Taste of Purdue

Purdue’s campus is not only home to many famous scholars and outstanding athletes, but also home to some of the best food in the state. Now that classes are out for the summer, I felt it was perfect timing for a taste of Purdue day! I decided to take a whole day to enjoy some of Purdue’s most famous eats.

Triple XXX Breakfasts Rock!

Triple XXX Breakfasts Rock!

My first stop was at Triple XXX Family Restaurant on State Street. Triple XXX is not only a Purdue tradition, but a tradition for many throughout the country. Food Network’s Guy Fieri brought his show “Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives” and had a taste of Triple XXX himself. As if that fun fact isn’t impressive enough, MSNBC crowned The Triple XXX Best Diner in the state of Indiana and USA Today added their burger to the 50 Best Burgers List. The burgers aren’t the only thing Triple XXX is known for, Thrillist crowned the Triple XXX root beer as the most iconic soft drink in the state of Indiana. Of course I can’t forget to mention the always incredible Triple XXX breakfast. I decided to try the Drew Bree’s First Choice which included two eggs, choice of chicken fried steak or their signature 100% ground sirloin, fried potatoes or hash browns, 2 buttermilk biscuits & sausage gravy. This was the perfect way to start off my taste of Purdue day. I didn’t leave hungry, that’s for sure. (Please note State Street in front of Triple XXX is under construction, so please check http://statestreetwl.com for traffic and construction updates.)

Greyhouse Coffee2015My next stop was right up the road at Greyhouse Coffee. Even after enjoying a hearty breakfast at Triple XXX, I couldn’t fight off my cravings for a hand crafted cinnamon latte. I ordered my latte and found myself a comfy chair to read a book and enjoy my drink. Greyhouse coffee is unbeatable and easily one of the most popular study spots on campus. The environment is unlike any other coffee shop on campus, which always draws me in when I need a nice quiet place to study. The service is great and Greyhouse is always full of friendly faces. I left Greyhouse satisfied and happy.

Bruno's Pizza

Bruno’s Pizza

By dinner time, I was starving and ready for something filling and tasty, so I found my way to Bruno’s! I started out with an order of Bruno Dough with a cup of cheese. Bruno dough is deep fried pizza dough brushed with garlic butter and sprinkled with garlic butter. YUM! Although the Bruno Dough was delicious and filling, I still ordered myself a small pepperoni pizza. Bruno’s pizza is unlike any other pizza in the area. It has its own unique look and flavor that everyone is sure to enjoy.

I am an ice cream lover and my taste of Purdue day wouldn’t be complete without it. I made my way across the road to the Silver Dipper. The Silver Dipper is a classic ice cream shop that has been around since 2001. There’s a flavor for everyone, as this shop offers around 40 flavors of ice cream! On this particular visit, I decided to have a waffle cone full of munchie madness ice cream. In case you’re wondering exactly what the munchie madness entails, it is a sweet cake batter ice cream swirled with a salted caramel ripple and brimming with Oreos, M&M pieces and peanut butter cups. All of life’s sweetest treats in one cone, my dream come true!

Well, did I make you hungry? All of these spots offer a large variety of food options at reasonable prices. Purdue is a great campus for foodies of any age. Whether you’re planning a summer visit to campus, meeting friends for lunch, or just on a foodie adventure, you are sure to love all of these fantastic tastes of Purdue!

Thank Goodness for Great Pizza!

IMG_1326Do you ever have a meal where after you think, “Thank goodness for great food!”? Every time we make a visit to Bruno’s Pizza and Big O’s Sports Room in West Lafayette, Indiana, we have this feeling of jubilation! Since 1955, Bruno’s has been serving hand-tossed pizza, famous Bruno dough, fresh garden salads, and house specialties (veal, bratwurst and manicotti just to name a few).

IMG_1332The pizza! Bruno’s pizza is different than any style of pizza I have ever had. It is a medium thickness crust that would be considered more New York Style. Bruno, Orlando (brothers who own the business along with their sister Tina) and their team of master pizza creators, toss the crust into the air, then pat it out onto pizza wood boards. They add a homemade, rich, red pizza sauce, a hearty brick style cheese and all the toppings. (My daughter loves to watch them make the pizzas from their huge glass window as you enter the restaurant.) The pizzas get placed in their massive, hot ovens, and bake together to pizza deliciousness.

You may ask, what makes Bruno’s pizza so special? In my opinion its four things: the crust, the sauce, the cheese and the love that is thrown into it. There is no other pizza around that taste like it and I have traveled throughout the United States and abroad, including Italy.  The love comes from a family that has worked together for over 60 years. Bruno Itin Sr. immigrated to Indiana from his home in Switzerland. Bruno Sr. passed away in 2006, but his two sons and daughter run the restaurant along with 6 granddaughters who all work at the restaurant. It is truly a family business!

Pizza, Pizza, Pizza! Bruno’s is the place for this and more!

Famous Bruno Dough!

Famous Bruno Dough!

Happening Now! Right now, the talk around town is about food and the fabulous restaurants that offer homemade cuisine at its finest! One of these local restaurants that have been in business since 1955 is Bruno’s Pizza and Big O’s Sports Room. Hand-tossed pizza, famous Bruno dough, fresh garden salads, and house specialties (veal, bratwurst and manicotti just to name a few), there is something for everyone at Bruno’s.

If I had the time I could spend hours writing about Bruno’s.  My family has been going to Bruno’s since before I was born; it was one of my parents’ first dates over 35 years ago! This past year we celebrated my mother’s 60th birthday here.  It was a surprise party and we invited 60 of her closest friends and family. Bruno’s was perfect because they have 3 separate dining rooms and we were able to use the whole front room called the Swiss Room. The room fits the name as it is decorated as though it was right out of a Swiss Chalet in Switzerland and the restaurant’s roots stem from this beautiful country. Bruno Itin Sr. immigrated to Indiana from his home in Switzerland.  Bruno Sr. passed away in 2006, but his two sons and daughter run the restaurant along with 6 granddaughters who all work at the restaurant. It is truly a family business!

My mom was completely shocked and excited when she arrived to a room full of over joyous friends and family. All the guests were not only happy to celebrate this day, but have the opportunity to eat Bruno’s delicious pizza.  To those throwing a party this is the place to go!  You get a private room, great food, and wonderful customer service for a very reasonable price.  For a set cost per person, it was unlimited pizza (this included specialty pizzas), Bruno dough and salad!  (Please note for big parties, anything on their menu can be ordered.)  One of my aunts cannot eat cheese.  What is pizza without cheese?  But Bruno’s made her a special pizza with a bunch of vegetables and meats and she was ecstatic.  She said it was wonderful and the funny part is other friends ate it too and they had to make another!

Our Romantic Getaway to Lafayette-West Lafayette

Our visit to Homewood Suites!

Our stay at Homewood Suites!

Winners of our Romantic Getaway 2013 Contest shared their wonderful experience to our area.  Enjoy Kim’s blog about their stay!

Steve and I used our Romantic Getaway to Lafayette/West Lafayette package last week and had a wonderful time!  We arrived in the Purdue area late morning on Monday.  We started with delicious lunches including a cheeseburger meal and a pork tenderloin meal at Triple XXX complete with a root beer and a root beer float.  We’re both Purdue grads so we spent most of the day walking around campus, including visiting the various places we lived individually on campus when we were dating and our Married Student Housing apartment building.

Kim Martin Romantic Getaway Winner 2Late afternoon we drove over to Gretel’s Fine Gifts where we used our gift certificate to get a beautiful purple scarf for me and some caramels for us to share.  Afterwards we had an early dinner at Bruno’s Big O’s Sports Room, compliments of their contribution to the package.  Steve had a pepperoni, sausage, and mushroom pizza and I had fettuccine alfredo with shrimp.  We had early tickets to go see a movie across the street so we ordered dessert to go.  They nicely packaged up our cheesecakes, complete with forks and napkins, for us to enjoy later at our hotel.

After our movie, we headed to Homewood Suites for our complimentary stay.  The living/kitchen area and separate bedroom with bathroom were beautiful!  The staff paid great attention to detail; the suite included many special touches and was exceptionally clean.  After sleeping in Tuesday morning, we enjoyed a full breakfast buffet in the lovely dining and lounge area, complete with a fireplace.

Grateful Heart Shopping!

Tuesday we spent the day walking on some of the paths along the Wabash River, across the Pedestrian Bridge, and through downtown Lafayette.  We had fun using our gift certificates picking out goodies at various stores along Main Street.  At Artists’ Own, we picked out a picture for our kitchen that we’ll frame.  We found a lifelike ceramic leaf and coordinating ceramic side dishes at Grateful Heart Pottery that we’re going to use for a candle display.  Since we’re both chocolate lovers, our favorite stop was Kathy’s Homemade Kandies and Chocolate Lounge.  Steve went for a tried and true love, getting 3/4 pound of chocolate turtles.  I wanted to try all their goodies so I got a box of assorted truffles and other homemade chocolates.  Everything we’ve tried has been delicious!

There were so many goodies in our prize package that we couldn’t use them all in one stay.  We’re planning to go to Prophetstown State Park next spring.  We’re hoping to bring our kids along for a Purdue visit soon and will use our Dog n Suds Drive-In gift certificates, the rest of our Triple XXX gift card, and our Arni’s gift certificate on that trip. We’re also going to e-mail a picture to L.E. Originals to be made into a unique Photo Bead Necklace.

KimMartinRomanticGetawayWinner5At one point, as we were walking along, I asked Steve where he wanted to go next and he said, “I don’t care.  I just like spending time with you.”  I think I truly have a romantic husband!   I thank everyone that contributed so much for giving us a chance to spend time alone with each other getting to do so many things that don’t fit into our regular schedule!
