“Boiler Up” on a Den Pop and “Hammer Down” on a Hammer Donut

IMG_0361Just when you thought being a Boilermaker couldn’t get any better, it does! We now have a place to get FRESH donuts on campus for a reasonable price! Hammer Donuts is a small, but mighty donut shop inside the famous Discount Den in Chauncey Hill.

As soon as you walk into The Den you will see a beautifully painted mural painted by Lafayette’s own Elaine Nygren. The mural displays colorful donuts and sprinkles with a Purdue hammer hitting the wall. It’s the perfect back drop for a donut shop. It gives Hammer Donuts an artsy and colorful feel.

Hammer Donuts has teamed up with local businesses such as the Neon Cactus. On Thursday nights you can bring in your cactus cup and fill it up with donut holes for only $4.99. The Hammer Donuts Instagram is sure to make you hungry for a fresh hammer donut.

Hammer donuts can also fulfill your catering needs. The bright pink donut boxes are a great addition to your early morning meeting or staff breakfast. Hammer donuts does it all.

Purdue’s campus has had fro-yo options, Chinese food, AJ’s Burgers, Brothers Bar, and everything in-between that a hungry college student needs, except donuts! Now our campus is officially complete and just in time with State street opening and students returning for the semester.

IMG_0363

These donuts aren’t just your average donuts. Owner, Tate Schienbein, a 2017 Purdue Grad, makes the donuts from scratch using his own family recipe. The donuts are freshly made right there inside the Den every morning! The donuts look and more importantly, taste amazing. In addition to the amazing donuts, Hammer Donuts serves coffee from Lafayette’s own Copper Moon. This business is already on its way to being a Purdue tradition.

IMG_0368

The menu includes classic donuts, specialty donuts, and donut holes! My personal favorite is the specialty Lucky Charm covered donut. Hammer Donuts is the perfect compliment for the legendary Discount Den. How exciting is it that we can now “Boiler up” on a den pop and “hammer down” on a hammer donut! As Tate says, “Boiler Raised, Hammer Made!”. Head to 135 S Chauncey Ave Suite 1J in West Lafayette to give these delicious donuts a try for yourself.

Bennett’s

Every spring is like a re-awakening of beauty! Flowers are blooming, the grass is turning green and people are getting outdoors to embrace the warmth after a cold winter.  This spring we are celebrating by visiting two lovely nurseries that have beautiful fresh flowers and expert botanists to help answer any questions you have. Whether you have a green thumb or not, a visit to these businesses, is like walking in a spring flower wonderland!

Shopping at Bennett’s

  • Bennett’s has operated as a family horticultural business in the Greater Lafayette Area for over 100 years. The company was founded between 1870 and 1880 by William Bennett and his son and is currently operated by the sixth Bennett’s generation. An active nursery on 17 acres at the corner of McCarty and Creasy Lanes in Lafayette, Bennett’s can provide you with quality and selection in its large retail nursery, unparalleled garden center or in its full-service greenhouse and floral areas. Have any landscaping questions? All Bennett’s employees have been fully trained and can assist with questions about growing, design, etc. (Bennett’s is open 7 days a week.)

It’s Farmers Market Time in Lafayette-West Lafayette

WL Markers Market2015Dave SchmidtFrom the months of May to October, the Lafayette-West Lafayette Farmers Markets make their return. From farm fresh products to handmade gifts the markets offer something unique. These markets run one day per week at the different locations. The locations include downtown Lafayette, Purdue University campus and Cumberland Park in West Lafayette.

IMG_4445The Lafayette Farmer Market has been around for over 165 years! That makes it the oldest farmers market in the state of Indiana. Every Saturday morning from 8:00 am until 12:30pm the market is buzzing. You can find it on 5th street between Main and Columbia streets in historic downtown. If you are looking for parking, spots are available on the streets as well as in the public parking garage with the entrance off 5th street. You will find a beautiful mural backdrop celebrating the long running tradition of the farmers market in downtown Lafayette. Typically there is some sort of live entertainment going on. This market showcases fresh flowers, baked goods, vegetables, fruits, plus honey, jams and jellies.

IMG_4441The Purdue Farmers Market it slightly different. This market is held on Memorial Mall on campus. This market occurs every Thursday from 11:00am until 2:00pm. At this market you can find a lot more ready to eat food. This is a popular lunch spot for students both in summer school and in the fall semester. I purchase my bread from the market each week on my walk back home from classes!

West Lafayette Farmers Market2014Finally, the third market is held in West Lafayette. This market is held on Wednesdays at Cumberland Park in West Lafayette from 3:30pm-7pm. This market features additional goods available for purchase including children’s clothing, handmade glass jewelry and soaps. Additionally, musicians will perform, wine tasting is available and restaurants provide take out meals. Seating is also provided for a relaxing evening in the sunset.

Just a friendly reminder that pets are not allowed at any of these markets due to health and safety concerns!

Shopping locally supports the local economy and business owners. Head to the markets this week to find some delicious and in seasons fruits and vegetables!

Purdue Graduate Gifts

IMG_0184Purdue Commencement is almost upon us! May 13-15, Purdue Grads will make their graduation walk with pride and a wonderful feeling of accomplishment for all of their hard work to successfully graduate from one of the top schools of our nation. A Purdue Graduate can proudly boast this wonderful success as a Purdue degree will lead to so many bright opportunities in his or her future.

Personally, from living in this area and also working with many Purdue students, I always enjoy giving a nice, personalized gift to those who accomplish this amazing achievement. There are so many wonderful local stores that have Purdue gifts that are perfect for making lasting memories.

DSC00824One unique shop is Interior Objects. They have an area that is all Purdue that includes glassware, serving dishes and really neat photo frames. When my brother in-law achieved his Masters from Purdue a few years ago, we bought him a photo frame that had a vintage look. On graduation day, we took his photo and added it to the frame.  He now lives in Washington D.C. and the frame is in on his fireplace mantel!

Looking for a one of a kind gift? Linda Elmore from Something Special creates hand blown glass necklaces. She can make them in pretty much any color, and add braille to them so they can say any message one wants. Last year, one of my dearest friends graduated from Purdue, and I asked Linda to create a gold and black necklace that said “Purdue Pride” on it. My girlfriend was thrilled and shares she wears it all the time!

Gretel’s Fine Gifts is another specialty shop that offers Purdue items. When my husband and I were first married, my in-laws bought us a bunch of Purdue designed dishes (see photo above) from Gretel’s and they have been perfect for hosting big parties. Or even small dinner nights when there is a basketball game on, I will grab the plates to use to cheer on our Boilers!

Vintage! Main Street Mercantile is home to vintage Purdue clothes including dance outfits, baseball uniforms, band outfits, sweatshirts, etc. They have a huge space dedicated to Purdue and is a great shop to find a gift that will make a lasting memory!

IMG_4567If you are looking for a smaller gift item that is sweet and delicious visit Kathy’s Kandies.  She has Purdue themed candy items. One I recommend is the Black and Gold popcorn. It is a small bag of fresh popped popcorn and is a perfect item to add to a graduation bag!

Find the perfect gift this year for your Purdue Graduate!  To visit these shops and other great shopping locations in Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana, visit our website at www.HomeOfPurdue.com.

The Season of Giving is Here: Shop Local!

Interior Objects

Interior Objects

The season of giving is here! The older I get, the more I come to find that I much rather give to others versus receive.  Shopping for others with their happiness in mind and then seeing their surprised reaction to their presents is so very rewarding. This year, don’t travel far for the perfect presents! There are many options right here in Tippecanoe County.

Two Tulips

Two Tulips

For the young cuties in your life, head to Two Tulips for fun gifts. They have recently increased their product line to feature more young children’s clothes and accessories than ever before. Furthermore, they feature the Midwest’s largest collection of piggy banks! Head in and order a custom-made bank to add a personal flair to your gifts. Two Tulips also supplies customers with unique children’s products such as: blankets, backpacks, hooded towels, wooden furniture, and growth charts. Ask about ways you can personalize these items!

Hot House Market

Hot House Market

For the teenagers and young adults in your life, there is a perfect store for gifts of all sorts: Hot House Market! This local gem offers various vintage items for all. Vintage is the latest fad in all aspects of life. This shop offers clothing for men and women, classic shoes, lovely furniture, handmade home décor, bath accessories, record players with vinyl, and so much more! It is always a surprise going in, even on a weekly basis, as the owners are constantly turning over their supply in the store with fun, new items. Their products may be vintage, but they are at excellently priced and have big name brands such as: Coach, Levi’s, Gap, and more.

When shopping for mothers, grandmothers, and the lovely women in your life, there are two stores that stand out to me: Something Special and Grateful Heart Gallery & Gifts. Both of these locally owned art galleries and shops feature some of the most unique items in the area. From handcrafted home décor and art pieces to homemade jewelry, there is always something that is sure to overjoy your loved ones for the holidays. With so many options to pick from, the exquisite local women that manage and create artwork for these stores will be delighted to help you find the perfect gift for your friends and family!

Last but not least, you must shop for the men in your life. Personally, I think men are the hardest to shop for; however, they probably think the same about women. No worries though! I have a store I plan to shop at for all the men’s gifts this season: Interior Objects. When I say that this store has it all, it is no exaggeration. I could very well spend many hours in this store looking at all of the fun and unique products the store has to offer. Christmas time is my favorite season to go to Interior Objects due to their over-the-top seasonal decorations; it is extremely beautiful and enhances the festive spirit. For men, you will be able to find some of the most unique collegiate décor, which is excellent for those passionate Boilermaker fans out there! There is also a large supply of excellent kitchen accessories, home décor, local art, and much more. Are there too many great options to choose from? That’s OK, an indecisive shopper like myself runs into this situation often.

Something Special Custom Necklaces

Something Special Custom Necklaces

Purchase a gift certificate to allow your recipients to return and decide on the perfect gift themself! While you’re here, I suggest looking at the various stationary and cards. From funny to sentimental, come discover the numerous ways to send out Christmas cheer.

Not only is the season full of giving, but it is also packed with quality time spent with friends and family. One of my absolute favorite aspects about this time of year is decorating my place with festive décor to set the mood just right for special gatherings. To prepare for all of the holiday parties coming up, head to Design Nook for the latest trends in exterior and interior design. Design Nook employees go above and beyond and are available for assistance in your next home design project. Speak with professionals to discuss how to design your home like never before!

Buying Local: Weathered Plow, D&R Market & Beutler Meats

I’m a huge farmers market fan, but sometimes I just need some fresh produce or meat on a day or time when the farmers market isn’t operating, or it is out of season. We’ve got you covered with three great local markets in the Lafayette-West Lafayette area!

The newest one is The Weathered Plow. Located on Schuyler Ave., just west of Sagamore Parkway, you will find a little shop with a big front porch. We really encourage you to stop! They always have seasonal flowers out on the porch, and inside, you are sure to find something delicious! More than anything, I love stopping here for their ham salad and potato salad! I think their ham salad is the best in town! It is made fresh every day, and you can buy it by the pound or buy it as a sandwich and side. It’s a great place to grab a quick dinner to take home. They also have a variety of pre-packaged dry goods, and of course produce, eggs, meat, and a few breads. Try the cinnamon rolls if they have them! Oh my! They are delicious! Many items in the store are local and a lot of it comes from the owner’s own farm. The Weathered Plow is a great addition to our community!

D&R BBQ

D&R BBQ

The second local market is D & R.  They are located at the corner of South Street and Creasy Lane just across the street from Lowe’s, in a little strip mall with Dollar General and Pizza King. If you are looking for great meats, especially pork products, this is the place to go! They have awesome bacon, sausages and pork chops. We also love their tilapia; they have one that is pre-seasoned that is a quick and easy meal! We just pop it in the oven and serve with some asparagus or some other vegetable, and we are done. It’s so delicious too! D&R also carries produce, eggs, cheese and some jams, jellies, BBQ sauces, etc. It’s a great place to just hop in, get what you need and get out quickly. If you have a chance, be sure to walk a couple doors down to the D&R II, the restaurant! Oh, my! If you love BBQ, you will love this place. Huge pork chops, fall off the bone ribs, pulled pork, smoked chicken, not to mention all the wonderful sides! The smells alone are worth popping in!

The third location is a long time favorite of the Lafayette area, Beutler Meats! They are pro’s! Beutler’s has been serving the Lafayette-West Lafayette area since 1953! It is located off of Wabash Avenue in Lafayette, not too far from St. Ann’s Catholic Church. Beutler Meats is known mainly as a butcher and processing facility; some may not know that the general public can purchase meat here as well. People from all over the region bring their meat here to be processed. I have a farmer friend in Anderson, Indiana that drives his meat here to be processed,so it’s not just a Lafayette area thing.  All the beef they sell is dry aged for 14 days, and they grade their beef following USDA guidelines and sell only choice grade or better beef. They also do custom butchering and smoke meats. They have a great retail store where they sell all of their meat, and let me tell you, you will not get it any fresher than this! The selection changes a bit, but they have a fantastic variety of beef and pork. For those of you who bake out there, they also carry lard. I know my Grandma was always wondering where to buy lard for her pies.  They also have had a limited number of frozen vegetables and fruit, local cheese and Triple XXX Root Beer.  Our favorite is always the pork burgers! They are great on the grill throughout the year. We love their steaks and bacon too! For a listing of their current meats, you can visit their website. You walk right into the cooler to get the fresh meats, while it’s not super cold, you might want to have an idea of what you would like before walking in there. They also carry their own blends of spices! A great pairing with the meat! Stop by some time and try some of their meat; you really can taste the difference!

The Weathered Plow, D&R and Beutler’s are all open year round, so in the middle of winter, when you are dying to go to the Farmers Market and can’t or on that weekday when a market isn’t available… check these places out and support the local businesses!
