Not in the mood to embark on the Black Friday shopping madness of fun? Go local and shop this Saturday during Small Business Saturday. Lafayette-West Lafayette has so many unique, specialty shops that make this day full of shopping glamour. This day is one of my favorite days of the year because our local shop owners have their hand crafted items (many are one of a kind) on sale. My sister, mom, and mother in-law have been recipients of some lovely gifts that I can happily say I purchased at a great price! Plus, with the discounts, I usually purchase a little something for my own household!  For a complete list of shops that are participating, visit the Shop Small Saturday Facebook page.

Have a fabulous weekend of shopping!  And don’t forget to share with us your shopping news.  For a complete list of shops and other fun weekend events, visit www.HomeOfPurdue.com.

Purdue Graduate Gifts

IMG_0184Purdue Commencement is almost upon us! May 13-15, Purdue Grads will make their graduation walk with pride and a wonderful feeling of accomplishment for all of their hard work to successfully graduate from one of the top schools of our nation. A Purdue Graduate can proudly boast this wonderful success as a Purdue degree will lead to so many bright opportunities in his or her future.

Personally, from living in this area and also working with many Purdue students, I always enjoy giving a nice, personalized gift to those who accomplish this amazing achievement. There are so many wonderful local stores that have Purdue gifts that are perfect for making lasting memories.

DSC00824One unique shop is Interior Objects. They have an area that is all Purdue that includes glassware, serving dishes and really neat photo frames. When my brother in-law achieved his Masters from Purdue a few years ago, we bought him a photo frame that had a vintage look. On graduation day, we took his photo and added it to the frame.  He now lives in Washington D.C. and the frame is in on his fireplace mantel!

Looking for a one of a kind gift? Linda Elmore from Something Special creates hand blown glass necklaces. She can make them in pretty much any color, and add braille to them so they can say any message one wants. Last year, one of my dearest friends graduated from Purdue, and I asked Linda to create a gold and black necklace that said “Purdue Pride” on it. My girlfriend was thrilled and shares she wears it all the time!

Gretel’s Fine Gifts is another specialty shop that offers Purdue items. When my husband and I were first married, my in-laws bought us a bunch of Purdue designed dishes (see photo above) from Gretel’s and they have been perfect for hosting big parties. Or even small dinner nights when there is a basketball game on, I will grab the plates to use to cheer on our Boilers!

Vintage! Main Street Mercantile is home to vintage Purdue clothes including dance outfits, baseball uniforms, band outfits, sweatshirts, etc. They have a huge space dedicated to Purdue and is a great shop to find a gift that will make a lasting memory!

IMG_4567If you are looking for a smaller gift item that is sweet and delicious visit Kathy’s Kandies.  She has Purdue themed candy items. One I recommend is the Black and Gold popcorn. It is a small bag of fresh popped popcorn and is a perfect item to add to a graduation bag!

Find the perfect gift this year for your Purdue Graduate!  To visit these shops and other great shopping locations in Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana, visit our website at www.HomeOfPurdue.com.

The Season of Giving is Here: Shop Local!

Interior Objects

Interior Objects

The season of giving is here! The older I get, the more I come to find that I much rather give to others versus receive.  Shopping for others with their happiness in mind and then seeing their surprised reaction to their presents is so very rewarding. This year, don’t travel far for the perfect presents! There are many options right here in Tippecanoe County.

Two Tulips

Two Tulips

For the young cuties in your life, head to Two Tulips for fun gifts. They have recently increased their product line to feature more young children’s clothes and accessories than ever before. Furthermore, they feature the Midwest’s largest collection of piggy banks! Head in and order a custom-made bank to add a personal flair to your gifts. Two Tulips also supplies customers with unique children’s products such as: blankets, backpacks, hooded towels, wooden furniture, and growth charts. Ask about ways you can personalize these items!

Hot House Market

Hot House Market

For the teenagers and young adults in your life, there is a perfect store for gifts of all sorts: Hot House Market! This local gem offers various vintage items for all. Vintage is the latest fad in all aspects of life. This shop offers clothing for men and women, classic shoes, lovely furniture, handmade home décor, bath accessories, record players with vinyl, and so much more! It is always a surprise going in, even on a weekly basis, as the owners are constantly turning over their supply in the store with fun, new items. Their products may be vintage, but they are at excellently priced and have big name brands such as: Coach, Levi’s, Gap, and more.

When shopping for mothers, grandmothers, and the lovely women in your life, there are two stores that stand out to me: Something Special and Grateful Heart Gallery & Gifts. Both of these locally owned art galleries and shops feature some of the most unique items in the area. From handcrafted home décor and art pieces to homemade jewelry, there is always something that is sure to overjoy your loved ones for the holidays. With so many options to pick from, the exquisite local women that manage and create artwork for these stores will be delighted to help you find the perfect gift for your friends and family!

Last but not least, you must shop for the men in your life. Personally, I think men are the hardest to shop for; however, they probably think the same about women. No worries though! I have a store I plan to shop at for all the men’s gifts this season: Interior Objects. When I say that this store has it all, it is no exaggeration. I could very well spend many hours in this store looking at all of the fun and unique products the store has to offer. Christmas time is my favorite season to go to Interior Objects due to their over-the-top seasonal decorations; it is extremely beautiful and enhances the festive spirit. For men, you will be able to find some of the most unique collegiate décor, which is excellent for those passionate Boilermaker fans out there! There is also a large supply of excellent kitchen accessories, home décor, local art, and much more. Are there too many great options to choose from? That’s OK, an indecisive shopper like myself runs into this situation often.

Something Special Custom Necklaces

Something Special Custom Necklaces

Purchase a gift certificate to allow your recipients to return and decide on the perfect gift themself! While you’re here, I suggest looking at the various stationary and cards. From funny to sentimental, come discover the numerous ways to send out Christmas cheer.

Not only is the season full of giving, but it is also packed with quality time spent with friends and family. One of my absolute favorite aspects about this time of year is decorating my place with festive décor to set the mood just right for special gatherings. To prepare for all of the holiday parties coming up, head to Design Nook for the latest trends in exterior and interior design. Design Nook employees go above and beyond and are available for assistance in your next home design project. Speak with professionals to discuss how to design your home like never before!

True Hoosier Hospitality at Blooms & Petals Flower & Gifts

IMG_63832 Great Cities, 1 Great University, “Hoosier Hospitality”. To experience “Hoosier Hospitality” at its finest visit Blooms & Petals Fresh Flower & Gifts, where the flowers are blooming beautifully and the service is exceptional. This local family owned florist has over 75 years of combined experience in the floral industry. They purchase their flowers directly from farms in order to give customers the freshest and longest lasting product!

IMG_6371Is there anything better than walking into a store on a cold, rainy day (well maybe not being out in the cold!) and being instantly greeted with a happy, cheerful smile and welcome. It may be a dreary day, but as soon as you enter Blooms and Petals, sunshine and friendliness await! And the smell of fresh flowers takes all the worries away. I love visiting this store as the owner and her staff are so nice and the store itself is quaint yet filled with fresh flowers and gift items. Blooms & Petals is unique as it is a flower shop but it has more than flowers (although their flowers are beautiful!). They offer gift items such as jewelry, lotions, artwork, holiday decorations and more.

IMG_6379Another item that makes the perfect present is their gift baskets, which have fresh fruit, locally produced edibles, unique items to your taste and the baskets are generous! They even do custom gift shopping for customers upon request. I recently had a friend whose mother passed away and I sent her their “Heartfelt Sympathies Gourmet Basket.” She said it was beautiful and so thoughtful.

Blooms & Petals Fine Flower & Gifts also has large and unique plants from all around the world. Their plants are easy to care for and can be given for any occasion. This was another idea I thought to send to my friend’s who lost her mother, but I opted for the basket instead.

IMG_6374“Hoosier Hospitality.” What does this mean? I (a true Midwesterner born and raised in Indiana) feel that “Hoosier Hospitality” is a friendliness and openness people from this area show to one another and to others from other parts of the states and world.  We wave.  We smile. We say hi. In essence, we are just friendly to everyone. Living in Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana, one thing we value is customer service and appreciating the times we receive great customer care. Hoosier Hospitality is Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana. We are proud of our local businesses, including Blooms & Petals, who provide gracious and friendly service. Congrats to our 2014 Holiday Shopping Giveaway Winner!

We have the winner of our 2014 Holiday Shopping Giveaway Contest worth over $575! Congratulations to Mary Claxton from Lafayette, Indiana.

What is your favorite gift you have given or received during the holiday season? Feel free to share with us the story that goes along with the gift.

Mary shared, “I received the very best gift anyone could possibly get just two days before Thanksgiving. I gave birth to our first child, a beautiful baby girl. My husband was stationed in Viet Nam at the time. My parents, his in-laws, had to telephone the Red Cross, who in turn would inform my husband of the birth of his little daughter. We were both so very happy and excited but were thousands of miles apart for such a wonderful occasion. We wrote to each other every single day for a year. That is how we had to correspond in those days.

Then on Christmas morning of that same year (1968), on a morning television show called The Today Show, was my husband! There he stood in his Army uniform, all the way from Viet Nam, and with a smile on his face, he wished me and his new baby daughter, Sherry Lynn, a “Very Merry Christmas” WOW! what a gift that was! Although he couldn’t be with us that year for Christmas. He certainly “was with us.” and I thanked God for that blessed gift.”

Thanks to all who participated in this latest contest! Stay tuned for our next big contest/package we will be hosting early 2015.
