rival the best in the area. The gravy is smooth and peppery on top of light, dense biscuits. They were just amazing! Add in the perfectly fried hash browns and crispy bacon and it was one of the best breakfasts I think I have ever had.  I highly recommend!  Another one of my co-workers, Lisa, who we say we are twin eaters, ordered the same meal and she agreed it was fabulous!

Biscuits and gravy with hash browns

A few of my co-workers ordered from their lunch menu and selected the buffalo chicken wrap and fajita chicken wrap.  They both really enjoyed them!  Another team member ordered a custom omelet which they were happy to accommodate her dietary needs. She shares, “The omelet was tasty, fluffy, light, cooked just enough and filled with four different cheese options, just to my liking. Always pleased when breakfast items are served all day and they are willing the accommodate special diet requests.”

Buffalo Chicken Wrap

Second, let’s review the service. Friendly, kind and accommodating. Everyone from the hostess to our waitress were so nice. They refilled our beverages regularly, checked on our table periodically, and were just pleasant. As we were leaving our waitress shared on Wednesday nights they have “All you can eat catfish fillets,” which sounds amazing!

Third and lastly, decor! Red Bird Cafe is just so cute and lovely. It is open and bright with fun decorations like a hanging bicycle on the wall. It was also exceptionally clean, which I love! The exposed beams and ducts on the ceiling and cement ceilings give it an industrial look yet it is really homey and comfortable as well. I believe it used to be an auto shop and it is crazy how they made it into such a beautiful restaurant.

Beignets

Overall, we highly recommend this restaurant.  We can’t wait to go back and explore so many more options on their menu! Red Bird Cafe is located in downtown Dayton, Indiana.

Southern Flavors Delight at East End Grill

Walking down Main Street in historic downtown Lafayette you will come across many wonderful local businesses and restaurants but one that really stands out is the East End Grill. As it states in the name, it’s on the East End of Main Street between 10th and 11th Streets. As you walk by, you are welcomed by inviting outdoor seating and stately lanterns on the front of the building. As you enter, you see a large open area decorated with industrial, urban features. This is something you would expect to see in a larger city such as Chicago or Indianapolis. The owners really wanted something urban and modern but also something that was classic and would blend well with the block’s history. The buildings on that block date from the 1870’s after all.

The food here matches the atmosphere, with a more upscale feel than most places yet still casual. The owner has traveled across the U.S. but has spent most of his career in the South. Therefore, you will find, many of the dishes has a Southern flare, such as their famous Shrimp and Grits and another guest favorite, BBQ Ribs.

East End Grill Arancini Balls

While there, our group ordered a good mix of items. To start we tried a couple appetizers, the House Cut Fries and Arancini Balls. The tables at East End are designed to be a bit larger than usual with sharing in mind, which is exactly what we did with the appetizers (and of course we tried each other’s meals too, they were too good not to share!). The House Cut Fries were perfectly cooked, thin cut fries. Crisp on the outside and smooth and soft on the inside dusted with parmesan and herbs. The fries are served with a wonderful roasted garlic aioli dipping sauce, which in our opinion was so much better than ketchup. The Arancini Balls are lightly battered saffron risotto balls covered with house made Bolognese sauce and served over Pomodoro sauce. Again, it was crisp and crunchy on the outside yet smooth and creamy on the inside. We loved the flavor and the texture of these balls.

East End Grill Crabcake Salad

After the appetizers we were getting pretty full, yet we couldn’t resist the entrée items. We each had something different; the Crab Cake Salad, Shrimp and Grits and the East End Burger. The Crab Cake Salad was a large, meaty, flawlessly crisp lump crab cake served over field greens and corn salsa. The dressing is a Remoulade and Roasted Red Pepper Aioli, which was sweet and creamy. This dish was full of flavor and really made an otherwise boring salad, something exciting, fun and filling. The Shrimp and Grits was

Shrimp and Grits

delicious! I’m not a grits person at all and usually curl my lip at it, but my friend encouraged me to try this and I was very surprised. The flavor was amazing and the texture, which is usually what gets me, was silky and smooth. It does have a bit of a kick for my very wimpy palate, but I would even consider ordering it in the future. It was very cheesy and served with smoking goose tasso ham, roasted red peppers and green onions. My friend just calls it “yumminess!”. Now for the East End Burger. The presentation of this burger is fantastic. The flavor was amazing, I couldn’t help but lick my lips to make sure I got every morsel of flavor after every bite.  We are told that the Wagyu Burger is even better than the regular East End Burger. While they were not offering the Wagyu Burger the day we were there, we are told it will be back on the menu very soon. We can’t wait to try that one as well.

East End Grill- East End Burger and Fries

We walked out of East End Grill fully satisfied and very pleased with our meal. We cannot wait to return and try some of the other offerings such as the Cutting Board, Wagyu Burger, Pan Roasted Salmon, East End Pastrami Cobb Salad and the BBQ Baby Back Pork Ribs, not to mention the dessert items! We were too full for dessert, but they sounded delicious!  There is a good variety of menu options for everyone, but they are also very open to working with special diets or religious beliefs that prohibit certain items. Those that like to make dining reservations can easily do so with East End Grill’s online reservation system powered by RESERVE, found on the homepage of their website or social media pages. I know I will be going back very soon! If you go, be sure to tell us what you loved!

Savor Ramen at Yatagarasu

Yatagarasu, a new Japanese ramen shop in downtown Lafayette, is bringing a new vibe to restaurants in the Lafayette / West Lafayette area. On Monday, I went to dinner with a  friend where we tried both the Spicy Ramen and the Vegetable Ramen along with ordering a pot of the seasonal tea.

Spicy Ramen

I would say that Yatagarasu is relatively casual, with an aesthetically pleasing interior and inviting atmosphere. The sitting area is pretty small but cozy enough to bring a date or a couple of friends. Located at 533 Main Street, it is a great location central to downtown Lafayette.

Vegetable Ramen

The menu is short and concise, making it easy for us to pick out what we were craving. Being a vegetarian, I was pleased to see that they offered a vegetable ramen option. On the other hand, my friend was looking for something with complex flavor and ordered the spicy ramen. The ramen itself was packed with flavor and you definitely got your money’s worth. The size of the meals were large, enough for leftovers in my opinion. The flavor of the ramen had depth and dimension, and was delicious!

The restaurant also seems to be bringing a lot of guests. For a Monday night, the restaurant was pretty packed but on the positive side we did not have to wait for our table. With our meal we ordered a pot of the seasonal tea: cherry black tea. The tea was served in traditional Japanese tea cups, which I thought was an appealing touch.

Cherry Black Tea

If you are not a fan of ramen, they do offer some other options, appetizers and even dessert. As for the drink menu, they offer a selection to choose from.

Next time you are planning a restaurant date, girls night or just want to explore something new… make sure to try out Yatagarasu! Natalie, Purdue University Student and VLWL Intern, shares this blog.

The Friendly Hang Out – Ol’ Buffalo Bar & Grill

Old Buffalo’s Outpost Bar and Grill is Lafayette’s most friendly hangout. If you’re looking for a home-cooked meal without all the hassle of cooking yourself, you need to stop in to this local favorite! When you enter, you’ll be greeted by the friendliest staff around. My coworker, Emily, and I had the chance to stop in there for lunch earlier this summer.

Locals love this bar and grill. If you want to see old friends and grab a drink, Old Buffalo’s is for you. Their menu has a variety to pick from – wings, unique burgers, grilled chicken, or a tenderloin, just for starters. Emily and I had to try the wings for an appetizer. They were delightfully crispy, flavorful, and not too spicy! They’re definitely a must-try for anyone visiting.

Check out their website for their daily food and drink specials! There’s Tenderloin Tuesday, $3.25 wine on Saturdays, and so many other amazing deals. I absolutely had to try the tenderloin when we went. As any Midwesterner, I love a good tenderloin. I enjoyed the breaded tenderloin, although they do have a grilled option. Lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo and pickle are all served on the side. It also comes with fresh french fries. You can’t beat a well-made tenderloin for lunch, and I would really recommend trying it on your trip to Ol’ Buffalo!

The menu is short, but has varied and exciting options besides what I ordered. You can get delicious slow-roasted chili, Ol Yellow Eye (a burger topped with a fried egg), a pulled pork sandwich, and more. Old Buffalo Bar & Grill has a pool table, bar games, and often live entertainment. It has a real sense of community, and you can’t help but feel right at home.
