On Friday, April 6th is the Wabash Center’s 65th Anniversary Gala. Celebrate decades of serving the community! From 6-10pm, you can join in the Gala that highlights 65 years of service to children and adults with disabilities in Greater Lafayette. Each year on Purdue’s campus is Boiler Con! Boiler Con 2018 is our own comic con – come and meet amazing comic book artists and writers, take part in card and board game tournaments, see the unique vendors, sign up for the cosplay contest, and enjoy panels of special guests on April 7! Stop into the Purdue Memorial Union on April 7th from 3-8pm to experience all there is to offer! (And, it is FREE to the public!) Special guests include: Bernard Chang, former Imagineer and Comic Book Creator Mackey McCandlish: Creator of Call of Duty games. If you plan on attending, please be aware of the following rules:

  •  No profanity allowed. That includes messages on signs or clothes.
  • Costumes cannot promote alcohol, illegal drugs, tobacco, or firearms/weapons.
  • NO WEAPONS. All firearms/weapons, real or props, are prohibited from the event.
  • Costumes cannot be obscene or offensive, or endorse any form of hate.
  • NO NUDITY. All costumes should provide enough coverage to be worn in public and should be in good taste and appropriate for a family-friendly environment.
  • If costumes are deemed too revealing, you will be asked to cover up.
  • Gore and graphic violence must be minimal.

Weekend Update: Easter Comes Early & Live Music

Getting excited for the Easter? Even though it’s not until April 1st, the Easter Bunny is coming to town starting this weekend. Hop on down to the Tippecanoe Mall and welcome the Easter Bunny Visit Lafayette-West Lafayette Facebook 2131-fb-118702231488640_1738469802845200for the holiday season! He will be available 11am-8pm Monday through Thursday, 10am-9pm Friday-Saturday, and Noon-6pm on Sundays. The Easter Bunny takes a carrot break from 3-3:30 daily. If you’re looking for some live music this weekend, there is plenty to be found in Lafayette-West Lafayette! Dan Whitaker & The Shinebenders from Chicago will be playing a show at American Legion Post 492 on this Saturday. The show starts at 7PM and is FREE to the public. You also don’t want to miss out on the lasagna being served from 4-6PM. Song writer, guitarist, and singer Dan Whitaker created the Shinebenders to convey his songs in the beloved format formerly known as country. The group has been around since 2004, where they got started in Chicago and now have the chance to travel all throughout the midwest! The Shinebenders include fellow Chicago music veterans Tom Mioducki on 27336196_1621175467947831_6395004929427890563_nacoustic guitar and vocals, Earl “T-Bone” Powers on upright bass and Eric “Chase” Niffenegger on drums. Their latest album, Anything You Wanted To, was recorded by Mike Hagler at Kingsize Soundlabs in Chicago and released Fall 2017. The album brings together western swing, rock and roll, country-jazz and hillbilly songs to create DWSB’s one-of-a-kind sound. Weekend Update: Heirloom Seed Library Resource & Evening of Romance

This Saturday, February 10th, from 1-3pm is the Grand Opening of Heirloom Seed Library Resource at The Farm at Prophetstown State Park. It is free to the public! Seed library patrons can choose DSCN2161from hundreds of varieties of heirloom seeds, some of which are organic.  Seeds are free, and seed saving instructions are available.  While seed library patrons are not required to donate back saved seeds, it is encouraged so the library can continue into the future. The seed library opens this weekend and will then be open during the Farm’s regular winter hours Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10-4 p.m. Celebrate the magic of a seed and know the pleasure of growing your own garden!

 

For an early Valentines’ Day celebration on Saturday, join the performance of the Purdue Jazz Band at Purdue’s Marriott Hall. This beautiful building is home to the school’s School of Hospitality and Tourism Management. The “Evening of Romance” begins at 8pm and goes Jazz 2until 10pm. Tickets are available here. Please have your tickets printed for entry into the event. Doors open at 7:15, where hors d’oeuvre and dessert buffet will be served. This weekend is packed with chances to check out live music. This Friday at the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette — Friday Night Live!! At the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette: Art! The museum comes to life with musical performances. More live music at the Delphi Opera House this weekend! The Time Travelers have been entertaining for over 20 years. Great singing voices and musicianship allow them to cover a tremendous variety of classic rock songs from the early days to the present. In addition to great guitar playing, the secret weapon is “the flute”. Audiences visibly take notice when they hear the familiar melodies backed up by a powerhouse rhythm section. Lafayette Ballet presents The Nutcracker, the complete ballet for the 29th year. Featuring the talented cast of 40 talented dancers, guest artists, amazing costumes and sets, and the glorious Tchaikovsky score. Looking for a unique way to spend this weekend? Warm up with some exciting sword fighting! Amtgard is a sort of sword fighting reenactment, where people of all ages (with parental approval for minors) can come out and have a good time. There’s fighting and fancy outfits, tournaments, crafting, and occasionally feasting all for free. These reenactments occur every weekend at Tapawingo Park! This Friday, July 18, is a double whammy of a Friday, Third Friday & Gallery Walk! Third Friday is where several downtown Lafayette businesses stay open late and feature specials for children and adults, plus there is a Gallery Walk. Take a leisurely stroll from one Gallery Walk location to the next, where artwork, music and occasional complimentary beverages or hors d’oeuvres may be sampled.

This weekend features many gallery receptions! The reception for Flora Graphis, Mixed Media by Craig Martin, A Pressing Matter and Other Challenges, Print/ Mixed Media by Tuesday Night Inkers & Looking into Faces from the Past, Photography and Painting by Daniel Driggs and Dwayne Daehler is taking place at the Tippecanoe Arts Federation on Friday evening. Artists’ Own presents the Objects of Circumstance, Chance, Life, Work, and Play by Al Knight and Dwayne Daehler reception also on Friday evening.
