Eggcellent Meal: Visit Another Broken Egg Cafe

IMG_7816One of my husband and I’s favorite weekly traditions is Sunday morning breakfast! Whenever there is a new restaurant in town that serves breakfast, we always make an effort to give it a try. Another Broken Egg Café had been on our list for a while and I am really glad we finally ventured out to try it!

They serve breakfast all day! This cafe is open Monday-Saturday 7am to 8pm and Sunday 7am to 2pm. The parking lot to Wang Hall was a little difficult to find. It is on the back side of the building. It is easiest to turn from Northwestern Avenue on to W Stadium Avenue and then turn on to Hayes Street where you will find the parking lot.

The friendly staff

The menu at Another Broken Egg Café is mouth watering! My husband is from the South and one of the first things he pointed out to me on the menu was the City Grits. He is used to cheese grits, so when we saw that the City Grits had roasted garlic, onions, smoked Gouda, bacon, tomatoes, and green onions, we knew that Another Broken Egg likes to add their own twist to breakfast favorites.

Cinnamon Roll French Toast

Cinnamon Roll French Toast

After much contemplation, he decided to save the City Grits for another visit and ordered the Cinnamon Roll French Toast. By the time he was finished with his meal he was in a sugar comma. To make the Cinnamon Roll French Toast, they cut a cinnamon roll into 3 slices, dip in in french toast batter, put it on the griddle, and then add cream cheese icing, Bananas Foster sauce and whipped cream. He got the mixed berries on the side. It is a must try if you are a cinnamon roll fan.

Skinny Omlette with Fruit and English muffin

Skinny Omlette with Fruit and English muffin

I contemplated the Potato Sensations where you choose 3 different toppings such as sausage, bacon, asparagus, mushrooms, etc. to go on top of wedge cut red potatoes and cheese. It was challenging to say no to that. I decided to find the healthier side of the menu. I ended up ordering the Skinny Omelette and I am so glad that I did! Yum! It was herbed egg whites with blanched asparagus, roasted red peppers, green onions, goat cheese, and roasted garlic cloves served with an English muffin and fresh fruit. It was the perfect amount of food and a fabulous lighter option. All of the flavors meshed very well together.  Why didn’t I ever think of putting goat cheese in an omelet?! The next time we do Sunday morning breakfast at Another Broken Egg, I need to keep this on my short list of great selections for when we return.

The bar!

The bar!

If you like a drink with your meal, they have many options for you! They have Mimosas, Absolut Mary and House Infused Mary. You can even liquor up your coffee with some Baileys, Kahlua, and Amaretto for a Café Rouge! The coffee IS something to write home about. I am now a big fan of their mugs! If you are up for a more traditional drink, they have many different juice options, cold and hot tea, hot chocolate, and of course soft drinks.

If you haven’t been to Another Broken Egg Café, give it a try! It is Eggcellent! 😉

Serendipity, an Eclectic Eatery

Serendipity omelet 1Happening Now!   French toast that will rock your world, scones that are made right from scratch daily, and omelets cooked pretty much any way you desire; this and more can be found at Serendipity, an eclectic eatery. Right now everyone is talking about Serendipity, which opened this year and serves fresh, homemade breakfasts and lunches in Downtown Lafayette.  If you haven’t had a chance to try it or are traveling to our area, make sure you add it to your “dining must-do list!”

The Visit Lafayette-West Lafayette team is a staff of “foodies”.  We love to try new restaurants and when Serendipity opened last year, we were one of its first customers and have been heading back with our families ever since.  Upon entering Serendipity we are graciously greeted by the hostess.  The ambiance is serene with the big windows overlooking Main Street to check out pedestrians as they walk by.  A beautiful bar aligns the east wall and steps lead to an additional upstairs eating area that is quiet and fun to people watch!

We all ordered different breakfast items on our first visit.  (Please note: breakfast is served all day!)  A few of us ordered different omelets; the “vegetarian“, the “mushroom florentine”, and the “build your own”.  They were a huge hit with our staff.  They were hot, fresh and cooked perfectly.  They come with a side of fresh seasoned red potatoes that were the perfect compliment to the omelets.  One staff member ordered the “fruitylicious waffle, which believe it or not, is made with fruity pebbles!  We all commented what a fun place to bring children with their menu items taking fun, sugary cereal and made into delicious, different breakfast items!  One item we missed ordering on the menu was their eggs benedict, but rumor around town is it rivals some of the best!  It is on my list of “items to order – next visit”!

Serendipity also serves lunch which includes everything from burgers made with 100% beef, sandwiches (I recommend their chicken salad made with their own house blend of chicken, cranberries, mayo and spices) and seafood options that includes crab cakes, fish sandwiches and catfish fingers.  It is a diverse menu, which can make it hard to decide what exactly to order.  We recommend taking a few friends or family members, and sharing!

Serendipty DessertI took my husband for a visit to Serendipity one evening when they were open special for a Mosey Down Main Street event.  We already had dinner, but we thought it would be fun to get drinks and dessert.  We shared their gluten-free chocolate lovers torte and Crème brûlée, which were decadent yet refreshing.  We both were scrambling for the last bite of the chocolate torte; it was so yummy!

The Downtowner Restaurant – Serving Breakfast All Day!

Happening Now! Right now, the talk around town is about The Downtowner Restaurant, a Lafayette tradition since 1951.  For over 50 years, this restaurant has been serving the community with homemade breakfasts and lunches that are fresh, hot and inexpensive.  It is a hometown place serving country style cooking and welcomes all visitors to enjoy a moment to relax and start their day on a positive note.

Located in Market Square Plaza, this restaurant is a hidden gem located off a quiet one-way street.  Once you find it, you will be happy you stopped!  The Downtowner Restaurant is known for its fabulous breakfasts and there are many items on the menu you must try if you stop.  Looking for light and fluffy pancakes?  You cannot go wrong by ordering these on their menu!  Definitely make sure you add a side of their crispy bacon, fried hash browns, and eggs made any way you want.  Combine all four of these things and you are ordering one of their “syrup section” combinations.

Breakfast is served all day, and I would be remiss if I didn’t mention their “scramblers” which is 3 eggs scrambled with everything including fresh vegetables, meats and cheeses.  A few of these breakfast delights include the “garden scrambler”, the “spicy scrambler” and the “southern scrambler” (a house favorite).  The “southern scrambler” is 3 eggs scrambled with ham, onions, bacon, hash browns and covered with cheddar cheese.  Served with a side of toast, this meal is very fulfilling and personally can be my breakfast and lunch for the day!

Not feeling like eating breakfast?  Starting at 10:30 am a full lunch menu offering all types of sandwiches from a burgers to a reuben to an American classic, the sloppy joe.  Indiana is known for their tenderloins and The Downtowner Restaurant takes it one step farther and soaks it in their buffalo sauce and adds melted mozzarella. Walla, you have their buffalo tenderloin that is spicy and delicious!

Baja Peninsula

Lemon Ricotta Cheese Pancakes

2 Great Cities, 1 Great University, “One Great Dining Destination”.  Lafayette-West Lafayette is home to many diverse dining locations and one that will leave you satisfied is Baja Peninsula, with its California style American cuisine.

Do you have a restaurant you have driven by many times and every time you drive by it you say, “I want to try out that place.”  This is what I said about Baja Peninsula the last few years.  My mother had shared how wonderful the food was, and I was enthusiastic about going.  Finally this past summer I made my first visit.  I wasn’t sure what to encounter as the exterior of the building is nothing to write home about, but when you walk in the atmosphere is bright, welcoming, and very simply decorated.  We were instantly greeted by the hostess and taken to our seats.  The hostess shared the breakfast and lunch specials for the day, but the group of ladies I was with decided to order from the menu.

My friend Ashley ordered their acclaimed lemon ricotta cheese pancakes which she said were light and airy with a nice addition of lemon to not be too overpowering.  Another friend, Kristine, ordered their pesto panini, which featured fresh mozzarella and tomatoes.  It is a simple dish but she shared it was done perfectly.  I ordered the herb roasted chicken breast with roasted garlic, mashed potatoes with asparagus and thyme demi glaze.  I am a meat and potatoes gal, and this was great!  We really enjoyed our food and our visit.

Christos New City Grill

Happening Now!  Right now, the talk around town is about a locally owned restaurant, Christos New City Grill, serving hot, delicious breakfast, lunch and dinner in a family friendly atmosphere.

My Mother In-Law and Father IN-Law are “regulars” at Christos New City Grill.  What do I mean by “regular”?  They walk in the door and the hosts’ know and greet them.  They are seated and await a menu full of diverse food selections ranging from fresh omelets to turkey bacon club sandwiches, to center cut pork chop dinners.

With such a large menu, I would like to focus on their breakfasts to share with my readers.  First, they serve their breakfast all day long (which maybe it is just me, but isn’t it fun to eat breakfast for dinner?).  Growing up, on Sunday nights, my mother would make breakfast for dinner and as a child it was something special.  At Christos, something special can be eaten all week long!  My family has tried a little bit of everything on their breakfast menu, and over all, diners will leave happy and satisfied with their selection.

My favorite breakfast dish is simple yet oh so good!  It is their pancakes; three fluffy cakes served with whipped butter and maple syrup along with a side of crispy bacon.  It may be the child in me remembering my Mother’s homemade pancakes, but Christos serves them right off the grill and they are dense, light and airy.  My husband, Marc, recently tried their pepper jack and spicy sausage omelet, which took him out of his comfort zone of ordering his normal scrambled eggs, bacon, and toast meal.  He tried to be adventurous with his taste buds and came away happy as can be.  Marc shared the green peppers and onions, spicy sausage, pepper jack cheese and eggs all mixed together and created into this master piece of an omelet was hot yet not too fiery.  He said he will definitely be ordering it again in the near future.

Christos New City Grill has been voted as the “Best Breakfast” place in Lafayette and also “Voted Best Meal Under $10” by the Lafayette Journal and Courier in years past. They serve excellent food along with great service in a fun, hip and trendy environment.

Check out these decadent desserts!

Also, I would be remiss not to mention their pies and cakes. Every day they have a case of homemade desserts to choose from; pecan pie to chocolate cake to carrot cake and much, much more!

The Eye Opener Cafe

Homemade biscuits and gravy!!

2 Great Cities, 1 Great University “Midwest Hospitality”.  To experience “Midwest Hospitality” at its finest visit a small town diner in Battle Ground, Indiana, called the Eye Opener Cafe, who is serving up some of the best biscuits and gravy around!

Homemade biscuits and sausage gravy, fried hash browns, scrambled eggs and bacon; this is my husband’s order when we visit Eye Opener Cafe.  It sounds like a lot of food and it is!  The biscuits are light and fluffy with a pan-fried sausage gravy that melts in your mouth.  The potatoes are perfectly crunchy while the eggs are fresh and well seasoned.  My husband is a hog farmer, and the true test is the bacon.  We like our bacon medium cooked with a nice seasoning where you can really taste the textures of the meat.  Their bacon meets all our requirements and more.  The Eye Opener Cafe’s food is superb, and in my opinion, I would rate them as cooking one of the best biscuits and gravy I have ever had.  I also order a side of French fries for myself and dip them in the gravy.

The Eye Opener Cafe is one of the wonderful things about living in this area because the owners are so friendly and the locals who eat here are very welcoming.  The first time we ate here, a few locals invited us to sit and eat with them.  They gave us the 411 on what to eat (which pretty much was their whole menu because we have tried a number of different items and they are all wonderful).  It is was so nice and really showcased what “Midwest Hospitality” is all about.

This cafe serves breakfast and lunch daily and dinners on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evening.  They make fresh pies daily that sell out quickly so I recommend asking the server what pies they have on special as soon as you sit down.  Wolf Park, the Tippecanoe Battlefield and Prophetstown State Park are all area locations that are close by, so I recommend taking a day to visit Battle Ground and all it has to offer!

Living in Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana, one thing we value is customer service and appreciating the times we receive great customer care.  Midwest Hospitality is Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana.  We are proud of our local businesses, including The Eye Opener Cafe, who provides gracious and friendly service. Hampton Inn – Lafayette

Front Desk at the Hampton Inn

2 Great Cities, 1 Great University, so many great places to stay the night! Lafayette-West Lafayette is home to Hampton Inn – Lafayette; the perfect hotel to get a good night’s rest while on the road or visiting our two fun cities.

My family is a Hilton Honors member.  When we travel we try to always stay at a Hilton brand to get travel points and discounts on our overnight stays.  It is great, because if we accumulate so many points, we can stay for free.  One hotel we frequent a lot is the Hampton Inn, because we have found as we have traveled all over the United States, that every Hampton Inn is clean, the service is exceptional, and the breakfast is always filling and good.  Our own Hampton Inn in Lafayette is no exception.  They make the traveler feel welcome and offer a safe, comfortable place for them to stay.

I have never personally stayed at Hampton Inn – Lafayette, but my sister had her guests to her wedding stay at this hotel.  They were complimentary when speaking of the rooms, indoor pool, breakfast and service.  The location was perfect, as it was easy access to Interstate 65 and also ten minutes away from downtown Lafayette where the wedding reception was being held.

Hampton Inn – Lafayette offers 62 rooms including whirlpool suites, an indoor pool, complimentary continental breakfast, and children under 18 stay free.  It is less than fifteen minutes to Purdue University which is great for travelers visiting their children or attending a sporting event or conference.

Hampton Inn is not to be missed on your next visit to our area.  For more information about this hotel and more in Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana, visit our website at www.HomeOfPurdue.com

Homewood Suites by Hilton – Hospitality at its Finest

2 Great Cities, 1 Great University “Midwest Hospitality”.  To experience “Midwest Hospitality” at its finest visit Homewood Suites by Hilton in Lafayette, Indiana; where great rooms await and many amenities to explore!

Homewood kitchen (full of great food!)

Have you ever stayed at a Homewood Suites by Hilton?  If so, you can attest to the great hospitality served at these hotels.  Our Lafayette Homewood is no exception!  As soon as you enter the establishment you are greeted by a smiling face.  To guests spending the night Monday through Thursday, the staff share there is a complimentary evening reception that features a menu that is unique every evening.  I want to highlight this is not a crackers and cheese fare, but a full course meal!  Examples of main entrees featured are chicken and dumplings, pork carnitas, and sesame chicken.  Each night has its own theme.  A salad bar, along with beer and wine, compliment each dinner.

After dinner (or before if you want to be refreshed), guests can either relax in the outdoor pool or lounge on the sofa in their suites that each include a beautiful fireplace.  If guests are in the mood to enjoy the lively night-time entertainment downtown Lafayette or at Purdue University, a 24 hour hotel shuttle service awaits to take you to any destination in the Lafayette-West Lafayette area.

Biscuits and Gravy- can you say "delicious!"

Guests awake the following morning feeling refreshed and energized to start their days.  You can either make coffee in the fully equipped kitchen, or better yet head to the main lobby/dining area where a hot breakfast is served.  I had a meeting with the Homewood staff last week and they offered me a taste of their delicious breakfast. It was full of so many goodies that I left completely satisfied.  I started with a bowl of fresh fruit (berries, grapes and melon) that was refreshing and sweet.  Next I tried their hot oatmeal with just a touch of brown sugar, a homemade biscuit smothered in sausage gravy, scrambled eggs and perfectly cooked sausage.  I really wanted to try their homemade muffins but unfortunately I was too full.  The breakfast was scrumptious!  And what made my day even better, was the friendly service.  The staff was so nice and as I sat and watched I noticed they checked on all the diners throughout the meal and made sure everything was to their satisfaction.  I may have to make this a regular monthly breakfast meeting!

It's the little special touches that make people special and smile. (Umbrellas to borrow if it rains.)
