Head to West Lafayette this Saturday, September 30 for the Starry Night annual street festival.  This special event draws thousands of people with its unique blend of excellent music, a variety of merchants, interactive creativity, and food. The festival is designed to bring people together around the thread of story and seeks to expose the public to the cause of literacy through the local initiative Read to Succeed. Starry Night is hosted by Campus House and Greyhouse Coffee and, thanks to their generous sponsors, is FREE. Please come be a part of this amazing night!IMG_7822

A festival that is “tradition” and “celebration” to those from the area and beyond is the Feast of the Hunters’ Moon, taking place on the banks of the Wabash River on September 30 and October 1.  The Feast is a re-creation of the annual fall gathering of the French and Native American which took place at Fort Ouiatenon, a fur-trading outpost in the mid 1700s. It is held annually in early autumn four miles southwest of West Lafayette. Thousands of participants re-enact this event creating a feast for your senses. Smell the wood smoke, hear the report of the rifles, savor authentic food and more. Come and celebrate it’s 50th anniversary!

History Abounds: Firearms at the Fort & Historic Canal Days Festival

Fort OuiatenonFlash of MusketAs part of this year’s ongoing series of programs commemorating and celebrating the 300th anniversary of the founding of Fort Ouiatenon, and the 50th annual Feast of the Hunters’ Moon, the Tippecanoe County Historical Association is inviting everyone to a free program on Saturday, July 1, at 2 pm at Fort Ouiatenon Park. The program, entitled “Firearms at the Fort” will be a discussion and live – fire demonstration of historic firearms of the 18th century frontier. The program will be led by Rick Conwell, manager of the Tippecanoe Battlefield Interpretive Center and History Store, with the support and cooperation of the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association. Visitors will have the opportunity to examine real and reproduction firearms, view items from the TCHA collection and learn about the technology and progression of historic firearms. Event is free and open to the public.

On Saturday, July 1 and Sunday, July 2, visit the Wabash & Erie Canal for their Historic Canal Days Festival. Visit the village and artisans, blacksmith, carpenter, broom maker, weavers, paper maker, one room school, and the cooper. Speak with Reed Case in his restored home, or take a ride on the canal boat “the Delphi”. See the flag display in the Interpretive Center, or go through the award winning museum. Take a short stroll or drive down to the depot. New this year they will have an oxen team, as well as a fur trapper. Go to Red Bridge Settlement. Aslo, the French family will be in the ” summer kitchen” with great food. Some fees do apply.

The “Boom” of the cannons, shake the ground. Herbed pork chops sizzle as they roast. Scents of delectable foods like rabbit and buffalo stew, slow cooked for hours over an open fire fill the air. Sweet, savory apple dumplings, are prepared before your eyes with the freshest ingredients. Drums keep a steady beat in the distance. Festival goers experience this and more  as they recapture 18th century life at the Feast of the Hunters’ Moon, along the banks of the Wabash River, in West Lafayette, Indiana.

The festival is a reenactment of the annual fall gathering during the mid 1700’s at Fort Ouiatenon,  a fur trading post between the French and Wea Tribe of Native Americans. Control of the Fort shifted between the French, Native Americans and British during its almost 100 years of use.

On October 1-2, 2016 the Feast of the Hunters’ Moon, invites visitors to experience military demonstrations, foods prepared over an open fire, traditional craftsmen, costumed participants, music and dance for their 49th annual festival!  Enjoy acres of many hands-on activities and engage in lively trading as you take in what life was like around every corner you turn. It’s spirited, brimming with family fun and rich with history and cultural experiences.

Don’t miss a night of musical triumph! On Saturday, October 4, the Purdue Symphony and Philharmonic Orchestras will present Postcards from Around the World at Loeb Playhouse at Purdue. The evening includes violin soloist Marcia Henry-Liebenow. Marcia is Concertmaster of the Peoria Symphony Orchestra and works with the Bradley University Symphony Orchestra and the Central Illinois Youth Symphony. She will perform Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 and Ralph Vaughn Williams’ The Lark Ascending. The orchestras will also be performing the Princess Leia Theme from Star Wars, Otto Nicolai’s Merry Wives of Windsor Overture, and Hector Villalobos’ Bachianas Brasilieras No. 4. Mason Bates, composer-in-residence with the Chicago Symphony, will enhance the concert with lighting visuals and electronic musical elements on Mothership.

If you do not already have your tickets there is still time! The Feast of the Hunters’ Moon is taking place on October 4 and 5 this year, and it will be another year of great food, battle reenactments, vendors and crafts, music and more.
