Top Purdue Dining at Marriott Hall

Do you ever find yourself on campus wanting a nice place to eat in a relaxing, comfortable environment? Marriott Hall may be your new favorite spot. Marriott Hall is home to the students of Hospitality and Tourism Management, housing a sit down restaurant, a bistro quick service, a coffee shop and areas to study all within one academic building. The  building is adorned with tall windows, bringing in tons of natural light in the big open atrium area. During the week, you’ll find students and faculty studying in the atrium, grabbing a bite from the Boiler Bistro or a coffee from Lavazza.

Within Marriott Hall, you can dine or enjoy a variety of things.

  • The John Purdue Room
  • Boiler Bistro (with Urban Belly pop-up until the end of April)
  • Lavazza Coffee
  • Seating in the atrium
  • Upstairs lounging

If you are looking for a sit down restaurant

The John Purdue Room offers dining during both lunch and dinner, but make sure to reserve a spot just in case! The JPR acts as a part of a lab for students in the  Purdue hospitality program; certain times during the year they will offer cuisine special to a country that the students specially prepare. You can enjoy wine and beer there as well.

If you are looking for a quick bite to eat

The Boiler Bistro is a Marriott Hall classic. They offer everything from burgers, a daily special and soups for a reasonable price. This semester, Urban Belly (a Chicago based ramen shop) is featured in the bistro until late April.

If you are in need of a pick-me-up

Lavazza is a quick coffee shop right next to the atrium within Marriott Hall that offers everything from hot coffee to gelato. My favorite thing to get from Lavazza is an iced chai with non-dairy milk and sometimes I’ll snag a donut as well!

If you are looking for a new place to study on campus

As soon as you walk inside of Marriott Hall, you will find a wide range of seating to enjoy your coffee, catch up with a friend or study for your next exam. The windows are open and bright, bringing in a lot of natural light during the day. They also offer upstairs seating if the atrium is too full!

If you want to try a new cuisine on campus

Urban Belly, a Chicao based ramen shop, is featured at the Boiler Bistro until late April. They offer a select menu at the Bistro but it is worth a try. Urban Belly has brought three ramen options and three dumpling options to Purdue, both having vegetarian options as well.

Special Dinner – Bacon Crab cakes and Mac N Cheese!

IMG_7671We all know most of the restaurants on Purdue’s campus, but one may come as a surprise to many. Marriott Hall may seem like just a normal classroom-style building, but it houses the Hospitality and Tourism Management students. Their classrooms are not just desks and whiteboards!

The John Purdue Room, a full-service, student run restaurant is housed in Marriott Hall. During an HTM student’s education they are required to take two different restaurant labs during their time at Purdue. They are put into roles that stretch their learning of the restaurant business; from mangers to servers to cooks to dishwashers.

The day-time lab runs from 8:30am-2:50pm. This time frame preps for lunch, serves lunch and cleans up before the next shift begins. During these seven hours’ students rotate from front of house servers, managers, and cooks.

Lunch is served from 11:00am-1:00pm, Tuesday through Friday, so this makes the perfect place to bring a guest to show off all the fine things Purdue has to offer. Here they can get a light salad, sandwich, or a more filling entrée. Make sure to try the John Purdue Plate since it is always changing and you get to try different items every time you go back.

The night time lab runs from 3:00-9:50pm. During this lab, students are given more responsibility since they know the basics of the restaurant and how it should be run. Every week a front of house and back of house manager are picked to run the “staff.” They also are in charge of designing and preparing a three-course special that is served throughout the week.

Dinner is served from 5:00-7:30pm, Tuesday-Thursday, but make sure to call in advance because seating is limited. The menu consists of some heartier meals like slow braised beef short ribs and crispy fried buttermilk chicken. Each menu item is also paired with a wine for your convenience. Make sure to try starting off with the creamy potato soup, then getting the Maple Leaf Farms house made duck pasta for your entrée and then finishing with one of their amazing daily desserts!

Check out their Facebook to see their many events that they hold as well for an extra special date night!

Perfect Mixture of Class and Casual, the John Purdue Room

DSCN1138The perfect mixture of class and casual, the John Purdue Room is a must for your dining bucket list! With the John Purdue Room being a classroom setting, it is often overlooked as a restaurant; however, it is one of the finest in West Lafayette! Located within Marriott Hall on Purdue’s campus, the nationally renowned Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM) students run the restaurant with many of them learning the dining world for the very first time. However, what better way for a customer to experience a restaurant than from students who study the hospitality industry every single day and are the future for this field!

Diners can watch their food being prepared!

Diners can watch their food being prepared!

As a student myself in HTM, I can ensure to everyone that there is a large amount of effort and care put into each and every dish that comes out of JPR. Students are in HTM for a reason; we sincerely care about delivering excellent service to others and thoroughly enjoy providing irreplaceable experiences to all.  Whether you’re feeling lunch or dinner, the John Purdue Room is open for both meals throughout the school year with a new menu each semester.

The lunch option features students who are experiencing the lab for the first time. The majority of the students are sophomore and junior status. They are introduced to creating dishes in mass quantities, different types of equipment, and how to properly serve diners. If coming in for lunch, please keep in mind that many of these students are learning for the very first time, and they may be nervous. However, they work diligently to give the best possible service they can and take full advantage of the opportunity to learn. The practice you, as the customer, are providing the students helps them grow more towards their professional career. Leave a comment and grade on the comment cards so the students know how they did for the day!

DSCN1137Advanced senior level HTM students manage the dinner portion. The guests will experience a more upscale dining atmosphere with high-quality food surrounded by skilled students. The seniors are introduced to managerial experience in a fast paced restaurant environment and sharpen their skills in areas such as marketing, dish creation, menu engineering, and more. Ask your waiter or waitress about the special created personally by the students; it changes daily! Again, let the students know how they did. We are not able to improve ourselves without criticism from the most important part of the industry, our customers.

The John Purdue Room is even open this summer for their lunch menu! Opening June 22 and carrying on through July 30, the summer students will offer a brand new menu with the most contemporary dishes in the restaurant industry, Monday-Thursday, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. I will be working there myself this summer for my senior lab and encourage you all to come out and support my fellow students and I as we work hard to create an innovative menu with the highest quality of service. We appreciate the opportunity to learn and sharpen our skills to prepare for our future careers. We won’t disappoint!

IMG_5312If you’re looking for a quicker meal with cheaper prices, check out the options available right outside the doors of the John Purdue Room within the Marriott Hall Atrium. For a quick lunch, the Boiler Bistro is open for a quick bite to eat with a variety of options, featuring a new daily special every single day. Coffee is also available at LavAzza Coffee Shop to provide an excellent start to your morning or give you a pick-me-up later on throughout the day. There are many gourmet coffee options produced with care.

IMG_5321The relaxing, inviting ambiance added with students who are passionate about the field that strive for dining excellence is the perfect equation for an experience that will leave you wanting to come back for more. Not only do you obtain a high quality meal with exquisite service, but you also are helping students expand their knowledge and gain more real life experience to prepare them for what is to come in their successful futures. Your presence is greatly appreciated, and the service you receive in return reflects that. Call in to make reservations at (765) 494-6845, but walk-ins are always welcome! On-the-go options are also made available. I hope to see you this summer!

John Purdue Room Bistro

John Purdue Room (Photo taken 1 week before January 17 Opening at new Marriott Hall location)

2 Great Cities, 1 Great University, Be a Tourist in Your Own Backyard!  Vacation, Relaxation, Fun; one image that comes into our heads is sand, sun and water.  Locals travel south to find their peace and quiet, while adventure, history, the arts and entertainment, and more, can be found in our own backyard.   Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana, is home to Purdue University which features a student managed, casual fine dining restaurant, John Purdue Room Bistro.

Looking for delicious, homemade food, exemplary service and an authentic, college experience?  You can get this and more at John Purdue Room Bistro.  This restaurant is where Purdue students are expected to manage, market, develop daily specials, produce, execute, and evaluate a casual fine dining experience.  For locals, visitors and students attending Purdue University, it is an opportunity to eat locally produced cuisine, dine in a brand new, state-of-the-art restaurant where diners can watch students prep and prepare the elegant entrees and enjoy dining in the center of a nationally known college, Purdue University.

One initiative I personally enjoy about John Purdue Room Bistro is its involvement in sustainable agriculture.  This past year the College of Agriculture and the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management collaborated to develop a student-run farming initiative.  Its menu uses these local agricultural products produced on a five acre farm managed by Purdue students.  It gives diners a true Midwest local foods experience.  And nothing beats Midwest cuisine!!

John Purdue Room Bistro is located at the brand new state-of-the-art facility, Marriott Hall, at Purdue University.  Its official opening date in this new location is tomorrow, Tuesday, January 17, 2012.  Marriott Hall not only houses this wonderful dining room, but also a quick service dining restaurant and world renowned coffee shop, Lavazza Expression Coffee Shop.  Lavazza Expression offers made to order, decadent coffee and fresh, rich gelato!
