Festival Fun Weekend Update! Looking for a fun Indiana weekend getaway? Or do you live in this area and are looking for entertainment close by? Check out the endless possibilities for fun events happening this upcoming weekend in or near Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana.

Head to West Lafayette this Saturday, October 3 for the Starry Night annual street festival.  This special event draws thousands of people with its unique blend of excellent music, a variety of merchants, interactive creativity, and food. The festival is designed to bring people together around the thread of story and seeks to expose the public to the cause of literacy through the local initiative Read to Succeed. Starry Night is hosted by Campus House and Greyhouse Coffee and, thanks to their generous sponsors, is FREE. Please come be a part of this amazing night!

A festival that is “tradition” and “celebration” to those from the area and beyond is the Feast of the Hunters’ Moon, taking place on the banks of the Wabash River on October 3 and 4.  The Feast is a re-creation of the annual fall gathering of the French and Native American which took place at Fort Ouiatenon, a fur-trading outpost in the mid 1700s. It is held annually in early autumn four miles southwest of West Lafayette. Thousands of participants re-enact this event creating a feast for your senses. Smell the wood smoke, hear the report of the rifles, savor authentic food and more.

Weekend Update: The Cumbia All Stars & Betty’s Diner, The Musical

Cumbia All Star

Cumbia All Star

Weekend Update! Looking for a fun Indiana weekend getaway? Or do you live in this area and are looking for entertainment close by? Check out the endless possibilities for fun events happening this upcoming weekend in or near Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana.

Have you heard of the Cumbia? The Cumbia is a music genre popular throughout Latin America. The Cumbia causes dancers to rush to the dance floor nearly everywhere it is heard. With an infectious beat and beckoning vocals, the cumbia was born from a diverse collection of African, Spanish, and Central American Indian influences as it merged and morphed its way through the Caribbean and Central America in the late 1800s. As with any folkloric tradition, each nation infused its own identity into the cumbia sound. In 1960s and ’70s Peru, the “golden age” of cumbia distinctly evolved to embrace a wide swath of musical history and heritage—from colonial-era huaynodance to contemporary surf-rock with psychedelic flourishes. The Cumbia All Stars, a supergroup comprised of luminaries from Peru’s legendary cumbia bands, majestically resurrect the classics of their heyday and honor that legacy with innovative new compositions. And they are performing at Purdue in the Purdue Memorial Union ballrooms on Friday, September 25!  With a propulsive beat driven by sparkling guitars and bold percussion, these then-teenaged musicians planted the roots of their sound in Lima’s urban bustle and saw it spread to remote cities of the Amazonian Jungle. As the Cumbia All Stars, they’ve reunited to resurrect an important piece of Peru’s sonic soul, and their performance will have you moving all night on the Purdue Memorial Union Ballrooms’ big dance floor to their transfixing, transcendent grooves!

More musical entertainment takes place at Purdue this weekend! Betty’s Diner, The Musical with music & lyrics by Carrie Newcomer is being performed at the Carole and Gordon Mallett Theatre on Friday, September 25, Saturday, September 26 and Sunday, September 27. Betty’s Diner might be one of those diners along US 231 or any of those roads that pass through small towns in the Midwest. It’s a place that’s been there forever, a place that feels like home, a place where they remember that you like your coffee black and your eggs over easy. But the new highway is opening up and business is slowing down. Miranda puts a For Sale sign up in the window and a stranger by the name of Gabriel wanders in, and that’s where their story begins.

A Purdue University Tradition – Triple XXX Root Beer

DSC00692Located halfway up Chauncey Hill, lies a Purdue University tradition. Triple XXX is one of the most historic landmark restaurants in the Lafayette-West Lafayette area. Founded in 1929, Triple XXX is known for their delicious root beer! If you head to their website, you can find the complete history of their root beer which is quite the story!

Opening at 5:30am everyday, you can come to Triple XXX and get one of the best breakfasts in town. It is one of the hardest decisions to choose what I want to eat each time I go! When you walk in, all you will see is one long turning countertop with bar stools to sit in. When it isn’t too crowded, which is rarely, you are welcome to find your own place to sit down. Most other times, you will have to be put on a waiting list to eat and wait outside. Don’t let this scare you away; they get people in and out of there extremely quickly.

IMG_4639The atmosphere at Triple XXX is casual and upbeat. The servers are all super sweet. First, you have to order their famous root beer. It comes served in an ice-cold mug. Next, you have to make the difficult decision of what to order. Since there are so many delicious choices, you’ll realize that you will have to come back again. One of the most famous items is the Duane Purvis All-American Burger. This is a thick burger with peanut butter and lots of other delicious toppings. Definitely a classic.

One thing you should know before you walk in to dine at Triple XXX is that they only take cash! However, there is an ATM inside just in case you forget.

DSC00696Triple XXX is a favorite for locals, Purdue students, and even the Food Network! It was featured on the show Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives hosted by Guy Fieri. Take home a 6 pack of their root beer with you when you leave for only $7.50. I promise, once you experience what Triple XXX has to offer, you will come back again and bring someone new with you!

Purdue University Student and Visit Lafayette-West Lafayette Intern, Rachel, shared this blog. For more information about this restaurant and others in the area, visit our website at www.HomeOfPurdue.com.
