It’s National Donut Day! Enjoy a Fresh Donut at Mary Lou Donuts!

IMG_2047Lafayette-West Lafayette is home to delicious dining, interesting attractions and shops, enticing events and home away from home lodging! Today we are celebrating donuts and are making a special trip to a local favorite, Mary Lou Donuts. This donut shop offers fresh, delicious donuts that can be purchased via counter service, carry-out and/or drive-thru!

Mary Lou Donuts is a Lafayette staple in the donut business. They offer every donut imaginable from the bear claw to coconut crunch to cream horns. This donut shop has been a breakfast favorite of my family’s since I was a little girl.  I now have a little one and a trip to Mary Lou’s is a special treat for our family.

Last year, my sister and her family moved back to Indiana from Arizona. My parents hosted them for a few weeks, and every weekend I would take a box of donuts up to Chalmers where they live. It was so comical and fun to watch as everyone ran around the kitchen table to pick and grab their favorite donut. My two older nephews would jump up and down with excitement on their selections. It is crazy what food will do to one’s family!

What is your favorite donut? Are you heading to your favorite donut shop today to celebrate? Please share!!

Downtown Dine: Spurlock’s Offers Burgers, Drinks, & More

Looking for a great burger, drink, onion rings and more?  Visitor Information Specialist, Marlene, shares thoughts on her visit(s) to this restaurant and pub.

Spurlock’s is located at 721 Main Street in downtown Lafayette. It is in the perfect location if you are walking around the downtown area and want to stop in for lunch, dinner, or just a drink. It’s a small restaurant/bar and it has good food and excellent service.  When you walk into Spurlock’s, it is welcoming. You are invited to choose a seat anywhere you like.

The menu has something for everyone including different flavors of wings, starters, salads, steaks, seafood, pasta, burgers, wraps, sandwiches, and soups. The fried cheese cubes with marinara are one of my favorites.

I love burgers with blue cheese, so needless to say I ordered the Ol’ Blue Burger with a side of handmade potatophoto-9 chips. We also ordered the Black & Gold burger with onion rings. The bartender mentioned that they have the best onion rings in town and I certainly agree.

The prices at Spurlock’s are very reasonable. We were able to have dinner for two for well under $20.  They have $5 daily specials Monday thru Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. They also have a full bar with a nice drink selection.

National Lasagna Day – Taste Buds Soar at La Scala

IMG_1855It’s National Lasagna Day and Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana, is home to local restaurant, La Scala, where their homemade Italian cuisine can make your taste buds say “thank you”.

IMG_1857What is your favorite Italian food? Are you a red sauce or white sauce person?  Odd question, I know, but my friends and I always describe ourselves by the foods we eat.  I am usually a white sauce person, but at La Scala I love their rich marinara.  My family are creatures of habit and we always start our meal with their hand breaded ravioli filled with white, creamy ricotta in a bed of  their tasty marinara and topped with a splash of their specialty basil pesto.  Then it is onto entree time and this is the part of the meal where I am conflicted. Do I choose their gnocchi (potato and pasta dumplings) created three special ways or does their classic meat lasagna made with their Napolitania (tomato cream) sauce, giant ravioli filled with spinach and cheese and finished in their basil pesto cream sauce, win the day?  Do I have your taste buds watering yet?  Their menu has a limitless selection of homemade, “Farm to Fork”, options.  I recommend going in a group, so you can taste and share all the delectable delights.  Their dessert menu also offers Italian favorites; tiramisu, directly imported from Italy, canolis and more!

IMG_0437La Scala has a majestic, outdoor eating area.  It is the perfect setting for a relaxing night where guests can eat gourmet food, drink fabulous cocktails, share fun stories with friends and family, while overlooking Lafayette’s beautiful 19th century courthouse.  You will be served food created by owner and Chef Francisco “Paco” Serrano.  This restaurant is locally and family owned, and diners can tell how they put all their passion into creating not only a comforting atmosphere, but into their hand crafted dishes.

Co-worker, Lisa, shared, “My girlfriends took me to La Scala for my birthday.  We sat outside and I had the lasagna and pasta with the basil sauce- LOVE it!  It was a perfect evening!

Pokemon Go has hit Lafayette-West Lafayette

Pokemon1The newest trend we all can’t stop hearing….POKEMON GO!

Lafayette-West Lafayette has joined the fun in full force! Pay extra careful attention when walking along the streets, you may run into someone with their face buried in their phone. We went out on a Pokemon adventure this week, as total newbies. We learned so much and had a blast!

A basic rundown of Pokemon Go- You hunt the characters and catch them using Pokeballs. You collect the balls by going to Poke Stops and picking them up. Once you have enough Pokemon, you can go to a gym and battle other people.

We spent the majority of our time on Purdue’s campus. There are Pokemon EVERYWHERE! It was neat to explore the different edges of campus. Our goal was to find a Pikachu while we were on campus but unfortunately that did not happen. Better luck next time.

Picture this, Cumberland Park in West Lafayette, you are heading out to shoot some hoops. Instead, you find the basketball courts full of people looking at their phones. A Pokemon Gym! Ah! Yes, finally a place we can battle one another.

Downtown Lafayette was also a great place for Poke Stops, gyms and to hunt the Pokemon. We loved to see the different art and attractions at the locations. The migration statue between Fourth and Fifth Streets was a great Poke Stop. Further down the Frank C Arganbright Geneology Center was a higher level gym.

Pokemon Go started as an April Fools Day joke put out by Google in 2014. A year and a half later, it has become quite the craze. Join in on the fun and share with us your adventures across our great community using #homeofpurdue.

Summer Fun at the Farm at Prophetstown

Farm during a spring storm!

Farm during a spring storm!

Summer fun has hit our area and a must see attraction is the Farm at Prophetstown in West Lafayette, Indiana. Home to chickens, pigs, cows, horses and more, this farm will bring smiles to your face and enjoyment for all.

The Farm at Prophetstown is a real working farm! The livestock enjoy a beautiful, healthy farm/free range setting and crops are grown to be used to feed them throughout the year. Barn chores are done each day at 8 am and 3 pm and everyone is invited – especially children – to help in feeding the livestock, collecting eggs, and working in the garden.

Farm HoneyThis summer a plethora of special events are taking place at the farm from ice cream socials to specialty 5 course farm dinners to prairie parties. Their farm dinners are amazing! In June they featured a meal including smoked baby back ribs, sweet corn chowder, tomato basil tower, garlic beef tenderloin and a puff pastry with raspberries. The baby back ribs just fell off the bone and melted in my mouth! (Please note they have a vegetarian option also.) For a complete list of events check out the Farm’s Facebook page.

The animals- as we shared, yes, this is a working farm.  Check out these adorable farm animal photos. Share with us your favorite pic!!
