Not only is their music enjoyable and entertaining (you’ll find yourself clapping along, tapping your toe, and maybe even dancing a jig before you know what hits you), but their showmanship is outstanding as well. Patrick, Les, and Brian are great people for spending a fun evening of music and craic.

Weekend Update: Tian Jianan Performs and Wolf Howl Nights

Tian

Tian Jianan

Weekend Update! Looking for a fun Indiana weekend getaway? Or do you live in this area and are looking for entertainment close by? Check out the endless possibilities for fun events happening this upcoming weekend in or near Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana.

On January 30, Purdue Convocations is excited to welcome visitors to come and listen to Tian Jianan, a 21-year-old virtuoso from Beijing. Accordions may be among the most misunderstood and unnecessarily maligned instruments known today. But in the hands of an expert, this instrument of great expressive potential reveals the riches of a highly internationalized collection of artists, composers, and traditions. Tian Jianan plays the bayan, a special chromatic-button keyboard accordion developed in Russia, and the international instrument of choice for accordionists performing classical or contemporary classical music. Using a free bass accordion allows for full two-handed counterpoint instead of melodies played with the right hand against predetermined push-button chords in the left. Under Tian’s hands, the bayan is transformed into a structurally complex, robustly symphonic, and emotionally engrossing instrument of astonishing possibilities. Still a student at the Central Conservatory of Music, China’s leading music school. Tian has nonetheless accumulated no fewer than 31 first-place finishes worldwide at competitions in Italy, Germany, Russia, New Zealand, and Canada. At the 2013 Coupe Mondiale, a premier international accordion competition, Tian took the top prize for Best Original Solo Work. Be a part of this evening that is also part of a collection of campus activities in celebration of the Chinese New Year at Purdue.

Fiona & Kanti Howling on the PondIn the mood for outdoor wilderness fun this weekend? Visit Wolf Park in the evening on January 30, and see the animals in a whole new light. As the night falls and the air cools, the wolves get frisky. Guests will have an opportunity to hear a more in-depth discussion of the wolf’s “trademark” behavior — the howl. You will have front row seats to a sing-along as Wolf Park’s expert wolf handlers enter the enclosure and interact with the main pack of wolves. Visitors are encouraged several times during the performance to howl, and will be able to see and hear the wolves return the call.

On Saturday night, make it a date night at the Long Center for the Performing Arts. The Kentucky Opera joins the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra in a concert version of The Marriage of Figaro, an irrelevant romantic comedy. The philandering Count Almaviva plans to sully the marriage of Figaro and the lovely Susanna – but not if they have anything to say about it. Add an uptight Countess, a pubescent pageboy, and music by Mozart and his librettist Da Ponte, and you have a recipe for a delightful evening of light-hearted scandal.

On Friday, February 27, head to Purdue University to listen to the American Music Repertory Ensemble, featuring the music of the Gene Krupa Orchestra and Anita O’Day. Krupa began playing drums professionally in 1927 when he broke into the Chicago scene as a member of “Thelma Terry and Her Playboys,” the first notable co-ed American jazz band to be led by a female musician. He influenced the drum industry by endorsing Slingerland drums’s tom-tomAs with tuneable top and bottom heads and partnering with Armand Zildjian Company to develop the modern hi-hat cymbals. In 1978, Krupa became the first drummer inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame. O’Day broke onto the jazz scene in the late 1930’s as a dynamic vocalist when she was hired to perform at Down Beat editor’s club, Off-Beat. She worked with jazz greats Gene Krupa, Woody Herman, and Stan Kenton. Do not miss this drumming fun night!

Weekend Update! Looking for a fun Indiana weekend getaway? Or do you live in this area and are looking for entertainment close by? Check out the endless possibilities for fun events happening this upcoming weekend in Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana.

June in Indiana equals fishing season! What is better on a nice, warm day than grabbing your fishing pool and heading out for a day on the water fishing and relaxing? This weekend, both Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, June 8, head to Prophetstown State Park for their “Free Fishing Weekend!” Fishing licenses are not required on this special weekend. Some of my best childhood memories are going with my dad every summer on Saturday fishing expeditions. I learned how to get the wily worm to fit on the hook, cast a line and reel in the fish. It was so much fun!

Great Britain is invading our area! The Bach Chorale Singers perform The British Invasion: From Britten to the Bee Gees on Saturday, June 7, at Lafayette Jefferson High School. Enjoy this dynamic cabaret style as you hear the eclectic sounds of music from the U.K. – from Ralph Vaughan Williams, Benjamin Britten and Gilbert & Sullivan to the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Sir Elton John and the Bee Gees. Families will want to come early to enjoy the “Yellow Submarine.”
