Start your weekend off right and head to Nine Irish Brothers in Lafayette to listen to the band, Highland Reign perform on Friday, March 3. This Scots-American folk rock band from Indianapolis, takes traditional Celtic tunes and breathes a new (rocking) life into them. With over 10,000 CD’s of their most recent release, “Carry On,” Highland Reign has built a reputation for their trademark upbeat vocals, blazing fiddle, catchy lyrics, and wailing bagpipes and guitars. Not only is their music enjoyable and entertaining (you’ll find yourself clapping along, tapping your toe, and maybe even dancing a jig before you know what hits you), but their showmanship is outstanding as well. Patrick, Les, and Brian are great people for spending a fun evening of music and craic.

More musical entertainment take place on Sunday, March 5. Head to Purdue University for the Brahms Fest, a Tippecanoe Chamber Music Society concert. ISO’s Principal Clarinetist David Bellman and members of the Ronen Ensemble will perform Brahms’ Clarinet Quintet Op.115. The DePauw Trio will share the program performing Brahms’ B major Trio for piano, violin and cello.

Weekend Update: Free Fishing & Great Britain Invades!

Fishing!

June in Indiana equals fishing season! What is better on a nice, warm day than grabbing your fishing pool and heading out for a day on the water fishing and relaxing? This weekend, both Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, June 8, head to Prophetstown State Park for their “Free Fishing Weekend!” Fishing licenses are not required on this special weekend. Some of my best childhood memories are going with my dad every summer on Saturday fishing expeditions. I learned how to get the wily worm to fit on the hook, cast a line and reel in the fish. It was so much fun!

Great Britain is invading our area! The Bach Chorale Singers perform The British Invasion: From Britten to the Bee Gees on Saturday, June 7, at Lafayette Jefferson High School. Enjoy this dynamic cabaret style as you hear the eclectic sounds of music from the U.K. – from Ralph Vaughan Williams, Benjamin Britten and Gilbert & Sullivan to the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Sir Elton John and the Bee Gees. Families will want to come early to enjoy the “Yellow Submarine.”

Music & Entertainment Weekend Update: Lucky Plush & Fatoumata Diawara

Cinderbox

Weekend Update!  It’s a music and performing arts weekend in Lafayette-West Lafayette!  Whether you live in this area or traveling from afar there are endless possibilities for fun events happening this upcoming weekend in Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana.

Is “reality TV” really real? How much is scripted? How much is truly spontaneous? How can you tell? Chicago-based dance theatre company Lucky Plush dives headlong into the question with Cinderbox 2.0, “a visually, kinetically, sonically and intellectually dazzling piece of dance theater” (Chicago Sun Times). Purdue Convocations presents Lucky Plush this Friday, February 7, at Loeb Playhouse.  In 2007, Lucky Plush artistic director Julia Rhoads created the distinctive and critically acclaimed world of Cinderbox 18 to explore the comedy and anxiety created by our media’s voyeuristic approach to “reality.” Now, fast-forward to 2014, where such shows haven’t faded away but rather multiplied, so Rhoads has rebooted her investigations with Cinderbox 2.0. In a performance that blurs the distinctions of dance and theatre, the observer and the observed, and the scripted and the off-the-cuff, Rhoads has created a fresh and unflinching, yet deeply comical, view of the virtuosity and failure we simultaneously love and hate.

afrique-cest-chic-150x150Looking for more entertainment this weekend?  On Friday, February 8, head to the Lafayette Theatre for Fatoumata Diawara to enjoy the sounds of song to promote political change and human rights. The power of “three chords and a guitar” has long been celebrated for its persuasive potential, and 31-year-old singer and guitarist Fatoumata Diawara (or “Fatou,” for short) joins that great tradition, lifting the human spirit out of war-torn Mali. Singing in Bambara, the principal dialect of southern Mali, Fatou wraps messages of support for women, orphaned children, and the cessation of war inside songs of extraordinary beauty and rhythmic delight that easily transcend worldwide language barriers.

It’s one of my favorite childhood favorite stories and is a classic, “Charlotte’s Web”!  The Civic Youth Theatre Present: “Charlotte’s Web” this weekend, Friday, November 15 through Sunday, November 17. The Children’s Literature Association named this “the best American children’s book of the past two hundred years.”  Adapted for the stage by Joseph Robinette, all the enchanting characters are here:  Wilbur, the irresistible young pig who desperately wants to avoid the butcher, Fern, Templeton, the Zuckerman family, the Arables, and, most of all, the extraordinary spider, Charlotte, who proves to be “a true friend and a good writer.” Determined to save Wilbur, Charlotte begins her campaign with the “miracle” of her web in which she writes, “Some pig.” It’s the beginning of a victorious campaign, which ultimately ends with the now-safe Wilbur doing what is most important to Charlotte.

Live on stage, this Saturday, November 16, is the artist, Jonathan Richman, presented by Friends of Bob!  His music embodies timeless qualities of humanity, optimism, emotional insight and a boundless sense of humor. Over the years, Jonathan’s music has absorbed a multitude of influences, from doo-wop to country to a variety of international styles, without sacrificing this effervescent personality.  Check out his performance at Lafayette Brewing Company for a night of great music, humor and delicious food!
