Meet you at Arni’s

Arnis 50th (39)

Celebrating 50 years!

The original Arni’s Restaurant opened at Market Square in 1965. Since then, Arni’s has made a positive impact locally as well as state wide with 18 locations throughout Indiana. Arni Cohen, the original owner and founder of Arni’s, was known to be a very kind and active member of the community up until his passing in 2002. His two sons Brad and Kurt, who now own and run the company, have carried on the family tradition of community involvement and friendly service through the business. I know this first hand from being a customer through childhood and now working at Arni’s myself.

Great customer service!

Great customer service!

I was very fortunate to be given an internship opportunity with Arni’s during my sophomore year at Purdue. Arni’s works closely with Purdue’s Hospitality and Tourism Program during career fairs and events such as the Purdue Black Tie Dinner. I couldn’t have asked for a better place to work and learn about the industry through a very wide range of responsibilities. Arni’s offers a full bar service, catering, and of course dine in. With the size and popularity of Arni’s, this opportunity offered me more than I could ever imagine through everything from marketing, restaurant operations, and catering skills. Although my semester long internship ended in May of 2017, I have continued working at Arni’s as a hostess.

20140621_195744My favorite part about working at Arni’s is the history within the restaurant itself, the employees, and the customers. There are multiple employees who have been working at the Market Square location for almost as long as Arni’s has been open. These long time employees are a huge part of what makes Arni’s so special, memorable, and nostalgic for many of our customers. There are many regulars who have been loyal customers since the doors first opened in 1965. We see our regular customers weekly and sometimes daily. This type of loyalty is so special and rare, I am so glad to be a part of it. The Arni’s environment is full of nostalgia, from the building, the pictures on the walls, to the servers and pizza makers who make it all happen.

arnis - 3 pizzasI can remember going to Arni’s as a child and I never grew tired of the classic Arni’s pizza. Now as an Arni’s employee, I still love to enjoy an Arni’s pizza or a hot ham and cheese whenever I can. Arni’s is a Lafayette tradition not only for my family, but many families in Lafayette and surrounding areas. When Lafayette natives move away and come back to visit, Arni’s is often their first place to stop upon their arrival. I have encountered many people while working at Arni’s who try to time their travel just right to order a pizza as soon as they get into town or make a stop at Arni’s before they leave the area. Arni’s is a taste of home for so many, including myself.

The type of service, history, and taste Arni’s offers cannot be taught, but happens with experience and a genuine sense of community. I know from being a customer and also an employee that Arni’s provides the type of dining experience every customer longs for. You will have a smile on your face from the moment you walk into the doors until the moment you leave after a great meal. Don’t just take my word for it, I’ll Meet you at Arni’s!

A Day in the Life of a Lafayette-West Lafayette Spring Break Family

Sacred Grounds Coffee

Sacred Grounds Reclaimed Coffee Shop

Spring Break Season is here! Many people head south on their travels, but there are so many wonderful places to visit right in our own backyard. Last March we had family visit from Michigan and we spent a day visiting a host of great attractions and restaurants in the area. Let me share my day in a life as a Lafayette-West Lafayette Spring Family!

8am – Wake up early to catch the sunrise! Head to Sacred Ground Reclaimed Coffee Shop for a smoked sausage and cheese wrap, hash browns, and delicious light roast Ethiopian coffee. Rich, smooth hot chocolate is the perfect refreshment for the kids.

Farm Family

9am – With over 80 pieces of outdoor art pick a few that interests the group and traverse the area to find them.  We picked the Family Farm Sculpture, Farmers Market Mural, Boarrister, and Envisioning Tomorrow as they are all located downtown Lafayette (and we only had an hour!)

10am – Take the kids to Imagination Station, Lafayette’s only science center designed to provide the opportunity to explore space, science, technology, and engineering in our community.

11am – What is more exciting to a kid than imagining to be a firefighter?! Call ahead for an appointment to visit the Five Points Fire Station Museum, a 93-year-old building where you can see what it was like to be a firefighter in the 1930s as well as try on firefighter coats and helmets.

Arni's Train!

Arni’s Train!

12pm – Lunchtime has arrived! With over 250 restaurants, there is something for everyone! We chose Arni’s Pizza for its delicious food and charm.  Sit in the Toy Room where you are surrounded by dolls, trains, trucks and more. Our little daughter can always find Mickey Mouse and gets so excited to see the train run and eat thin crust pizza!

1pm – It may be spring break, but a little bit of learning keeps the mind fresh! Explore the site of The Battle of Tippecanoe. Visit the grounds, take in the the vivid museum displays and discover the history of a time when two Shawnee brothers, Tecumseh and The Prophet, had a dream of uniting many tribes into an organized defense against the white settlers. Walk the battleground where Native Americans and settlers clashed and a conflict of cultures was resolved. Do not miss the Wah-ba-shik-a Nature Center which features natural history exhibits and has a wildlife observation window and small taxidermy animal displays.

2:30pm – Enjoy a little recreation and competition at Monster Mini Golf, an indoor glow in the dark monster themed 18 hole course and arcade. The winner in our family gets to brag and be king or queen for the day, whereas the rest of the family has to suffer the nonsense. My husband won last year to my dismay!

4pm – Snacks!!  It may still be chilly, but what is more refreshing than a cold treat! Yogurt reTREAT, a locally owned and operated self-serve frozen yogurt shop welcomes guests to grab a cup, fill the cup with the flavor(s) of frozen yogurt and the portion you desire, add topping(s) from the topping bars, and weigh and pay for your delicious creation! My family loves their Very Berry Sorbet, which is refreshing and gluten-free!

5pm – Choose Your “Canvas” at All Fired Up! With a wide array of pieces to choose from and weekly specials that offer something unique for all ages, All Fired Up is the perfect destination for family fun.

We love Triple XXX burgers and onion rings!

6:30pm – Let the feasting begin! Our family loves a good burger joint and one place that is always on our lists when we have family visit is Triple XXX! Have you ever craved a burger so bad your taste buds are literally salivating? After trying a Triple XXX burger you will be feeling this way all the time! Add in fries, chili and root beer and you may never leave the restaurant!

8pm – Bowling fever! Visit Mike Aulby’s Arrowhead Bowl, where you can find great bowling and great family fun in a smoke free environment! Take part in billards, arcardes, cosmic-bowling, and a full service snack bar!

Arni’s offers Hoosier Hospitality at it’s finest!

Stromboli! (And this only a 1/2 sandwich!)

Stromboli! (And this only a 1/2 sandwich!)

2 Great Cities, 1 Great University, “Hoosier Hospitality”.  To experience “Hoosier Hospitality” at its finest visit Arni’s where the food is delicious and the service is exceptional.  Arni’s is a staple in the Lafayette area.  This restaurant which offers pizza, sandwiches, salads and more has been serving the community since 1965.

“Hoosier Hospitality.” What does this mean?  I (a true Midwesterner born and raised in Indiana) feel that “Hoosier Hospitality” is a friendliness and openness people from this area show to one another and to others from other parts of the states and world.  We wave.  We smile.  We say hi.  In essence, we are just friendly to everyone.  Every visit to Arni’s I feel this.  (And we visit Arni’s almost once a week for lunch or dinner!).  Arni Cohen, the founder of Arni’s (who sadly passed in 2002, but whose sons have taken over the business with the same philosophy), had a philosophy that if you take care of your employees, they will take care of you.  This mantra has resulted in Arni’s Restaurants having a turnover rate that is a fraction of the national average.  Every time we visit Arni’s we have the same waiters/waitresses that have worked there for years.  They are wonderful!  Their friendliness is genuine and they are knowledgeable about the menu, the history, and always go the extra mile to make sure we have a great experience.

As I’ve shared, we visit Arni’s almost once a week. We enjoy the great customer service, but we love the food!  We have tried pretty much everything on their menu and my family has their favorites.  We usually order one or more of the following: their pepperoni pizza (with extra tomato sauce), Arni’s junior salads (loaded with cheese, deli meats, and veggies), garlic bread, and submarine sandwiches (minus the onion)!  This past year we started ordering their loaded cheese fries, which are amazing!  They are not greasy and are loaded with different cheeses, bacon, and chives.  They are even good heated up later (which never happens with French fries!).  Their wings are some of the best we have ever had.  They are really meaty and are offered in two different sauces, buffalo or BBQ.  My husband and I always debate on the sauce, but they have been so accommodating and split them up 1/2 and 1/2 so we can both enjoy them.

One more item that I have to address is the ambiance.  Arni’s at Market Square offers something for everyone.  Their bar, “The Loading Dock”, (21 and older) is the perfect place for those who want a more quiet space to eat.  The decor is warehouse style, which sounds odd, but has neat old trucks on display, decorative lit signs, and license plates.  Another room that is perfect for a family is the “Toys in the Attic Room“, where tons of toys are on display including dollhouses, trains, airplanes, and more.  The front room at Arni’s has recently been renovated and is perfect for all visitors as it offers a serene, up-scale feel.

There are many additional Arni’s locations throughout Central/North Central Indiana.  The Market Square location is the original and one of the most unique with its ambiance!

Living in Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana, one thing we value is customer service and appreciating the times we receive great customer care.  Hoosier Hospitality is Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana.  We are proud of our local businesses, including Arni’s, who provide gracious and friendly service.
