Late nights, local beers, fun cocktails, killer food and an inviting atmosphere. What else could you ask for? The Black Sparrow is all that and more! One of my absolutely favorite hangout spots is located in the heart of downtown Lafayette.

The Sparrow is open 11am-3pm Monday through Friday, Saturday and Sunday 5pm-3am. Beers on tap are forever changing to something new and exciting I can almost guarantee you have never tried. Food is always solid. The small plates are a great snack for any time while the nightly specials are always unique. Live music occurs on a pretty regular basis as well. They always bring in great local talent that you would be crazy to miss.

2 Black Sparrow 2016I’m going to let you in on a little secret that pains me to share. The Black Sparrow opens for brunch on Sunday mornings on the last weekend of every month. Each month features a different type of cuisine. 10am is the start time, but there is always a line around the block so get there early if you want a seat!

For some reason my friends and I always gravitate to the Black Sparrow as our go to late night hangout. You will just have to experience this for yourself!

It’s Labor Day! Check Out Our App!

What is Labor Day? The U.S. Department of Labor states it is the following, “Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.” To me, this day means we work hard all year long, and our country is thanking us with a vacation day to get out and have fun!

Out To Lunch Diving Divas Visit La Hacienda

Bar managerMargaritasHow do you set your Mexican restaurant apart from the others? How about a tequila bar with 79 distinct tequilas, most 100% agave, differentiated by age and processing! Tequila tastings are now a thing in this town.  The Dining Divas, plus intern Bryce, decided to try the made-from-scratch margaritas upon the recommendation of bar manager Braden. Margy tried the mango margarita which was sweet and fruity, lovely to look at, and garnished with orange instead of lime.  “Refreshing!”  Bev and Bryce went the classic route with the house margarita on the rocks.  “Really good!” Kay had the frozen Texas margarita which differed from the house version by addition of a higher end Triple Sec.  “Yum!”  Jo passed–someone has to keep order!

Manager Juan Carlos Fuentes-Milan reported that this West Lafayette location is the seventh La Hacienda; the others are in greater Indianapolis.  Proximity to Purdue made this the perfect spot to try out their first tequila bar.

Out to Lunch GroupWe enjoyed chips with salsa, guacamole, and queso, all with a nice kick, with our margaritas.

The décor is wildly festive and chock full of custom-made benches and tables. The owners saved the beautiful hand-made tiles that were part of an earlier restaurant on site.  We ate in the bar which boasts 5 televisions and Braden was very helpful to us in making our selections. Our food came out quickly after we ordered, making this a good choice for working people with limited time.

Quesadilla Del Mar

Quesadilla Del Mar

Kay, our seafood specialist, had quesadilla del mar ($10.99) with guacamole salad.  This consisted of a generous portion of shrimp, scallops, crab, cheese, onions, green peppers, and mushrooms stuffed into a large flour tortilla with queso on top.  She was pleased that there was lots of seafood, perfectly grilled, and a large portion of guacamole, tomatoes, and lettuce on the side.  Kay says, “I’d happily have this again!  La Hacienda has a large selection of seafood on the menu and they are justifiably proud of their seafood dishes.”

Bev had arroz texano ($10.99), a combination of steak, grilled chicken, shrimp, and rice.  The steak and chicken were tender and the shrimp were fatties.  This was a substantial meal so some of it went into a to-go box and provided lunch the next day.arroz texano

Jo’s vegetarian fajitas ($11.99) were an ideal meal for a vegetarian low-carb diet– a hard to find commodity.  Grilled mixed vegetables were served with tortillas, guacamole, sour cream, and pico de gallo.  Jo loves hot vegetable salads, so mixed the fajitas and salad for a perfect meal.

Bryce ordered tacos de carnitas, which were 3 corn tortillas stuffed with shredded pork served with pico de gallo and rice.  Bryce declared them really good, very fresh. He said, “Carnitas are often dry, but these aren’t! And the pico has a nice kick.”

Veggie tacos and enchiladas

Veggie tacos and enchiladas

Margy’s combination #1 ($8.99) consisted of one taco and 2 enchiladas, all vegetarian, served with beans and rice.  This dish was good, familiar and not too hot.  It would be a good choice for someone who doesn’t like spicy food.

Manager Juan Carlos says business has been brisk since La Hacienda opened at this site and judging from our experience, we’re not surprised.  If you stand in the middle of Howard Street (which we don’t really recommend), you can hear the music of Mexico coming from La Hacienda and the music of Ireland coming from Nine Irish Brothers. And then you know you must be in West Lafayette—the home of great food from around the world!

The Dining Divas; Out to Lunch on the Road Less Traveled consist of:

Kay Conner, photographer, seafood superstar
Margy Deverall, author of Lafayette articles, dedicated vegetarian
Beverly Shaw, author of West Lafayette articles, bring on the beef (or chicken or pork)
Jo Wade, founder of this food blog, very veggie

Midwest Hospitality Encompasses Scotty’s Brewhouse, West Lafayette

Loaded BBQ Nachos

Loaded BBQ Nachos

2 Great Cities, 1 Great University “Midwest Hospitality”.  To experience “Midwest Hospitality” at its finest, visit Scotty’s Brewhouse for not only fabulous service, but delicious bar food!

Scotty’s Brewhouse holds many special memories in my heart.  I am a graduate of Ball State University, and Scotty’s original restaurant first opened in Muncie, Indiana.  This restaurant/bar was where I met up with friends to hang out, had my first beer, and would take my parents to dine when they visited.  My favorite memory is meeting up with my sister (who is 3 years older and was a senior when I was a freshman) and her friends and listening to their college tales of fun!  Scotty’s is so laid back and relaxing that this location holds the perfect combination of good food and atmosphere to make the night a fun one.

Burger and loaded fries!

When I moved to the Lafayette-West Lafayette area six years ago, I was so excited West Lafayette claims its own Scotty’s Brewhouse!  I would almost say it is becoming an Indiana classic restaurant, where all the great cities in our state can now boast they have one.  I believe the reason they have expanded throughout the state is not only because they have good food, but when you visit this place, you always know you are going to have friendly, Indiana hospitality and service.

Friends eating at Scotty's

Friends eating at Scotty’s

Their menu encompasses everything from burgers (made a million different ways!) to salads to wonderful homemade soups.  A family favorite of ours is their dill chips.  It is the first thing we order every visit.  They have a mo’fo sauce (their signature sauce) they add to many menu options and it adds a kick to the meal that is wonderful.  My husband and I go through stages where we will eat something again and again until we can’t eat it for a year.  At this time Buffalo chicken wraps are our craving and the Mo’Fo Buffalo Chicken Wrap from Scotty’s is amazing!

Living in Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana, one thing we value is customer service and appreciating the times we receive great customer care.  Midwest Hospitality is Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana.  We are  proud of our local restaurants that provide gracious and friendly service. Interested in experiencing and learning about where bacon comes from? Head to Fair Oaks to watch the process of cows being milked, piglets being born, and delicious cheese being created.

Plus, we love the cheese! When you visit Fair Oaks Farms, make sure you don’t miss all the attractions that make it so wonderful.
