Sweet Renovations at Greyhouse Coffee

Greyhouse Coffee is a spot loved by many Purdue students and visitors. Being one of the only local coffee shops around Purdue campus, this restaurant attracts long crowds and hungry students. After being closed for a short couple of months for major renovations, Greyhouse re-opened its doors in March of 2018.

I was able to check out the inside of Greyhouse for myself and it is truly stunning. They added more setting options, a brand new ordering station with a central location and a welcoming design. They still offer their classic lattes, teas and crepes but make sure to check then out in the coming weeks for the addition of gourmet donuts. My go-to drink at Greyhouse is the Masala Chai latte with almond milk. The caffeinated drink is a good alternative to drinking coffee, with spices like clove and cardamom that isn’t too sweet!

Greyhouse Coffee is conveniently located at 100 Northwestern Avenue, right on the corner of a multitude of restaurants in the West Lafayette area. Although they are known for their amazing coffee and lattes, they also offer a variety of tea options and smoothies. For food, they offer crepes, cakes, macaroons and gelato. They are known around campus for their variety of sweet and savory crepes, offering both regular and vegetarian options like the rooster crepe which is a local favorite!

During the warmer months, Greyhouse has outdoor seating. The renovation introduced some new indoor setting space as well to accommodate the students and guests who wish to study or sit and enjoy a drink on a chilly day. They are conveniently open from 7 AM and close at 12 AM; during some holidays, hours may change.

Make sure to stop on over and check out the new renovation for yourself! Purdue University Student and Visit Lafayette-West Lafayette Intern, Natalie, shares this blog.  For more information about Greyhouse Coffee and other coffee shops in our area, visit HomeOfPurdue.com.

Relax with a cup of coffee at Sacred Grounds

drink3Visitor Services Specialist, Kristine, shares her trip to Sacred Grounds, a coffee shop serving fresh brewed espresso in a harmonic atmosphere.

Are you looking for a Lafayette based barista that has some beat? Sacred Grounds coffee shop and eatery is committed to providing the perfect harmony of flavorful espresso drinks and soulful sound to get you jazzed up for life! This venue features live musical performances nearly every weekend while you snack and sip. A special blend of creativity and passion went into the creation of this coffee shop. We hope you’ll enjoy taking a break at this lovely corner café as much as we did!

counterSacred Grounds sits a little less than a mile away from the great Wabash River. Lit candles and antique furniture give this café a cozy atmosphere. Huge glass windows are situated in the main seating area. A brick wall slices through the middle of the building offering support to the high ceilings. A reconstructed wooden counter and hand painted quotes add to the vintage feel of this shop. Seating is available on the stairway for a romantic two-some to enjoy some of Sacred Ground’s delicious fresh coffee. Hearty sandwiches and salads are optional menu choices for those who are feeling “a mite peckish.” Without a doubt this café has a rustic appeal that makes it a cherished addition to the community.

Star City Coffee and Ale House

Star City Turkey Panini

Happening Now! Ale and coffee; combined makes a powerful connection. Right now, the talk around town is about a new hip and fresh restaurant, Star City Coffee and Ale House, that just opened this past December serving fresh brewed coffee and local brews. Visitors pick up a cup of java, as well as fresh muffins, cupcakes, panini pressed sandwiches and more.

What is better than starting the day off with a cup of coffee? The answer could possibly be ending the day with a glass of espresso coffee beans ale. Star City Coffee and Ale serves an “Agent Oats Coffee Stout” from People’s Brewing Company that is infused with their own espresso coffee beans. I personally am not a big beer drinker, but add a little espresso, and it makes me happy! I get more excited about their “Pourover“, which is a coffee brewed in their regular French press. French pressed coffee is a savory in my life. It is so smooth, refreshing, and awakening.

Lunchtime is the perfect time to head to Star City Coffee and Ale to order one of their five panini pressed grilled sandwiches with fresh fruit, and pita or sun chips. The “Star City Turkey” is already one of my favorite sandwiches; it is filled with garden herb turkey, cream cheese, basil, tomato, smoked mozzarella and chives. The panini grill toasts the bread to the perfect crispness, and the cheeses all melt and blend together with the turkey and herbs to create a delicious sandwich. It is one of best panini’s I have ever eaten!

If you are in the mood for a sweet treat their cupcakes are amazing. The hardest choice is choosing which flavor between chocolate buttercream, strawberry with strawberry icing and white chocolate, Italian cream with cherry and dark chocolate or strawberry cream cheese. (Please note these were the flavors they had on the day of my visit.) A chocolate lover at heart, I could not pass up choosing the chocolate buttercream cupcake, which was moist, light and airy and had a decadent icing. I was happily surprised to find extra icing in the middle of the cupcake! The owner shared that a local lady from Battle Ground, Indiana, bakes these delicious treats and will soon be opening her own shop in Battle Ground.

Whether you are looking for delicious dining, interesting attractions and shops, enticing events or home away from home lodging—a getaway to Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana, is sure to satisfy. Surviving Purdue Winters!

Winter Bell Tower – Purdue University

Surviving Purdue Winters by Visit Lafayette-West Lafayette’s intern Lauren:

It’s now January and Purdue students on campus are all curled up in their apartments or dorms back from a long holiday break. I’m sure they are dreading that walk to class and are wishing it could be warm again.  Everyone knows winters can be dark and dreary. However, once it snows, Purdue’s campus turns into a magical place. Watch out lunch ladies, you will be missing some of your lunch trays as students gather at Slayter Hill for sledding. If you aren’t a student and haven’t been over to campus after a snowfall, put this on your West Lafayette bucket list. It’s truly a hilarious sight to see as students put their creative talents to work. Some obviously go the old fashioned way with a lunch tray, but others in the past have made wooden sleds, used mattresses, and even went down on an old reclining chair attached to a wood base. Anything and everything has been seen on this campus hill. It’s crazy what measures students take to have a fun time but, it is a great way to get away from studying.

While on campus, warm up in one of the many coffee shops.  Students gather at Starbucks, Lavazza, Greyhouse, Undergrounds, Oasis, Vienna (who has some of the best Chai in town) and Café Royal not just to warm up, but to also fulfill that coffee need almost every student has. I’m looking forward to our first big snowfall and a deliciously warm cup of favored coffee.

Enjoy a warm bagel or mouth-watering muffin to top off your oven roasted sandwich or crisp salad. Not sure if you want to commit to a whole meal? Order up a batch of nachos and study the architecture of the courthouse or just chat it up with some locals.

Tis the season for going out into the cold in search of goodies and gifts for your loved ones and what better way to admire the shops and architecture in downtown Lafayette than with a nice hot cup of coffee or tea to warm you up? Even the most experienced holiday shoppers need a moment to revitalize and refresh themselves which is why Java Roaster offers lots of comfortable sofas and plush seating on both the ground level and upstairs. Feeling particularly artistic while you sip and snack? Grab one of the notebooks lying around and leave a doodle, poem, or your favorite quote in this “community journal” for the next person to enjoy.

Fall Time on Campus! Greyhouse Coffee

What a busy time on campus!  Fall is absolutely beautiful and the life around West Lafayette booms!  This week my local destination is Purdue University and the wonderful escapes I’ve had!  I’m in a very exciting graduate program called Atlantis in the College of Technology which promotes relations from multiple counties and sends the students to the United States, Spain and Ireland for two years to receive two masters’ degrees in sustainable technology.  The international students make the most of the year they have at Purdue and explore as much as they can.  I can’t wait to share campus with new students both international and from other states!

In the fall, I make Greyhouse Coffee Shop a regular part of my week.  I used to work at Greyhouse, and even though I left the job due to research needs two years ago, I feel like part of the Greyhouse family!  There is a perfect-sized menu with so many favorite dishes and drinks!  Greyhouse offers crepes, espresso drinks, coffee, gelato, pastries and retail.  I love going to Greyhouse on a late-night walk through campus and getting a little cup of gelato, or studying there during the day and ordering a London Fog (sweetened Earl Grey tea with milk).  If I’m in the mood for an entire meal, I go for my favorite crepe which is available all day!  I love a breakfast crepe with spinach, mozzarella cheese and specialty sausage.

Greyhouse makes a point to order their ingredients from local suppliers.  Their coffee comes from all over the world, but with much more care and research than most people know!  They make sure that the prices are fair trade or even better than fair trade.  When I worked at Greyhouse, the coffee was from small farms in Rwanda.  Greyhouse started working with these small places abroad to see first-hand where the beans came from, the process to produce them, and how they can form a symbiotic relationship.

I could rave about my favorite coffee shop on campus for pages and pages, but I know I should be short and to the point!  For great quality, loving customer service and an atmosphere unmatched on campus, come study or relax at Greyhouse!

(Thank you, Julia B. for sharing your Purdue University Student experience!)

K. Dees Coffee & Roasting Co.

2 Great Cities, 1 Great University “Midwest Hospitality”.  To experience “Midwest Hospitality” at its finest visit K. Dees Coffee, downtown Lafayette, Indiana, where visitors can sit back, relax, and enjoy a fresh brewed cup of coffee.

We lead very busy lives in today’s society.  Is there one thing you do every weekend that brings you peace of mind and helps you get ready for the busy week ahead?  Everything is relevant to your own personality, but I suggest having a relaxing and fun activity set every weekend that you can look forward to with your family and friends.  My husband and I spend every Saturday at a local coffee shop.  There is a peaceful feeling at coffee shops in the mornings, people are always so relaxed and happy.  We always see couples doing cross word puzzles and I always think to myself, “Marc and I should start doing them.”  But instead, every Saturday we drink our coffee, eat a scone or bagel, and talk.  It is great!

One coffee shop we visit is K. Dees Coffee & Roasting Co., which offers its guests delicious killer bean coffee, speciality created lattes, shots of espresso, and spicy hot chocolate.  Their breakfast items include blueberry muffins, bagels, chocolate bars and more.  But the one specialty at K. Dees Coffee that makes it a place where guests want to visit often; is the welcoming atmosphere.  The ambience is comfortable and the owner and his staff are friendly and congenial.  If guests have any questions about the coffee, the staff is happy to help with a smile and a recommendation.  This place puts people in a great mood and I recommend to visitors and locals, to make this one of your weekend “tranquil escapes“.

Living in Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana, one thing we value is customer service and appreciating the times we receive great customer care.  Midwest Hospitality is Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana.  We are proud of our local businesses, including K. Dees Coffee, that provide gracious and friendly service. For more information about this business and other fun activities in the area, visit our website at www.HomeOfPurdue.com.

John Purdue Room Bistro

John Purdue Room (Photo taken 1 week before January 17 Opening at new Marriott Hall location)

2 Great Cities, 1 Great University, Be a Tourist in Your Own Backyard!  Vacation, Relaxation, Fun; one image that comes into our heads is sand, sun and water.  Locals travel south to find their peace and quiet, while adventure, history, the arts and entertainment, and more, can be found in our own backyard.   Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana, is home to Purdue University which features a student managed, casual fine dining restaurant, John Purdue Room Bistro.

Looking for delicious, homemade food, exemplary service and an authentic, college experience?  You can get this and more at John Purdue Room Bistro.  This restaurant is where Purdue students are expected to manage, market, develop daily specials, produce, execute, and evaluate a casual fine dining experience.  For locals, visitors and students attending Purdue University, it is an opportunity to eat locally produced cuisine, dine in a brand new, state-of-the-art restaurant where diners can watch students prep and prepare the elegant entrees and enjoy dining in the center of a nationally known college, Purdue University.

One initiative I personally enjoy about John Purdue Room Bistro is its involvement in sustainable agriculture.  This past year the College of Agriculture and the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management collaborated to develop a student-run farming initiative.  Its menu uses these local agricultural products produced on a five acre farm managed by Purdue students.  It gives diners a true Midwest local foods experience.  And nothing beats Midwest cuisine!!

John Purdue Room Bistro is located at the brand new state-of-the-art facility, Marriott Hall, at Purdue University.  Its official opening date in this new location is tomorrow, Tuesday, January 17, 2012.  Marriott Hall not only houses this wonderful dining room, but also a quick service dining restaurant and world renowned coffee shop, Lavazza Expression Coffee Shop.  Lavazza Expression offers made to order, decadent coffee and fresh, rich gelato!
