Lafayette Ballet presents The Nutcracker, the complete ballet for the 29th year. Looking for a unique way to spend this weekend? Warm up with some exciting sword fighting! Amtgard is a sort of sword fighting reenactment, where people of all ages (with parental approval for minors) can come out and have a good time. There’s fighting and fancy outfits, tournaments, crafting, and occasionally feasting all for free. These reenactments occur every weekend at Tapawingo Park! You’ve heard him on the Bob & Tom Show…now here’s your chance to see him live at the Long Center for the Performing Arts! Heywood Banks is simply one-of-a-kind, almost impossible to describe, with a style his very own. Equal parts genius and buffoon, this songwriter-comic-singer-poet-musician has become a cult hero and a pop icon, with a show that appeals to college students, businessmen, yuppies, rednecks, punks, kids or your grandmother. Heywood intersperses his humorous observations of life with twisted, inventive, bizarre songs, sung and played in a variety of styles, from folk, to country to rock to pop, and way beyond. Come laugh until it hurts. Please note: Wacky Heywood costumes welcomed!

More artistic events abound this weekend! On Sunday, January 15, enjoy the beauty of music at the Tippecanoe Chamber Music Society (TCMS) Concert at Purdue’s Fowler Hall. Celebrate the vision & artistry of the TCMS Founders. TCMS is 20 years old and they are celebrating the two people who founded the organization, Greg Kostraba and Konstantin Jakimow. Greg, Konstantin and the Sylvan Trio will perform music by Schumann, Martinu and Muczynski.

Take a step back in time and revisit the days of the early settlers at the Wabash & Erie Canal this Saturday, August 13 during Old Settlers Day.  Experience history, adventure and pure summer fun at the Wabash and Erie Canal Interpretive Center. This attraction, 20 minutes north east of Lafayette-West Lafayette, offers an adventure for the whole family. Tour the museum, ride the canal boat, hike the 10-mile trail system, and explore the pioneer village.

Saturday evening from 6-10pm, join in family fun at Mosey Down Main Street, a series of street celebrations brought to you by the local artistic community. Volunteers, downtown business owners, artists and musicians come together once a month from May through September to offer a free family friendly event that takes place right down the center of Main Street in downtown Lafayette. Enjoy three stages of music, outdoor food, beer and wine sales as well as street performers, sidewalk chalk and handmade Hula hoops, Drum circles and DJ’s, belly dancers, balloon animals and more.

This Friday, February 12, enjoy Romance and a good cause with the Almost Home Humane Society’s “Spay-Ghetti and No Meatballs” Valentine’s Dinner. The dinner is all-you-can-eat spaghetti and meatballs. The event will be held at the Lahr Atrium connected to the Knickerbocker. Animal themed movies will be played all night to set the mood, and live music, dancing and wine sales to benefits the pets will follow.

HTM 492 cordially invites you to join them on Friday, February 12 for a special Valentines Dinner.  Enjoy a fabulous meal of six courses and six wines prepared and served by the students of the Advanced Food Service Management Class in the beautiful John Purdue Room located in Marriott Hall on the Purdue University Campus.

Together you can draw, paint a canvas, or even propose in plaster at the “Painting with your Valentine” event at the Morton Center.

Stop by the Haan Mansion Museum of Indiana Art after dinner and enjoy wine and dessert in a romantic and relaxing setting and stroll through the mansion’s amazing display of Indiana art and ceramics during Sweet on ART. Join in an evening of wine, music and chocolate on February 13 anytime from 7 to 10 pm. Enjoy the music of Indiana’s own Cole Porter, performed by the Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette. A glass of wine, a decadent dessert and tempting chocolate treats all add to your enjoyment of this special evening.

Celebrate the perfect Valentine’s Day wrapped up in a single event during Valentine’s Cinema, Chocolate and Cheers at the Delphi Opera House on February 13! Film historian Eric Grayson will offer history of the art form and commentary on selected film.

FEBRUARY 5

  • Swing Dance at France A. Cardova Recreational Sports Center- Partnering with Purdue Night Train Swing Dance Club, live jazz music will accompany instructions and dancing at the feature gym in the France A. Córdova Recreational Sports Center on Purdue University’s campus. Put on your dancing shoes to enjoy swinging jazz performed by American Music Repertory Ensemble, Jazz Lab Band and Concert Jazz Band at this event.
  • The annual Lollipop Concert is a fun-filled evening for the entire family! Join the LSO for an engaging and interactive experience with real, live orchestral instruments at our Instrument Petting Zoo! They are rosin’ up the bows so you can take a shot at the violin and the cello. Don’t forget to put on your jazz hands and try out the saxophone, talk with some brass players, and make beautiful music! Stay for the LSO’s performance of “Music, Music, Everywhere!” from Richman’s Picardy Penguin Series, and learn how music is part of our everyday lives.
  • Dare to Bear (Polar Bear Skate Night) at Riverside Skating Center – Put on your swim suit and skate! Cocoa and pizza provided while supplies last.
  • Nicky Rood in Concert at Delphi Opera House – Country singer, songwriter and piano player Nicky Rood will perform her brand of country music at Delphi Opera House. Rood divides her time between West Lafayette and Nashville, Tennesee.

FEBRUARY 6

  • Harpeth Rising at Carnahan Hall – Flowing through the heart of Tennessee, the Harpeth River carries ancestral culture on its currents—from Native American earthwork mounds of centuries past to anecdotal stories of the antebellum era, from the birth of bluegrass to the contemporary Nashville sound that floats downstream. Like the river for which it’s named, self-styled “chambergrass” trio Harpeth Rising is similarly suffused with unforgettable culture and unexpected dynamics.
  • China Art Gallery is hosting the Chinese Spring Festival. This includes an exhibit of Chinese antiques and arts, artists are going to show their arts and do Chinese water color painting and calligraphy on site and also explain some Chinese tradition and culture.
  • Howl with the wolves at Wolf Park during Wolf How Night!

FEBRUARY 5 & 6

  • The Rainmaker at Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette. Watch as a man claims to be a “rainmaker,” and rain does come, and so does love.

After shopping your heart away, on Sunday, November 9, take part in the Battle of Tippecanoe Annual Commemoration. On November 7th, 1811, William Henry Harrison’s troops and the warriors of Prophetstown engaged in the famous Battle of Tippecanoe. This event, significant in the history of Indiana and the United States, is remembered each year by the Tippecanoe County Historical Association with special programs to help tell the story of the battle and to honor those who fought. This year, on Sunday November 9th from 10:00 to 5:00, to commemorate the battle, the special theme will be honoring American Veterans. A living history military encampment will be set up on the grounds of the park to showcase veterans from American conflicts throughout time. At 1:00 pm, a flag ceremony and wreath laying will be held at the monument. This event is free and open to the public.

Enjoy a night of laughter and camaraderie at the Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette this Friday, October 31 and Saturday, November 1 during the play, The Dixie Swim Club. Five Southern women, whose friendships began many years ago on their college swim team, set aside a long weekend every August to recharge those relationships. Free from husbands, kids and jobs, they meet at the same beach cottage on North Carolina’s Outer Banks to catch up, laugh and meddle in each other’s lives. The Dixie Swim Club focuses on four of those weekends and spans a period of thirty-three years. Visitors will laugh at this hilarious and touching comedy about friendships that last forever.

It’s the event we have been waiting for all fall season; the Indiana Ceramics Celebration at the Haan Mansion Museum of Indiana Art on Saturday, November 1 and Sunday, November 2. An amazing array of ceramics will be displayed, including about 50 pieces over 20 inches and several more over 4 feet tall. There’s a huge variety of ceramic forms, including tables, a rocking chair, a saddle, figural work, buildings, and much more. You’ll find teapots, platters, and assorted vessels in a wide array of styles. Featured artists include Marvin Bartel, Bing Davis, George Debikey, Lenny Dowhie, Scott Frankenberger, David Gamble, Bill Griffith, Dick Hay, Bill Kremer, Dick Lehman, Les Miley and many other nationally known artists with Indiana connections. Glass works by Lisa Pelo, Sharon Owens and Kokomo Opalescent Glass are also part of the exhibition. Deceased potters represented in the collection include Laura Fry, Karl Martz, The Overbeck sisters, Richard Peeler, Paul Soldner, Richard Tuck and others. Works by important Japanese potters (some of whom are Japanese Living National Treasures) who influenced the work of current clay artists will also be shown.

Weekend Update: Wolf Park Annual Holiday Party & Old Fashioned Christmas at the Canal

(THIS EVENT HAS NOW BEEN RESCHEDULED FOR DECEMBER 21 due to Winter Weather.) Santa and his Elves will arrive on the Purdue Boilermaker Special Train!   Where?  When?  At the Wolf Park Annual 1460136_10151867853511589_297707635_nHoliday Party, this Saturday, December 14 from 1-4pm!  Everyone (kids and adults!) is invited to watch as the wolves and foxes receive their specially decorated trees donated by Matterns Pine Ridge Nursery. The tree will be covered with edible treats the wolves enjoy, such as hot dogs, spam, and spaghetti. Watch the other Wolf Park animals as they open their presents filled with special treats! Children are invited to help put food ornaments on the wolves’ tree starting at 1:00 pm. Following the presentation of the tree for the wolves, children are invited to go indoors and see Santa, who will be giving out gifts and taking requests. There will be guided tours throughout the afternoon, and warm drinks for all. It will be an afternoon of great holiday fun you cannot miss!

On Saturday, December 14, and Sunday, December 15, get into the holiday spirit at the Old Fashioned Christmas at the Canal in Delphi, Indiana.  Meet Santa Claus, enjoy live artisan demonstrations throughout Pioneer Village, with wares will be for sale (there will be 20 vendors), and do not miss out on eating homemade cookies and hot apple dumplings, topped with ice cream!  Celebrate the season as you wonder through Pioneer Village from days past and listen to music being played all weekend long.

This weekend is Christmas!  Many people will be spending the holiday with their families eating homemade food, visiting with relatives, and children will be awaiting presents from Santa.  It is a time to rejoice and have fun!

The holidays bring special decorations and folks brighten homes with bright lights.  Take a drive this weekend along Historic Ninth Street Hill in Lafayette to find over 500 candles lining the streets of historic homes.  It is a site of bright splendor!

In Battle Ground, Indiana, a local holiday tradition; Christmas on Greenview Drive, which began a few years ago in the River Bluff subdivision, is taking place again this year!  Thousands of lights are set to music!  Visitors pull up in their cars and can tune their radio to 88.1 and experience the colors of the holiday!  Donations are accepted and passed along to local charities.  This event will give visitors a memory to last a lifetime!  Guess exactly how many lights are displayed at this fantastical event??
